Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem takes two of science fiction’s most beloved, enduring and absolutely terrifying creature creations and plays them strictly for shock value. The franchise’s first film AVP took the characters and at least attempted to tell a worthy story with them. Their mistake was in watering things down to suit a PG-13 audience. AVP-R now swings too far the other way, tossing out any pretense of story in favor of pure, unadulterated violence. The result is a movie every bit as awkward and laborious as its unwieldy, ridiculous title.
It starts right where the last movie left off, with a facehugger infected Predator orbiting Earth. That Predator crash lands, and starts spreading Aliens around a small, Colorado town. A second Predator, investigating the death of the first, shows up to start hunting Alien. He’s brought along with him a vial of magic liquid which, when dripped on something, has the incredible ability to disintegrate exactly what the Predator wants to. No more, no less. And so our new Predator friend prowls around Colorado killing Aliens and pouring his liquid on the remains, as if to hide the Alien infestation from humans, even though they already know about it, and even though he occasionally stops to skin a human and leave him hanging in public. Not very secretive. While we’re at it, it’s never entirely clear what the heck the film’s Predator is trying to accomplish to begin with. His magic disintegration liquid would seem to suggest he’s trying to achieve some sort of infestation containment, but with one Predator up against literally hundreds of Aliens that’s quite clearly impossible. Perhaps he’s simply there for sport, hunting a new breed of Alien/Predator hybrid which shows up in the film, but if that’s the case then what’s with all the trouble to hide the remains of his Alien kills? The movie’s premise is flawed right from the start. There’s no real logic to it, except to say the movie happens the way it does because it’s a movie in which a single Predator fights a bunch of Aliens in Colorado.
Meanwhile, the film introduces various groups of small town humans to serve as Alien fodder while our Predator friend hangs around in the shadows. They’re typical horror movie pretty people, most of whom seem to behave as if they’re trapped in a zombie movie instead of something called Aliens vs. Predator. The few who live long enough to become the film’s hero characters are so poorly developed you’re unlikely to remember their names, let alone anything else about them. She’s the pretty girl. He’s the reformed thief. This guy is the town sheriff and so on.
The humans don’t matter, since the film exists only to deliver rampant gore and violence. That it does, without hesitation. AVP-R takes special pleasure in delivering vicious death to beautiful women, children, babies, and pregnant women. I get it, I understand why the film’s directors the Strause Brothers want to have a chest burster leap out of a kid just as he calls out for hid dad. It’s more shocking. Hollywood shies away from hurting kids, because, well, mainstream audiences don’t want to see it. But AVP-R seems to take special delight in it, probably because we aren’t used to seeing it. Perhaps they think they’re pushing boundaries by doing it. Whatever. I guess the Strause boys should get at least a little credit for keeping AVP-R free of murdered dogs. They prefer fetuses instead.
Unfortunately, violence against weak, helpless opponents is all AVP-R has to offer. The entire film is cloaked in rain and fog and extreme dark making it impossible to discern what’s going on in any of its more action heavy sequences. The Strause brothers make sure you can see Alien babies leaping out of a pregnant woman’s belly, but when the Predator grapples with a group of Aliens it’s impossible to figure out who’s punching who or what’s eating what. It gets boring fast.
I’m not sure who the audience is for this movie. If it’s gorehounds, they’ll probably be disappointed by all the dark shadows and dim lighting which obscure so much of the action. If it’s fans of the AVP franchise or either of the creatures being meshed together here, they’re likely to end up wishing AVP-R had bothered to include some sort of story. It’s a cruel mess of a movie released at Christmas, the worst possible time for a film dedicated to the senseless worship of blood, guts, and gratuitous killing. I can’t think of any reason for anyone to bother seeing it.

1st thing 1st - watching AVP2 leaves me feeling.....nothing, empty!
I have got all the Alien and Predator Movies in my collection. Will probably get AVP as well. As for AVP2, forgot it! I'm not even interested in owning any VCD or DVD on it. If it comes out on TV, I will watch it (just for the francise sake...) but nothing more.
Personally, AVP2 is totally worse off than AVP and wasted - story-wise, character-wise, acting-wise, directing-wise. Everything about AVP2 is "double" thumb-down.
