Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay marks the triumphant return of these two hilarious, slacker anti-heroes. The movie stars John Cho as Harold and Kal Penn as Kumar, two stoners who can’t seem to get a break. Their last adventure found them traveling across country to find a White Castle hamburger in order to satisfy a weed-induced case of “the munchies.”

This time, the boys get themselves in trouble trying to sneak a bong onboard a flight to Amsterdam. Now, being suspected of terrorism, they are forced to run from the law and try to find a way to prove their innocence. What follows is an irreverent and epic journey of deep thoughts, deeper inhaling and a wild trip around the world that is as “un-PC” as it gets.

Harold and Kumar aren’t exactly known for heavy social commentary, so it’s a little strange to see them launching their second big screen adventure atop a movie with the words “Guantanamo Bay” in the title. There’s nothing funny about water boarding. In a way though, it does make sense. The first movie may have primarily been a madcap, pot smoking road trip but it did make it a point of addressing the way people of different ethnic backgrounds sometimes get abused by the Man. John Cho’s character for instance, is saddled with his co-worker’s excess work because he’s Asian. This however, seems to be taking all of that light-hearted racial stick poking to an entirely new level.

I don’t know if I want to see Harold and Kumar wandering around Getmo, but I do know I want to see more of coke-sniffing, whore-banging Neil Patrick Harris. Harris, not Penn or Cho, was the real bright spot in the original movie. He runs away with the entire thing in his few scenes, and since he’s back for the sequel, rest assured that even if everything else goes to hell he’ll provide plenty of laughter. Come on, you’ve seen the trailers. Neil Patrick Harris on a unicorn? That’s funny already.
