For the first time ever, we have a Harry Potter movie that isn’t an ensemble piece. Unlike any of the films before it, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is focused squarely on Harry. In constructing the film, David Yates said his goal was to make it primarily about Harry’s state of mind. He does that, but takes it so far that he does so to the movie’s detriment.
The film exists, more than any of the others, in sort of a perpetually dim, drab twig light world. We find Harry right from the outset lurking in it, transformed into an angsty, bitter, and hormonal teenager who seems to lash out at anyone and everyone, whether or not he has a reason. As it is in each of these movies, the mysterious dark lord Voldemort has returned and continues to make life hard for Harry. This time he seems to have chosen to do it through the Wizard media. The new Wizard government has decided that Voldemort doesn’t exist, and that for the past couple of years Harry has just made the whole thing up. He’s slandered in the newspapers and used as a political tool, which only serves to make Harry’s newfound teen angst even angstier.
Eventually Harry gets back to the secretive school of Hogwarts where he’s to undergo another year of tutelage. Till then there’s a lot of rushing around and talking urgently, but nothing really seems to happen. The pace doesn’t pick up once he’s at school either, as the movie follows the now perpetually cranky Harry through a needlessly complex political plot which eventually results in the takeover of the school by a new headmistress who can only be described as a sick and twisted sadist. She immediately sets about sucking the life right out of Hogwarts, and all the fun of the previous movies goes missing in favor of a bitchy, pain-in the ass Harry and a boorish, listless, sad school full of mindless, put upon drones.
Most distressing about Order of the Phoenix is how poorly constructed it is as a movie. Harry is the central figure here, with everyone else relegated to the status of Harry Potter wallpaper, but he doesn’t seem to have any specific character arc. It takes awhile for the movie to get there, but eventually some things happen. However you never get the sense that they’ve really had much of an effect on him. Worse, the film is almost impossibly hard to follow for anyone who hasn’t read, studied, and memorized every page of the Harry Potter books. Minor characters and names are thrown out with complete abandon, as if the filmmaker expects us to know the life history of that girl from scene 24 whose name was only mentioned once two years ago. The Potter movies have always ridden that edge catering too strongly to the readers of the books, and sometimes they’ve suffered as movies because of it. Books and movies are different mediums, and the Harry Potter hasn’t always understood that. Yet this is the first of the bunch to completely abandon all pretense of being a decent film, and instead goes straight for blatant, obscure, fan pandering. Anyone who isn’t an obsessive Potter devotee will be completely lost, and though the franchise’s legions will no doubt love it, it’s a pretty lousy film.
The movie really becomes a mess when it tries to take its characters into different locations. It jumps around almost with no respect paid to figure out how the hell any of the movie’s characters got there. When they ride brooms, you never actually see them land anywhere. Instead the movie goes for shots of the riders in the air, and then as if they’re in some sort of bad 70s sitcom they suddenly walk out of the bushes and wave to passers by. When Harry and his friends suddenly show up in a snowy, deserted village miles from Hogwarts, you assume that perhaps they might have taken a broom. But later in the movie, they’re suddenly unable to figure out a way to get to a different location. Well how the hell did you get everywhere else? Aren’t you Wizards? Why don’t you hop on one of those magic brooms that seem to be lying around all over the place? It’s as if the kids go places when it’s convenient for the script, and are unable to find transportation when the movie’s looking for an excuse to make them ride freakish looking zombie because they might look kind of cool. Order of the Phoenix throws out ideas and locations as if we’re supposed to know what’s happening before it happens, with no concern paid to any of the film’s viewers who are just there to see a movie without engaging in a pre-viewing research project using a stack of J.K. Rowling’s books.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix represents a depressing step backward for these movies. Harry Potter newcomer David Yates has sucked the life right out of the room and his characters. The script just doesn’t work unless you’ve got a Cliff’s Notes version of the novels there with you. Also missing along with coherent plot development are any of those really defining moments we’ve gotten in the other films. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban had that great character moment where Hermione punches Malfoy’s lights out. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire had the brilliantly constructed, wonderfully sweet and awkward school dance. Order of the Phoenix has nothing like that, preferring instead to live in a monotone, droning world of blah. Luckily for Yates, though the movie itself is something akin to a disaster it also contains the best performances we’ve seen in the movies so far. Radcliffe’s Potter may be kind of a buzz kill, but he’s good at playing it and does a decent job of carrying the movie on his shoulders. It’s just a shame that the series had to get so bland, do nothing, and dreary in order to get this kind of work out of him.