Forgetting about everything else, AVP2 does not even measure up in term of blood and gore in any horror element. Not even the fighting scenes between the 2 monsters evoke *any*excitement or adreline-rush. Obama vs Hillary is even more interesting to watch...
Absolutely horrible movie. Shows more "Female Empowerment" than avp. They came up with this "hybrid" idea but didn't bother to show it to us properly, when I say properly I mean the entire body structure and movements instead just glimpse from here and there. Didn't show the complete alien bodies either like its franchise did, just the head. The first part was much better than this crap. I was hoping some cool action between the hybrid and the predetor, and what I get: some more crap and more "Female Empowerment" which is a good thing by the way, but it completely ruined the film. The first alien movie was superb, and it maintained the balance through and through.
I wish these creatures were real, so that I could throw the entire team infront of them.
Saw the film on opening weekend. Dragged the whole family out and boy .. did I get egg on my face..?
What a massive disappointment. It should have been so much better than what was produced. Reminded me of low budget straight to DVD/VHS films of the past.Has this film rendered both franchises extinct? Only time will tell, but I'll be eating humble pie over this Turkey for quite some time.
Whilst AVP 1 wasn't outstanding, it was a decent film with an imaginitive storyline, reasonably acted and a sprinkling of recognisable faces.
Save your money on this one and see it on DVD ( rental only ) as you won't want it in your collection, and hopefully the numerous mishaps on requiem will not be repeated on AVP3 if it survives this 'car crash'.
Oh, shit most complain like pansies, when the fact it have the laws of the alien incubation period before a chest buster gets out, the film deliver something most consider a taboo, an alien will attack anything is in their way, they don't give a damn is it male or female (pregnant or not) is just meat, in fact something hard to set in a film with aliens (using as genering to take both alien and predator) is that they don't speak English or other language (in the predators movies they do so, because they're imitating their prey sounds) so you can't clearly understand their actions at all, even more if you cant stand a good gore movie then just see winnie pooh or something that fit your standars, because as it is si fine to me
Hmmm. Just seen the film on its first day of release (Eagerly awaited by me, at least!)
My first reaction is disappointment but, I'll go see it again to identify just what I missed and to hopefully, give it a better review.
As someone who was blown away by the first Alien when released and similarly excited by the first Predator film, the whole franchise holds dear with me - I just hoped, it wouldn't leave me as disgusted and hollow when I saw the flop that was Alien3.
As for those of you in the US who were horrified to see the pregnant women/impregnation scene, well us over here in blighty wont flinch at such images. I thought, this was meant to be a no-holds-barred film suitable for those over 18. It has been watered down to such a level that these sort of gory delights have been barred from us. Pah!!! Pussies...
Yep, the human characters DID need developing. That element was sooooo poor that you didn't give a hoot about them. Bad move. Yep too, it was about introducing the Predalien and all his new "ways" and, how the Predator who came to earth deal with his challenge via his inimitable hunting skills. This was presented quite well.
The film sheer flew by which I guess, shows it was enjoyable but, I love these characters so much that maybe I just wanted it to be a rip-roaring success? Anyhoo, I don’t doubt there will be the nay-sayers will be out in their droves panning it (Boo).
Disappointed about the get out of jail free card in the bomb solution. No imagination there but, it is left open in that in the final scene, some lady (?) seems to leave a hint of a knowledge of the technology left behind in the Predators shoulder weapon. Or not..........................
I'd see an AVP 3,4,5 or 6 just cos I love it. Similarly, an Alien 5 (Please God - are you listening SigourneyXXX)
I suggest you go see it. Enjoy it for what it's worth. Anyone under 35 -ish is likely to treat it with distain criticising the whole Alien/Predator franchise as seems to be the ways.
A film created with a good idea of the scene but, dispense with the poxy US college kids input and make it more real, frightening, despairing, with heroes. I want to care about the individuals, fell they are in sheer desperation and somehow (and not with cheap solutions) come through.
First off, I'd like to say I'm not a fan of either the Alien or Predator franchises. I've never seen any of the films in either of them. I've also never seen the first AVP movie. I'm not a horror monger, and my viewing of horror movies has been limited to the Underworld franchise, Dracula 2000, and Silence of the Lambs. I went to see this movie because my boyfriend wanted me too, being a fan of the Predator, someone less of the Aliens. and a fan of AVP 1. He told me "You made me see Stardust" (which he enjoyed) "trust me. Have I ever let you down?"
