Official Plot Synopsis

A new take on Wes Craven’s 1977 film of the same name, THE HILLS HAVE EYES is the story of a family road trip that goes terrifyingly awry when the travelers become stranded in a government atomic zone. Miles from nowhere, the Carters soon realize the seemingly uninhabited wasteland is actually the breeding ground of a blood-thirsty mutant family...and they are the prey.

If you’re really interested in The Hills Have Eyes then you’re not going to bother with seeing it in theaters. Aja’s first cut of the movie was slapped with an NC-17 by the oppressive MPAA, and so Aja’s movie has been edited down to get an R rating. If you’re a fan of this sort of film, then you’ll want to wait for the inevitable release of the NC-17 version on an unrated Director’s Cut DVD.

But if the MPAA is going to slap something with an NC-17, at least for a change they’re doing it because of violence and gore rather than because of the prudish nature of the American public. If you’re going to kill a movie do it because it’s too violent, not because there are people in it showing off what god gave them. God gave it to them after all, who are we to stifle his gifts?

Right. So this is a remake of a movie by Wes Craven, but the weird thing here is that the remake is being done with Craven’s blessing. In fact he’s serving as a producer, so I guess he too thought his original movie wasn’t very good and could stand a tune-up, otherwise why is anyone redoing it? Alexandre Aja’s probably the right choice to helm it. He’s responsible for the much loved by horror fans movie High Tension, and will no doubt port his brutal style right over to mutant zombie killers quite easily.
