The Boxtrolls Synopsis
A family event movie from the creators of Coraline and ParaNorman that introduces audiences to a new breed of family – The Boxtrolls, a community of quirky, mischievous creatures who have lovingly raised an orphaned human boy named Eggs (voiced by Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in the amazing cavernous home they’ve built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. When the town’s villain, Archibald Snatcher (Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley), comes up with a plot to get rid of the Boxtrolls, Eggs decides to venture above ground, “into the light,” where he meets and teams up with fabulously feisty Winnifred (Elle Fanning). Together, they devise a daring plan to save Eggs’ family.

Laika Will Start Releasing One Movie A Year Very, Very Soon Laika Will Start Releasing One Movie A Year Very, Very Soon
If there’s one thing the stop-motion animation process is known for, it’s being painstakingly slow. Not only are the films put together one frame at a time with intense care and precision, there is an incredible amount of work that needs to go into development and construction long before the first shutter snap is even heard.

New Boxtrolls Images Reveal Quirky And Clever Character Traits New Boxtrolls Images Reveal Quirky And Clever Character Traits
If you've seen one Boxtroll, you've seen them all? Not quite. The trailers for Laika's stop-motion/CG hybrid animated film have given us some indication that each Boxtroll has their own look and style. That was further demonstrated in the art on display at CinemaCon this week, and now we have even more to go on, thanks to a memory game posted on the official Boxtrolls Facebook Page.

The Boxtrolls International Trailer Is Full Of Rhymes And Mischievous Boxtrolls The Boxtrolls International Trailer Is Full Of Rhymes And Mischievous Boxtrolls
They're shy. They're not brave. They're not pretty. But the Boxtrolls must learn to be heroes. And if the trailers for Laika's new film are trying to get us to fall in love with these adorable stop-motion/CG hybrid animated creatures, they're succeeding admirably. The latest trailer takes a Seussy approach in rhyming through its exposition...

The Boxtrolls Spotlights Insane Stop-Motion Production In New Trailer The Boxtrolls Spotlights Insane Stop-Motion Production In New Trailer
The trailer is a dialogue-free clip set to the song “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” a particularly fitting tune, considering the artists at Laika are responsible for creating each entire universe that their characters inhabit. They deftly take us through the entire process, from the skeletal wirework to the molding to the painting and stitching the costumes.

The Boxtrolls First Trailer Is A Shout-Out To Gay Families The Boxtrolls First Trailer Is A Shout-Out To Gay Families
Laika's next film The Boxtrolls probably doesn't have anything that much to do with gay characters either, but they've made a fascinating shout-out to gay families in the first trailer, which debuted today on Apple. Phrases like "families come in all shapes and sizes" are usually just bland shout-outs to single moms, divorced families, or kids being raised by grandparents or aunts and uncles (see the ending speech of Mrs. Doubtfire)

ParaNorman's Laika Sets The Boxtrolls As Their Third Animated Feature ParaNorman's Laika Sets The Boxtrolls As Their Third Animated Feature
Following last year's excellent 3D stop-motion animated comedy-horror film ParaNorman, those of us who fell in love with the movie were left to wonder what production company Laika might do next. As it happens, Laika is teaming up with Focus Features once again for their third film, following Coraline (2009) and ParaNorman (2012), with an adaptation of Alan Snow's popular fantasy adventure novel Here Be Monsters.