He hated this movie as much as I did, and he has far more of a stomach for gore than I do. He's seen all the SAW movies, he doesn't flinch from gore. But still he found the killing of infants and children to be too much, and he agrees that a horror, gore fest movie needs some sort of story to make us care. The humans in this movie were retarded at best, I think the stupid kid brother didn't deserve to live. The only parts of this movie I enjoyed were the one liners like "I taught this slut everything she knows" and "The government would never lie to us."
Perhaps this is just the ramblings of an education major, but children are far more innocent than adults, and I for one don't want to see them die in pointless, bloodbaths such as this. Hell I don't want to see them die period.
I'd also like to point out that while I'm agnostic, I still think it was in horrible taste to release this on Christmas, but since I wasn't forced to endure this on that day I guess I won't complain.
Lastly, someone with a screen name like "Angel of Death" shouldn't be spewing pro-life messages on a forum for movies, for fucks sake. Unless you're a woman, you have NO right to say anything about it. The chose to abort is between a woman and her doctor. No one else, except perhaps the father. Be that as it may, I STILL don't want to see infants sucked out of their mothers to make room for aliens. As others have stated it's disgusting, purely revolting gore-porn. Like this entire movie.
If I offended anyone mea culpa, but no matter how much I want an apology from FOX for making this piece of shit movie, I'll never get one. At least I got one from my boyfriend.
I've been a fan of the AvP world since the Pred 2 trophy scene as well as the original Dark Horse comic's story line. I was mind raped by the first AvP film and AvP-R made me leave the theater wondering "Did I enjoy this, or not?" So, I paid to see it a second time a week later. I came to the conclusion, "yes I enjoyed it.... visually."
I understand how movie production works, but why the producers gave this script a green light, baffles me. If there's a third AvP coming to the table, there needs to be some serious changes, starting with dumping Salerno as the writer. High schoolers could have done a better job. Alec Gillis can stick with Alien design, but Predator needs to go back in the hands of Stan Winston. The fully extended mandibles look ridiculous. No more casting TV-series actors. The films need actors who take their job seriously and have at the very least 2 big picture experiences under their belts. Hell, maybe it's time to have Predator(s) be the lead character(s), after all, it almost seemed he was the main character in AvP-R at times anyway.
I think the Bros. deserve a better rap. They seriously were given a steamy turd and had to make something good out of it. Their main faults were the battle scenes that were shot so dark, it's hard to see what's going on. That's when seeing the film a second time benefitted. The lack of "visual numbers" attacking the National Guard was a bit cheap in my opinion. Definately keep the sound crew from this film for the next project, and Brian Tyler was a good choice for the score as well.
I thought the Strauses saying this was a good movie, made by fans for the fans was the most hysterical part of this film. I checked, recent box office figures. Domestically the film has made around $40 million, AVP-1 made $80 million domestically. Internationally, it's yet to hit $40 million and total box office is sitting at about $74 million. The fans have spoken. DVD sales may end up just saving the franchise. If Fox execs have a desire not have a bigger failure with a third outing, then invest in a good screen writer and director. The Strauses and Salerno don't deserve another shot. Like I've said earlier, I have a feeling Fox will try a "Batman Begins" with the franchises and seperate them, but of course they'll stink too.
I loved this movie.
It was funny coz in the bit were that women said that she thought the government was lying and the other woman said the government never lies some guy starting cracking up.
dez gibson, the chestburster it's established in all the Alien films, developes and feeds from nutrients parasitically obtained from its host. It essentially hijacks the nutrients from its host. That's why Kane was incredibly hungry when he woke from the stasis the face hugger placed him in Alien, and why it takes hours to develope and grow. It doesn't "eat" the host, nor has it ever needed an unborn foetus to feed from. AVP Requiem wants us now to believe the chestburster literally requires a pregnant female's developing foetus to eat and grow (within minutes apparently). Salerno and the Strauses want us to now accept the chestburster/s have to eat flesh to develope. It's a stupid and ineffective idea that failed to work, unfortunately it's made it into the final version of an "alien" film and so becomes canon.
