Official Plot Synopsis
Based on the series of 90’s graphic novels (thick comic books for the non-geeks out there) by Frank Miller, Sin City looks to take the by now tired obsession with bringing the comic book feel to the silver screen to an almost too literal level. It does so by giving the comic’s creator Frank Miller a director’s chair right alongside Robert Rodriguez. Rodriguez actually quit the director’s guild to get Miller a co-director credit, so don’t expect Miller to be just a figurehead.

Everything seen from the movie so far bears that out. The trailer is an almost too straight translation of the comic, with bland black and white digital shots sewn with occasional teases of color. That’s worked before in movies like Pleasantville, where the appearance of color is used as part of the plot, building as the tension in the film builds until we’re awash in an explosion of color. Sin City appears to be doing it just because it looks pretty. By the end of the trailer I was already sick of the stark black and white and ready for more reds, I can’t imagine this thing holding my attention in so much black and white all the way through.

Whether the story will be gripping enough to offset that is anyone’s guess. The cast is flooded with big name stars, which more often than not is a bad thing rather than good. The film’s name implies lots of sin though, which is always good.