Lord of the Rings, unlike this movie; was a film first, and a movie version of the book second.
This Potter movie is a movie version of the book first and a film second... as a result it's not a very good movie and it's a mess if you haven't read the book.
Film and print are completely different mediums. If you want to blame JKR's books fine, but I see the problem being (at least in part) the way this particular book has been brought to the screen.
There was no way to include everything from the 800 page book and so goes the same for the previous films. If you cant remember a name that a character has said from the previous films, why even watch the films because books and films 1-7 are supposed to be seen, basically one film, like "Star Wars," so follow along and enjoy these movies because theyre wonderful and amazing. When its all said and done, there wont be any other film franchise in history to be like "Harry Potter" in terms of using the same actors in all 7 films, the story, and the ground breaking themes and plots in them in terms of movies and history itself. These films are brillient and in my and others opinion, they just keep getting better. I'll be real sad to see the final scene of the "Deathly Hallows" film but its been an amazing ride.
THE MOVIE SUCKED i mean come on there were chapter after chapters missing they did not need to cut over 45 min out of the film they lost a lot of importion stuff there were whole story lines missing entire characters missing what is with that?
it was terrible and i agree with everything in this article. If I didn't read the books ten times I would have no clue what was going on. They should have included the fact that harry couldnt play quidditch and he got his broom taken away by umbridge so everyone would understand why they had to ride those horse things to the ministry. And they deffinatly should have explained the prophecy a little more. And they made it look like sirius died from a spell from belatrix they never really explained that he fell through that curtain thing and what it was. And when fred and george left they school they never said that they were leaving for good it just showed them setting off fire works and causing choas and then flying away. The part with cho was never explained either. It made people think she told umbridge about the DA and thats why harry stopped talking to her, but it was her friend who told umbridge about the DA
Okay, I went into this movie knowing it might suck a little. But mind you, there wasn't any pandering to the books, there really hasn't been in the franchise of the Harry Potter movies. I really hope they don't make the next two because of how terrible this one was. I'm a slight fan of the books and such and to see this movie is just...aug. It felt like the entire movie was just this huge dance around Harry and Cho (who is not that great of a chara) instead of about the real thin at work, hello, Voldermort being back. There was a lot of jumping around just, whip whip whip, oh look here we are conveniently in the department of mysteries with no problem! Because you know, a Ministry is just going to have to make it easy for them to get in.
So much was cut for this lame view inside Harry's head which has never been that interesting to begin with. The guy was always kind of one-dimensional gary-sue until about the 4th-5th book. So honestly, this movie was not the best and almost makes you prefer the cut up 4th movie because at least that one tried to flow and give a sense of the books.