I'd like to throw my opinion of this film out there. this film was alot better that the other avp. the aliens made the right noises, the background sound when the camera was on the predator was the correct sample from the oringal film. it was full of fights which i was able to understand who was hitting who. th only thing that i can find wrong with this film apart from the human characters was the fact it was set in the wrong timeline. AVP like the games should be set in the time of the colonial marines. i dont want to see county bumkins getting slaughtered, i want hardcore marines tooled up to a close standard as the predator. Then you would have a real fight. As to the comments about why change the alien breeding cycle, its a new type of alien and all other film bring their own new angle on the aliens. aliens intorduces the hive idea with facehuggers having a single chance to spawn a xenomorph, alien three the facehugger implants 2 eggs, alien resurection has live births from the queen so why cant the predalien for nest of chestbuster in to hosts??
i have read most of the comment that you guys have left and i didnt think that AVP2 wasnt all that bad but again about the kids dying and the pergant women it couldnt have shown what happen to them but aliens arent just going to pass them up because of their type. There monsters and they dont know anything but to kill and repuredoce more of them selves. I didnt like though how everything was dark and what not but u could understand the fight secne just fine. The story was ok it didnt go into the charater that well but most ppl just like to see predators kill alien like i do. i wish that fight at the end would of been a little better though how everything ended was dumb.
Simone....not sure where you got your happy ending from in The Mist. Tom Jane's character shot his son and three others in vain and the only protagonists who survive are him and the woman from the store who asked for someone to go with her to save her son. AVP Requiem on the other hand has a helicopter full of survivors/protagonists and (gasp) a Predator Plasma canon also...Not clear about your criteria but I'd say The Mist had a far bleaker and far less predictable ending.
Here is an example of a film heavily influenced by Aliens and Predator, that uses homage BUT...actually works, unlike AVPR. DOG SOLDIERS. The film takes it's cue very clearly from the films Aliens and Predator. It's a simple siege film, not a very intricate plot but where it surpasses AVPR is in the quality of the writing, casting, directing and acting and all done on a far smaller budget than AVPR (budget is a gripe some shills are offering as the reason why AVPR has failed so far). The writer/director gives us characters we care about (and without too much exposition..which is another gripe of the "fanboys" and shills who support AVPR who just want "alien fodder" and predator gadgets), so when they do get killed, their deaths have an impact in the film. UNLIKE AVPR. Where's the homage you may ask? The writer/director doesn't steal from Aliens and Predator..that's too easy and far too dumb. He actually takes lines and scenes from another siege film (and AVPR is a siege film) ZULU. BUT...Theses scenes work because again, they're written and acted very well. They're not filmed for cheap effect and "wink wink" value...they actually work for the film. Salerno's screenplay is attrocious along with "The Brothers Strause's" directing. Compare these similar films and you can see the difference quality writing and acting can do for a fantasy/horror film with a simple premise.
I completely agree with You're Joking. I really enjoyed this movie and found it quite refreshing in the horror-genre. I went to the theatre expecting gore, terrible acting and even worse plot, and good old-fashioned horror mixed in with characters that die terribly.
First its an R-rated movie. What in the world can you expect?? When you go to an R-rated movie, anything goes in regards to violence. Why in the world would you take a child to see an R-rated movie in the first place, and then complain about it?? There are plenty of PG-13 and under movies out there. It's not like you're forced to take your kid to an R-rated movie.
Second, to even bring up the idea that this movie had anything to do with any abortion statement is a bit over the top. That's like saying the dog-chestburster had something to do with a statement about dog killing. I don't even understand where you can make the connection between an abortion statement and the idea of a biological creature using pregnant women as a way to reproduce its young. Abortions are committed by humans- not aliens! So...whatever insinuation you are trying to bring up about abortions and AVP:R is fairly far-fetched, in my opinion.
