Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon are reprising their roles from the original HBO series. The show’s longtime executive producer, Michael Patrick King, is set to write and direct. Additionally, Chris Noth, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler and Jason Lewis will return as the women’s love interests. Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) has also joined the cast of the film and will play Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant, a new character to be introduced in the film.

There’s no point in hiding it. I’m not a fan of the series and never have been. I’ve only seen a few episodes. So bear in mind that I may be proceeding from a position of ignorance here and correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the show supposed to be about female empowerment, and the way women could be women but still be independent and strong, career minded and live their own lives without glomming on to a man as the only possible way for them to find fulfillment? No? Because what we’ve seen from Sex and the City: The Movie so far seems to paint itself as a film about four women getting married as fast as they can, with as big a wedding as they can, and popping out kids at warp speed, career, independence and whatever the fuck else be damned.

Maybe the show was always like that and I’d simply missed it. Maybe the show was always about how helpless and worthless women are without men and babies to validate them. Or maybe the trailer’s just marketing it that way because Hollywood believes that women can’t possibly be interested in anything that isn’t focused entirely on women finding men to take care of them and wearing pretty dresses. Those cynical bastards. Odd timing when you consider 2008 is the year America had its first legitimate female candidate for the office of United States President.

Still, things are looking good if you’re a fan of watching 50-year-old women hang around talking about sex and pretending they don’t have mustaches. Personally, I liked it better the first time when it was called ‘The Golden Girls’. I guess that makes Sarah Jessica Parker the new Bea Arthur and Kim Cattrall the new Estelle Getty. There will be sex in this city. Just not necessarily good sex. It may however, do a damned good job of setting the womens’ movement back thirty or forty years.

    Watch this one flop!

  1. Liv Says:

Oy Vey! You're giving a preview on a show you've not completely seen? NIce...
Watch all of the seasons on dvd, buster -- then talk to me about (Yes) vibrant, funny, smart, intuitive women dealing with getting older, aging parents, infertility, waning confidence, cancer, sexuality and finding a loving, warm home amongst people who help you back up when you get knocked down. That goes for the male & female characters on the show.
    Lived it.
    Loved it.
    Cannot WAIT for the movie...

Liv, no I am not giving a preview on a show I've not completely seen. I'm previewing the movie.

I'm sure the show is great. My criticism is not leveled at the show. My concern is that perhaps the movie may not be representative of all those great things you're telling me about the show.

  1. susy Says:

I can't wait to see it! I have all the series on DVD. I think it's going to be really good and have a good twist. Personally, I hope she leave Big at the alter :) haha! Anyways, I hope it's great.

  1. Misa Says:

I don't think the series was about female empowerment. The show doesn't take a position like that, instead it reflects on what it is to be over single and over 30 and a woman. Are we right to want to be independant?, Can you have it all, or is it just a huge crock anyway? If you do choose that family life is what you want, how much should you sacrifice in order to get your man? Where is the line between selfishness and too much compromise? and as modern women, can we admit that maybe being an empowered female, isn't all it's cracked up to be? And not just that but there were also a lot of serious relationship issues women face.

You can blame the series (and I do!!!) for many things, such as the, IMHO, irritating narration and sometimes blasé tone and rampant materialism. But no one has touched more relevant themes in a TV series in a long time.

Is it a good timing for the movie? I don't think so. It's a bit late in the product's life cycle. The novelty has probably worn off, and key humourous motifs (like the shoe obsession) have been knocked off so many times I can't see how they will make them funny anymore. And if they change too many key elements, how is it going to resemble the series?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. But who cares if the actresses are pushing 50, as long as they portray 30 yo women well. Does anyone care that Sean Connery isn't much older than Harrison Ford but still played his father in Indiana Jones and the last Crusade? Suspension of disbelief is a pre-requisite to every work of fiction, some more than others that's all.

  1. Stephanie Chavarin Says:

I did not know that an empowered female could not want to marry and have children, even by the time she is in her mid-forties. It must have escaped me that WOMEN are islands, unlike men, and that they are feeble and pathetic if they need another human person to share their lives with, man or child.

In fact, despite the fact that they all waited until their careers were well established and they had struck a stride in their lives before even thinking of men or children, I must look down my nose at them for ever having anything else to say about life other than commentary on career and politics, because thats what feminism means : to disconnect from our human sides, masculine or feminine.

Both the show and the movie are about people. And people are emotional and empathetic, and yes, sometimes they even need other people. As a woman, I am sick of feeling like I have to be a robot to be taken seriously. I want a child; I want to nurture her, and bless her with my love. It is part of my life plan, and I would be just as disappointed in my life if I did not have a chance to live it out as if I had never gotten my degree or any other non-"domestic" pursuit I've had.