One last note, house elves. I wonder why they've been getting cut since the 2nd movie. Are they too expensive to form? Can't be more expensive than the crappy flying sequence over London. Oh! We expel you for using magic in front of a muggle but its perfectly fine to fly around in front of them, swooping and having fun. Ya! Anyway, thats just my view...but it really did suck as a whole. The acting seemed forced at times, lines delivered hard, just...times it was like watching elementary kids acting instead of full fledged adult actors. So if you can, try and get your money back. I know I did...course that was also because the screen spliced in half during the movie. -.-
The movie's special effects were awesome. Give it up for Daniels awesome appearance on big screen. 5 Stars. Emma Watson awesome 5 stars. Ron 5 stars. Best film
I am dissapointed and angry with this movie. Did the director even READ the book? It seems as if he just decided to change whatever the hell he wanted with no regard to all the previous movies. Like sirius's head floating cheesily out of the flames rather than in the embers. The worst parts of the movie was that he added tons of new stuff that wasn't in the book and forgot to mention important plot points. Kreacher made no difference to the movie plot whatsoever, they just decided to throw him out just for kicks. The department of mystery scene excluded all the other rooms, meaning that audiences who never read the book didn't know what the hell the death room was. Sirius's death scene made most of the audience laugh and was pathetic. The flying sequence over London was stupid, anyone who read the book (Or anyone with common sense) would know that wizards wouldn't fly on broomsticks right next to cruise liners in plain sight. The plot was very loose and focused on irrelevant characters like Luna lovegood, there was like fifty scenes in the movie about her. The characters jumped from scene to scene, getting to places in an instant and the acting was poorly directed; giving the movie a very choppy and rough draft feel to it. The fight scene at the end with voldemort and dumbledore was stupid, the whole lightning thing only happened when the wands are made of the same material and the spell priori incantatem happened. The director probably wasted tons of money on the stupid cgi fight (even though in the book the fight was much simpler, with statues rushing to block the curses) at the end when he could have used it to make the movie better. Now i know what you're all thinking; "but its impossible to film and produce a movie with all the scenes lol, it would take forever, you must have the attention span of a nine year old if you didn't understand the movie rofl bbq" Well what all these smug "movie critics" and Harry potter "fans" don't understand is that its the directors JOB to make the book come to life. Its his JOB to make sure that we see an abridged version of the movie. THATS WHY WE'RE PAYING FOR THE TICKETS. To see Harry Potter's world come to life! Not some half assed movie with voldemort in a business suit in the middle of the subway(VOLDEMORT ONLY SENT VISIONS TO HARRY, not hallucinations, DURING HIS SLEEP, NOT IN BROAD DAYLIGHT). Everyone knows that its impossible to film all the parts of the book, but when the director DOES film the parts that are integral to the plot, he better damn sure stick to what actually happened and not add random crap or his "stylistic vison of Harry's world" Nobody wants to see how YOU interpret the movie DAN YATES, you should die. All you had to do was film the parts in the book that were relevent to the plot, but no, you wanted to "represent harry's mind frame" or some other crap and you ruined the movie. Good job asshat. And what happened to Voldemort's nose or the whole intro to the movie, which was dreamlike and cheesy becasue it was so bad? WTF. I HATE THIS DIRECTOR, HE IS RUINING THE SERIES. ANYONE WHO SAYS THIS MOVIE WAS REMOTELY GOOD IS NOT A TRUE HARRY POTTER FAN OR A GOOD MOVIE CRITIC AND IS JUST KISSING ASS TO THE "HARRY POTTER" CRAZE. This movie made no sense whatsoever and was terrible to people who read the book and those who had never read the book. The plot was terrible and briefly skirted, the director should have demanded more than lackluster performance from the actors, and stayed true to the book in the parts he filmed and decided not to blatantly ignore. This movie sucked, and the director tried to show his perspective on the "teenage wizarding world" and failed. Mostly this movie reflects the directors state of mind on how he considers teenage years to be; pathetic, dreary, and full of loneliness and pain. In other words he hasn't read the book, researched on the precedent of other movies, or remotely cared about the franchise and fans. He makes a sloppy movie about his own perspective of Harry Potter and demands millions of dollars. And he doesn't even realize that this rough draft horrible version of the film will be seen by millions around the world. Burn this trash.
I should preface this by saying I would never blindly defend a Harry Potter movie just because I'm a huge fan of the series. I've criticized the films in the past because I feel they abridge the story and character development way to much. That said, I thought this movie was great. I've read the book many times and yes, I could sit here and nitpick about all of the stuff that was changed or left out but to be honest, I thought this movie was the best adaptation of an HP book so far. They cut out all of the drawn out stuff and got right to business. There weren't any slow parts (which can not be said about the book) and the most important story points were left in.
Sure, it would've been cool to see more of the OWL testing, St Mungo's, and the the quidditch but did the movie really need it? No.