Third, all human life has intrinsic value, regardless of the state of life. Why is OK to kill an adult in a movie, and not OK to kill a child in a movie?? Especially an R-rated movie?? Of course we have a natural aversion to the idea of helpless pregnant women and children being killed. But personally, I also have a natural aversion to the idea of grown men and women being killed too! This movie capitalized on the sociologically-ingrained idea that you have to save the "women and children". Honestly, I applaud them for having the guts to stand out from other horror movies and kill characters we normally wouldn't expect to be killed. The people who released this movie figured out how to systematically disgust the audience with extreme and atypical violence against usually saved characters. It has shock value that many modern horror movies won't dare to venture into.
Fourth...I applaud the ending. This movie is more of a tragedy than your typical horror movie where most people escape and survive (ala "The Mist"). The actions of the military are very bold in this movie and I was pleasantly surprised that they actually went through with their plans! I definitely was not expecting this.
Fifth, I'm glad that Predator was more of a tough character in this movie. It was nice to see Pred return to the "one man army" concept.
I have to admit that I am amazed that someone chooses to label the killing of children or pregnant women as inappropriate or taboo in a modern horror/action flick. Seriously? What exactly is it, in your arbitrary opinion of morality, that makes the life of a child or pregnant women so much more valuable than the life of any other human being? Is killing elderly or handi-capped individuals also taboo? Maybe we should emphasize in all future horror/disaster flicks that travesty and disaster can only happen to fit, capable, and strong males who have no living relatives and clearly deserve their fates. People, all people, get killed every day. There is no reason an R-rated horror film, where death is expected and appropriate, should have to shy away from killing a kid. Indeed, it is refreshing far less typical when the kid doesn't miraculoulsy escape.
Some_strange_dude Says:
(i also felt the same way with alien ressurection). But then it was paul anderson directing and writing the script...what could i expect.
I thought Joss Wheden directed Alien Resurrection.
"Do you know what resurrection means? It means raise the dead and just who do you think you are that you can raise the dead!"
Just over 20 million dollars domestically and released in just over 2000 theaters. AVP1 did over 80 million dollars domestically. So...unless AVPR does amazingly well overseas, this should be the last AVP film, and the shills praising "the brothers Strause" and bleating about "they'll get the next one right" will probably not be getting that chance, if there's some justice in this world. So now there's one more positive aspect to this film...good creature designs AND probably no more sequels. If DVD sales also stiff, like Hudson says.."game over man...game over". My money's on straight to DVD for a next AVP or a Sci Fi Channel "Orginal". Fox I think will seperate the two franchises and probably pull a "Batman Begins"to "reimagine" or "relaunch" the franchises. Which of course will stink too (let's face it they won't spend money on a writer/director the level of Chris Nolan). John Cena's probably licking his lips right now...come on Predator/Dutch...come on baby.
i was looking up this a lil more and in the old dark horse comic serious.. it said that the queen had the ability to lay an egg with the queen traits.. but yeah i can see where there was a wole in the plot because you never were able to pick up that the last egg had those traits..
but in my honest opinion after seeing the movie again.. i dont see a AVP3 in the future.. the next movie is going to have to go into more detail about the W-Y company.. and explain more of the companies interest of space colonies, and catching aliens and try to use them as weapons.. hopefully this will shead light on the SPACEJOCKS.. i have a feeling the next flick is goin to involve the space colonies, or humans goin to a new plant and rediscovering the aliens/ eggs.. then bringing one back.. or some how going to war or gettin into a conflict with the SPACEJOCKS and them leaving the egg behind to kill them and reproduce.. i dont know.. maybe i should work on writing the script myself.. LOL..
I want to clarify a point also. I grasp the idea of the amoral Alien and that it has only two imperatives...multiply and survive. That's part of the terror of the Alien and I like that dynamic. So a child being used to incubate a chestburster is not shocking when viewed in that context. Certainly it was implied in Aliens by Newt herself. My issue is that if the Predalien is some kind of androgynous alien or "new" queen....then be consistent with that. It had ample opportunity to begin impregnating others from the beginning of the film after it reached full maturity....it sniffs a pregnant woman and all of a sudden is a "queen"? Sorry, that just looks like a bad plot device to pull some cheap shock value. Furthermore, aliens don't require female incubators exclusively to breed, both sexes are used readily. This is just bad writing and totally inconsistent which detracts from the movie experience. Yeah...it's just a monster movie but the franchise has always had a high bar even with Alien Resurrection....till the AVP films.
