 Will Ferrell stars in Semi-Pro, an outrageous comedy set in 1976 against the backdrop of the maverick ABA – a fast-paced, wild and crazy basketball league that rivaled the NBA and made a name for itself with innovations like the three-point shot and slam dunk contest. Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who used the profits from the success of his chart-topping song “Love Me Sexy” to achieve his dream of owning a basketball team. But Moon’s franchise, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league and in danger of folding when the ABA announces its plans to merge with the NBA. If they want to survive, Jackie and the Tropics must now do the seemingly impossible – win.  It’d be easy to rip Will Ferrell a new one for doing yet another sports parody… if only they weren’t all so damn funny. Ok, Kicking and Screaming was a disaster, but Talladega Nights was a gut buster. Even Blades of Glory, for all its bloated flaws had some genuinely hilarious moments. And sure, Will Ferrell does a lot of sports comedies, but each with a completely different way of taking on the sport Will has chosen for mocking. It’s not like Will is recycling the same jokes. Well, except for the one where he rips off his clothes and runs around in a pair of dirty tighty-whiteys. Oh and the one where he’s drunk and fat. Ok, maybe there are some repeats in there. Call me stupid, but I laugh every time. So even though this is Will Ferrell’s fourth sports comedy in three years, I’m looking forward to it. When he’s on his game, there’s no one funnier than Will (except of course for anyone in a Judd Apatow film). In Semi-Pro he plays some sort of fat, drunken basketball player, which ought to be good for a laugh. Wait, didn’t he play that character in Blades of Glory? No, wait that was Talladega Nights. They’re all starting to run together. Why am I looking forward to this again? Oh god, what’s wrong with me that I think this is going to be funny? I might as well give it up and start watching American Idol. My credibility is so fucking screwed. Thanks Will Ferrell. By making me laugh you’ve ruined my life.