I loved how the condensed the DA meetings and Umbridge's reign at Hogwarts. I liked that they took some time for Luna because I think she's a great character and added a lot of charm to this movie. She helped soften things up at all the right moments.
Sirius' death was abrupt, sure but that was the way it happened in the book as well. We never got a real explanation.
Josh, you described the movie as depressing. To be honest, that's not Yates' fault - that's the book. OotP is a tough one to get through because it really is the darkest of the series (so far). There's a lot less fun and a lot more struggle for all of the characters. The book is 700 pages of Harry mostly getting crapped on by Umbridge, the ministry, his classmates and even Dumbledore in a way (because he avoids Harry the whole year). I look at it as the connecting piece between Harry's youth and his journey into adulthood. Like adolescence, it can be pretty depressing at times but its a necessary evil.
All in all I think many fans of the series are going to like this movie. Some (like the wordy commenter above) are going to make lists of everything they didnt like or were upset that was taken out of the movie but if you can go into it accepting that a book as long as OotP will need to be cut down significantly to be adapted in a 2+ hour movie, there really is a lot to like about OotP.
I did a quick audio review of this on Film Junk, the first thing i've reviewed there in what feels like forever.
I enjoyed it. I didn't leave the theater thinking much about it, but i found it was entertaining and went by the fastest. I havent read ANY of the books, but I enjoy the films. I don't know what was missing from the book, but I will say I found it completely coherent despite what was probably a lot of cutting down to the core.
So in the end I dont know what it could have been, I just know what was there, and I liked what was there.
I have read the books 30+ times and could answer almost any question about them, Even I got lost watching this train wreck of a film. The effects and the acting were good, there were some very funny moments but there really was no story. The characters had no personality, Important characters were missing, key plot points from the books were completely overlooked, characters were added for no real reason. Who the hell is Nigel?
The made strong teachers including dumbledor look weak, there was no explanation of changes made to the story, they refered to things that were cut from the previous movies. My girlfriend was completely lost when Hagrid introduced Grawp as his brother.
It sucked so bad I can't decide which I want more my money or my time back. I give OOTP 5 steaming piles of turd out of 5.
Well I just got back from the movie, and I am seriously disappointed. Considering I have read the book several times, even a few weeks ago, just so I would be able to compare, I was extremely lost. I mean there was absolutely no transitions between scenes. One minute they are eating dinner, then a split second they are sleeping, and then in another second they are in a building we've never seen before. I mean how are people suppose to follow what is going on??? Besides that, why does it seem okay to completely switch around scenes. I mean half the stuff they acutally decided to put into the movie was completely wrong. Sure some people say its really something for the fans of the book, but it doesn't even represent the book at all! Even the movie doesn't connect with previous movies. Since when was Hagrid's house so far away?? In the last few movies, it was a few steps out the door. I was so disappointed, and surprisingly bored, that I almost considered leaving the movie half way thru. I mean sure the book it really long, probably one of the longest, but so much was left out. Yes including most of it would have made the movie considerably longer, but that shouldn't be a problem. I mean geez, people watched a 3+ hour long Lord of the Rings movie!! I could go on forever, I just figured that after 4 other movies, the people would know what the hell they were doing!
the film toatally sucked! i felt like there was no plot at all, and i had huge expectations to the battle in the department of mysteries, but what the hell...? it is supposed to be a big battle and we are supposed to see how dangerous the seath eaters really are, but they showed what 5 minutes of harry and the gang running from them and stunning the like it was nothing to it...and i'm not evev going to start on sirius death, that was tragic, it seemed like it took harry minutes to come over it, some yelling and then he was okay again... no, not worth seeing agin! if i haden't read the book like a million times i swear i would have no clu what was going on! david yates suck! and offcourse he is going to direct the half blood prince to, bloody perfect! arg!
What did you people expect? an even more rushed film that put in a little bit of every part of the book, or a 5-6 hour movie? The books started getting EXTREMELY long, a movie is not a book, and I dont think its fair to bash based on what isnt there from the book. You're just going to have to accept the last couple films are going to be annotated versions of the books.
