Welcome to Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, the strangest, most fantastic, most wonderful toy store in the world. It’s a tantalizing toy haven in which everything inside literally comes to life – including the store itself – and where marvels of every imaginable, possible kind, and beyond, never cease . . . that is, until now.
When Mr. Magorium, the store’s extraordinary 243 year-old proprietor (Dustin Hoffman), announces that he will at long last hand over the reigns of his wonder-expanding store to his unconfident young manager, Molly Mahoney (Natalie Portman), the store decides to throw an unusual tantrum. As a skeptical accountant named Henry (Jason Bateman) comes in to audit the Legos® and Lincoln Logs®, not to mention the Whodathoughts and Whatchamacallits, the once sparkling, color-saturated Emporium is suddenly embattled by mysterious changes. The playful toys are all still there, but they’ve turned gray and quiet – and only Mahoney and Henry can revive them if, with the help of a superdexterous 9 year-old (Zach Mills), they can find the source of magic inside themselves.
So there are definite similarities in the story between Magorium and the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. So how is it in execution? Well, we won’t find out until late November when it hits theaters, but from the looks of the trailer it looks like a miss.
What’s wrong with it? Well, first of all, Natalie Portman seems a little old to be playing the “girl” Magorium is giving his shop to. Even from the trailer it leaves a bad taste, like that moppet Dakota Fanning might have been better casting. Secondly, the movie looks like it’s going to suffer from George Lucas syndrome, where every shot and sequence has to feature the store doing something magical in the background. That sort of thing is distracting. Finally, it features Jason Bateman as the bad guy, a stuffy accountant who doesn’t believe. As much as I like Bateman and loved “Arrested Development”, this guy isn’t exactly a box office draw. In fact, his last few flicks didn’t do well at all (who really saw The Ex?).

Sounds a bit like Toys, that suckfest starring Robin Williams. And Portman can't act for shit, I wouldn't mind seeing Dakota in the role even if she's probably too young.
I guess that's why she was nominated for an Oscar for Closer a couple of years ago where she had to hold her own against Julie Roberts, Clive Owen & Jude Law.
Im with you Koko, Portman is very talented, though I have to agree with Rafe that shes too old to be playing ANY kind of "girl", with Closer didnt she take a bold step towards being a moret actor? That was the right move for her and this seems like kind of a step back id say. And Dakota creeps me out, im sorry but having any type of discussion with a girl her age about doing a Rape scene bothers me, and the fact that she did it, and her parents let her do it, its all very wrong, shes got about 2 more years before shes hooked on crack or something.
Ummm also, I like Jason Bateman a lot, hes really funny and talented but he needs to get a new agent who will focus on getting him good projects, hes on his way to making CB's "Actors who dont care" list before his prime.
Portman may be able to act but as star wars and v shows she also has great ability to at times stink beyond belief. Portmans career is over she is already accepting roles in karate films with Jet Li, how sad.