As soon as you judge people for their life choices, because they are choices, not pathetic needs for validation, then you will bound yourself to a life of missing out on some of life's greatest offers.

I loved the show, the girls of the show have incredible dynamics among them, and they compliment each other in a way I have rarely get to see characters achieve. And furthermore, the stories are secondary to the way they are able to support each other through them and they do so, for the most part you see, with no man in sight.

  1. Heather Says:

You speak so positively about female empowerment one moment, and then turn around and make cracks about "50-year-old women... pretending they don't have mustaches." It's this kind of vicious male criticism towards the aging female physique that causes older women to feel such neuroses and desperation regarding partners and children.

You can either denounce the show for supposedly abandoning the "independent female" mantra or you can be chauvinistic. Choose one.

  1. SUZY Says:

AS AN OVER 5O, WAY OVER 5O YEAR OLD WOMAN, I HATE TO TELL YOU BUT I DONT HAVE A MOUSTACHE AND OWCH, THAT WAS VERY CATTY. NOT NECESSARY, MY FRIEND. SOME WEEKEND WHEN YOU NEED A BREAK, BREAK OUT THIS SERIES AND I THINK YOU WILL SEE WHAT ALL THE HULLABALO WAS AND IS ABOUT. HBO STILL GIVES US THE RERUNS ON ITS ON DEMAND AND I JUST RE-SAW 6 OF SOME OF THE BEST TV EVER. AND I WAS WEANED ON TV, ALL THE GREATS, WE WERE ONE OF THE FIRST IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO HAVE A TV.

MY FRIEND (WHO IS 28 YEARS YOUNGER THAN I AND ALSO SINGLE) HAVE A GAME PLANE FOR OPENING DAY, WE HOPE TO SEE THE MOVIE THREE TIMES, BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND DINNER. WE ARE TOTALLY EXCITED AND CONSIDER OURSELVES DISCERNING MOVIE GOERS. LETS FACE IT, THERE IS A SERIOUS ABSENCE OF DECENT MOVIES THESE PAST FEW YEARS. IN THE MEANWHILE. WE ARE REJOICING AT THIS UPCOMING GREAT TIME! THANKS FOR LETTING ME SHARE.

  1. Adam Says:

I have no idea who would want to watch this example of "Golden Girls Gone Wild". Frankly the word "sex" shouldn't be used in any title that includes Sara Jessica Parker (or Cynthia Nixon for that matter). Ugh! At least Kim Cattrall isn't bad looking for her age and has decent talent. Kirsten Davis is pretty fair looking, however she's always been a horrible actress all the way back to her hideous work on fairly decent Melrose Place.

This movie isn't the bomb. It IS going to bomb outside of the small 5% of its female viewship, the majority of which appears to come from NY and LA. Bad show, even worse film judging by the trailer dialogue. Razzies here we come!

  1. Karen Says:

So what if the movie flops, will you get pleasure out of that if it does? Cant understand why people need to write nasty comments on something that they had no interest in the first place. I loved the series and even though Im sure the movie will in no way live up to it, I'm still looking forward to seeing all of the characters again. To say that it shouldn't have Sex in the title cos of some of the actresses in it is just sooooooo childish, so are you saying unattractive women shouldnt have sex? Anyway, you are missing the point of what this show was about. Women could relate to all of the characters in it at some stage which made it totally consuming, doesnt matter what the women in it looked like or if they ended up marrying with kids or not, you couldnt not but feel good about yourself after watching an episode. So me and half the population of my city will be there at the opening night (and Im from a city in the west of Ireland!)

  1. Connie Says:

I was always insulted by the show and embarrassed at how many women bought it. They always struck me as four lonely, empty women, who validated themselves by having as many liaisons as possible. I can only assume the movie is more of the same.

  1. Liv Says:

Wow.. lots of misinformation here! The actors and the characters' ages match, actually. And as a producer who's lived in NYC, LA, Iowa, Paris Atlanta & etc -- As a mother of two very bright young ladies & a feminist femme fatale from way back -- Uhm...I gotta say -- This film will gross $100 million domestic 1st weekend. Another $50 at least from Internattional.

It looks, feels and sounds g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s. This show was & is just a comedy about glamour and fun of feeling fabulous -- why is that so bad?? Fer cryin' out loud --rent It Happened One Night or His Girl Friday or Philadelphia Story.

    Glamour is back. Thank God!