First off I would like to say I am a huge fan of the hary potter book series, it was the first book I actually liked and it set me on my way to being a huge reader. It might even be responcable for sending me into college for literature in the future.
This movie sucked.
No that wasn't with enouph feeling
THIS MOVIE SUCKED
That wont do it either, does anybody know how to under line your text.
by the way Inferfire puts how much this movie sucks into words better than I ever could.
Even as a fan, this movie was rushed, hard to follow, and did not even live up to the other movies. The only way I could put how disapointed I am into words is that if I was not so angry, I would be balling my eyes out. I discourage anyone from experiencing the hart break I felt from that movie. They rushed through everything jumped from scene to scene, showed the hary and cho scene wich wasn't sapposed to be scene because it wasn't in the book. The scenes they did show weren't acurate to the book, I mean they totally distroyed it.
And you know what, I realize that they cannot always make it like the book. That the book is so long that there's no way they could fit it all in. But it didn't even live up to the other movies.
Basicaly, they abandoned the whole structure of the movie for one, fight scene in the last twenty minuts, that wasn't all that spactacular to begin with.
I must be living in a parrelel universe if people are saying tha tthis movie was hard to follow, and that Transformers was anything but a steaming pile of shit.
i wish they would remake the film at least on dvd add in the stuff they took out i know they have the extra --- hahaha--- they cut over 45 min out so if the reworked it but hey that would mean they would have to liseten to us THE FANS WHO PAY THERE PAY CHECKS IN THE END
If you have read the books see the movie twice.
Once so you can twitch and turn and think "how could they leave out...(fill in the hundreds of blanks)! I also wondered if the director actually read the book or if JK had read the screen play.
The second time, after the angst is abated, you'll be able to enjoy it for what it is. And it is a fantastic film with the best Harry Performance (he was just as irritating and irrational in the book) and great effects, a funny Filch, an understated and very well done Luna, and creepiest non-tom riddle villian so far.
Criticize for what it is not but give its due for what it is. 4 Stars!
i'm a hardcore harry potter fan, yadayada, all that crap everyone else mentioned.
i noticed everything that wasn't included, such as how it was cho's friend that told, not her, as well as the significance of kreacher towards luring sirus to the ministry and many other things. however, i understand how some things have to be cut.
i was quite confused by nigel as well, and to the person who said he gave ron his dressrobes for the yule ball or whatever, i don't think that makes him significant enough to have the role he did in this movie. colin creevey, or his little brother dennis, maybe. they at least were frequently mentioned characters, and better understood. nigel was beyond random, and was obviously just a quick addition to add some amusement and a few cute scenes to the film.
i also hated how ron and hermione flirted and exchanged glances all the time, when IN THIS BOOK THEY'RE MEANT TO BE FIGHTING CONSTANTLY. that really pissed me off. also, how ginny kept staring at harry whenat this point she's meant to have a boyfriend and her affections aren't supposed to have started yet, or at least not been shown. these things wouldn't affect length, and would have helped stay true to the storyline.
ALL THAT SAID,
i quite liked the movie.
it can't be perfect, and the books are undoubtably better.
but i wasn't sobbing for my money back or dying to leave.
i watched it through, and quite enjoyed it.
maybe being an avid book reader, i was okay because i understood every section and those that weren't didn't find this the case, as several of my friends who don't read the books didn't enjoy it at all.
but the main target audience will always be the readers, not the lazy people who are mildly interested and have come to enjoy a random summer film.
Ok I'm not like most of you that thought the movie was disapointing maybe it is because i haven't read the book yet. But on that note grant you i know they might have miss some stuff which was in more detail in the book. But i thought the movie was awsome.I didn't like the fact that sirius died call me a sap but i even cryed when he died for Harry just had found that he did have family that understood him then he was taken away from Harry.I know he still has the rest but it's not the same. I know that in the last book Harry or the dark lord will have to died if not both I'm not looking forward for that I had hope that after all the terrible life harry has had that he would end up with some happinest in his life.
