Carl and Molly Peterson (Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson) are just starting their new life together--complete with a cute house, boring neighbors, stable jobs and the routines of newlywed existence. There's just one unfortunate hitch in their perfectly constructed new world... And his name's Dupree.

Randy Dupree (Owen Wilson), Carl's oldest friend and perpetual bachelor, has found himself with nowhere to go after being fired. Carl yanks his jobless/homeless pal out of the bar he's living in and invites him to temporarily crash on the couch--that's just what friends do.

At first, Carl is quite pleased to have his good buddy as a permanent couch guest, while Molly bears the brunt of Dupree's immature antics. But, as Carl becomes buried in his grown-up job, he finds it harder and harder to juggle Dupree and his responsibilities as a husband. To make matters worse, Dupree uses his ample spare time to become a great companion for Molly. Even her dad (Michael Douglas) and the neighbors are falling for his carefree wisdom and charm--frustrating Carl to no end.

Soon, everyone (but Carl) begins to root for Dupree to stick around. But as Dupree starts to become a fixture in the Peterson's home, three becomes not just a crowd...but a full- blown, hilarious catastrophe.

Usually you think of Owen Wilson as a leading man, but really he seems most comfortable as part of an ensemble. His best work has been in movies like Meet the Fockers, where he plays a secondary character, there to jump into a scene, steal the moment, and then jump back out. When thrust into the forefront, it’s usually part of a duo where Owen has someone else to play off of. In Shanghai Noon he’s the comedy relief opposite Jackie Chan. In Wedding Crashers he bounces gags off Vince Vaughn. Now in his latest, Owen steps into a threesome as the odd man out in You, Me, and Dupree.

He stars opposite the underrated Matt Dillon and the under-producing Kate Hudson. Neither of those actors is exactly a comedic tour de force, so it’ll be up to Owen to carry the laughter load. This is his niche, a perfect situation for him to do his thing. It’ll be up to directors Joe and Anthony Russo to use him right. They’re coming straight from the now dismantled set of Arrested Development, which bodes well for the film’s funny factor, but not necessarily it’s box office success.

For me, the real gem here is the film’s supporting cast, which sports the greatness of Seth Rogen. You might remember him as the young fellow who attended a donkey show in The 40 Year-Old Virgin. He’s comedic gold, and deserves a shot at getting outside the world of Judd Apatow, for whom he’s become something of a hilarity muse.

From all the trailers I've seen it looks like this movie is going to be wicked funny. I checked out the movie's site last night and instantly got hooked on this "Wisdom of Dupree" thing that have there. It's like an Owen Wilson magic 8-ball sort of thing...totally worth checking out.

  1. Rose Water Says:

    It's sounds pretty darn funny.