But i loved the movie and i have seen it twice so far and before it leaves the movie i will probably will see it again.Way to go Harry!
i like the movie but it's disappointing at the same time... there are many scenes that has been cut and worse was they made a lot of changes... Order of the Phoenix was a great story enough that they shouldn't made many changes on it... my boyfriend who read the book many times expected to see what he supposed to see on the movie but it turned out a mess to him... haaayyysss.... quite disappointing ayt?
I think you people are nitpicking way too much. Did you really expect the movie to be exactly like the book? The important thing is that the major story points are touched on and I think they did that with this movie. Who cares if that Nigel kid replaced the Creeveys in the movie. Does it really matter?
The movies will never come anywhere near the books. There is just way too much for them to cram all of it into a film and expect it to be easy to follow. I think this movie came the closest to actually recognizing the story that needed to be told.
Things had to be cut out. Substitutions had to be made. Thats just the way it goes. Try and look past that and you will realize that the things that were changed were inconsequential compared to what was left in and done well. Order of the Phoenix has turned out to be the best of the movies.
Harry Potter books are not that hard to understand, however, you may need to think when you read them.
People who have not read them should not expect film makers to be able to fit in every single detail into a 2 hour movie. I know that most Harry Potter fans would be willing to sit through a 4 hour movie if every detail was added into it, but sadly, most people have short attention spans.
It would be appreciated if movie critcs would not complain about a plot they know nothing about if the have not taken the energy to understand it.
oh and by the way, i thought all the actors have improved. filch was awesome. the lady who plays umbridge was superb. alan rickman as snape, maggie smith as mcgonagal, gary whatever as sirius. ralph fineis or however u spell it as lord voldemort. absolutely fabulous older cast.
the younger cast is also good. radcliffe has really expanded his abilities. grint has definitely improved on making things look natural. watson in particular has improved, though the scene where she says something like "and if umbridge refuses to teach us herself..." as she looks into the fire is downright painful to watch, its so fake.
BUT- most of all, my FAVORITE actor in the entire movie is definitely evanna lych as Luna Lovegood. OH MY GOD (yes i did actually just spell it out) she has EXACTLY the same manerism as i imagined luna to have ( though evanna is a lot prettier than i imagined luna) and her voice fits the part PERFECTLY!!!
P.S.- my fav part of the movie is the montage or whatever u call it, the montage about the DA with the superb, yet not overpoweringly-John-Williams-ish music and all of the added Filch parts!!!
gus, i dont thing any of us hoped that the movie would be exactly like the book. we all knew that certaing scenes had to be cut. however, i have to say that the movie was not very good because hello, there where no transititions. no explanations. like, when the members of the da go to the ministry, absolutely no explanation of how they get the thestrals. no explanation as to how they knew which direction to go. when they actually get there, in one shot, u see them flying, and in the next, them running down the atrium inside. they could have at least shown them getting out of the telephone booth.
those were just some examples of the minor thing that bugged me.
STUFF THAT REALLY TICKED ME OFF:
THE TALK WITH DUMBLEDORE; way too short, gave absolutely no explanation at all!!!!!!!! that scene in ootp with the whole talk with dumbledore is one of the most important, influential, and imformative scenes in the entire series, and yet they barely included it!!!!
THE PROPHECY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as all harry potter fans know, harry potter would have never had all these experiences if it werent for the prophecy; that prophecy is possibly the single most important object (or would u call it an idea?) the entire series. and yet, in the movie, THEY FAIL TO INCLUDE THE ENTIRE PROPHECY!!!!! WTF
thank you for your time, gus. (sarcasm on this last line)
Seems I watched a completly different film to some here.....
I really enjoyed the film and felt that stuff that was left out was not essential to the plot line..it such a large book that it needs to be condensed only to the things that are key to the plot line...yes some things were changed as some things work better in a book than on the screen. The one thing i like about the harry potter films is the fact JKrowling is always very involved in changes they do as she doesnt want the underlaying and important themes to be changed. I didn't find the scence cuts confusing....it is often left for your imagintion and intellegence to work out the bits inbtween...like most films. You will remebr from earlier books there is a reason why they cant fly on brooms....and they flew on the horse creatures as luna was friends with them. Also the reason why Ron and hermione are glancing at each ther is because in the book they are getting feeling for each oither...which is why they fight...the directers can show there feelings but a glace is quicker to show that lots of arguments.....as the Ron and hermione thing is a side plot and not key to the story in the film
The directers do rely on you remembering details from previous films as this is part of a series. They struggle enough to fit content into 2+hours that they dont really have time to explain every detail. Id advise the people who say it suked to actually reread all the ahrry potter books 1-5 and watch all previous films again..the rewatch this film.
The special effects were great, some great acting and a directer who did well to potray the very darkness of the film but still allowing a little humour to come through. A great entertaining film!
I agree with the review the movie is a dissapointing mess of a good book. The acting is ok but the film is terrible. Lets hope david yates & matt goldenberg dont get to do the final 2 films.
well, i thought the book was way better than the movie... i was soo excited to see.. once i saw the beggining i knew it was gonna be lozy.. but at the same time i was good. i think they cou;d've done better.
but i can't wait for the next movie.
Ok, where to begin - Love the books, but this film was huge dissappointment. I took my mum (laugh it up) and she was lost completely as she hasn't read them. I struggled to begin with - the first 15 mins of acting was shocking!!
Scenes had no meat to them, plot was all over the place. Kreacher was a waste of time, confused about why they felt the need to have Cho informing Umbridge (but forgave them later).
And that fight scene with Dumbledore and Voldemort was shocking. In the books, it's graceful, each casting spells, altering them and in a way feeling similar to a sword-fight - The fight scene shown had nothing to the glamour it had in the book!
Bonus - Its the 5th film!! Umbridge was unbelievable!! Best acting in the film imo!! the storyline progressed.
okay seriously you cant include everything in the film. and it was still enjoyable, if you want to bicker that everything should be included the movie would be over 5 hours long. JK Rowling herself said she loved it, and it is her book so if she likes it who are we to differ. As well the third movie cut out a lot of parts and changed the sequence of events. And when you look at any movie that was once a book there a tons of things changed.
I liked the movie cause I know from watching other films you cant expect everything in the film, what you want in it isnt what always is in it. And honestly you cant blame the director he didnt make the script someone else did and JK Rowling had to approve it. As well the little things were amazing, like the looks Ginny gave when Harry is with Cho. And to those comments that the film centered on Harry, the whole series of books centers on Harry, with little side stories of Ron and Hermoine.
I completely agree about the movies; they leave sense at the door to please HP book fans. There are unexplainable things, but the books shouldn't be at fault. A film should be able to transfer a book and still make sense.
For example
In the movie, they have to fly on thestrals for no reason. (instead of brooms) In the book, Harry has him broom locked up b/c of a quidditch ban from Umbridge (for fighting Malfoy at the last match), and the rest of the crew doesn't have any brooms.
Secondly, and this drives me crazy, HRH go into the fire, get dragged out, and Neville, Luna, and Ginny randomly come in caught with no explanation of the fact that they were supposed to be keeping watch. They're just there.
oh please! to all the people who keep saying that such a long book would have made a 5-6 hours long film.
we are upset about a million things apart from what got cut off. its the lousiest cut and paste job ever by the way.
I am more upset about the scenes that finally did make it.
A shreiking, scared near nervous breakdown reaction has been altered to some calm clipped sentence taking more time than the original one which lent the right amount of weightage and credibility to the event. Where is teh question of time in this?
For example, uncle vernon on lesser occasions has been spitting fire and here he says some lukewarm shit when finally dudleydums is 'attacked ' by harry!! In teh book you get the moment of crisis so well as vernon hollers and howls and so does petunia. It would have taken teh same time if you cut vernons hisses and replace them with the adequate fury required. This way all yates has done is to kill the crises, kill the suspense, the drama that was the throbbing, pulsating rythm of the story of OOTP.
c'mon yates..are you trying to like add your own brand of sophistication on some crude village drama?
As harry potter readers and as movie goers(!!) both we are damn pissed. I mean c'mon. Even if you look at it purely as a film it was terrible. totally bland, missing connections, missing emotion when you had every tool in hand. YOu bloody doing it for the richest guys in teh business- the warner bros. SO whats yuor excuse? YOu trying to save some money?
There were no highs, no reactions, it was just some trite nonsense. It was like taking the book, picking out easy to do sequences, stamping it with the harry potter franchise seal and dishing it out to unsuspecting people.
And the worst part is that they earned money, loads of it coz riding on the HP wave everybody goes for a first look. love it hate it, we all went to watch it and that sent the cash register ringing for 'em guys.
Its not fair to do this to one of the best HP books! I am so sure he f@#$*&% didnt read the book. Damn it i know he didnt. Not as a reader and thats what you got to do if you are making a film from a book. YOu got to READ it. You got to think what got the reader hooked. What made it special for the READER.
What the F#$% was Yates trying to do???! out do Jo rolling? Why the F*&^ should we then buy her books and read em a million times over if we have this genius come piss over the whole thing and charge us money to see it??
And rolling deciding to go along with this crap adaptation of the book is just too painful fpr me to delve in to right now. I would never allow anyone to butcher a story like this if it reflecetd on my intellectual abilities.. but then i guess i dont know the whole story or her exact position on this.
I liked this film, and so does J.K Rowling. Jo made it specific in her contract with warnerborthers that she has to have the final word on the script in order for the rest of the films make sense and the continuity is kept intact. If this is what she left for the filmakers to make then so be it I have no complaints. In all this film did feel more scentered around Harry, which is easy to understand why, but it did need some inbetween areas, bridges so as to have a break from the usual pace of the film. I wouldnt have minded seeing them going through the stages of cleaning grimauld place and emphasize more the danger and incredulous situation of harry's expulsion which reflects the position and corruption that is taking place within the ministry of magic. This scene could also incorporate Kreacher and up his importance which will be more prominate in the upcoming films. ALso I wouldnt have minded to have seen more of the comraderie that is present during the hogsmeade weekends, like harry's date with CHo. This scene alone would serve as that junction and break within the movie for some much needed light heartedness that can be compared with the presence of the Yule Ball in the goblet of fire.
With one last thought in mind, If they went to the trouble of introducing Kreacher to the movie they should have had thats scene where Kreacher lies to Harry about Sirius being captured.
In all I was satisfied with the movie and have seen it three times.
Too all who did not like it is a movie based on a 800 page book. Even J.K Rowling admited to have wanted to edit and condense the 5th book . So dont take it to heart and cry bloody murder for not having it the way you wanted, because the majority who I have talked to never read the books but loved this movie the most out of the others.
I just wonder how they’re going to recover from the missing information in the seventh movie. For example Mundungus Fletcher if I recall was not in this movie. He was the one responsible for watching Harry at the beginning of OOTP. He’s important to the plot in the seventh movie because it was his cowardice that got mad eye moody killed I wonder what’s going to happen with that. And they left out the part about the mirror Sirius gave to Harry which leads them to be saved out of the Malfoy dungeon by Dobby… I know they cant put everything into the movie but these parts are important to the rest of the series and just to put in whatever they feel like just ruins the entire thing.
I WANT TO BEGIN WITH WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU GUYS!!!!
i agree with some here you cant expect the director to put every last page in the book to
a movie, the movie was a success yes maybe the movie will leave you wanting more
but wth the directors tried to fit everything they could call relevant. I read the 5th book let me tell you
the whole book was great from beginning to end it was a master piece, with that been said i came to the premire
that day with my friends, expecting the same master piece i read in the book to be all in the movie ''all'' i mean all.
this is because the directors could not take anything of because everything was perfect i thought it will be a replica of the book i watched the movie and i was a bit upset because i expected the movie to have all the sceanes but later
i asked my self wait but everything relevant was there maybe the directors thought that with that it will be enough. i am
satasfied with this movie cause of that but if you think back to the movie all the great scenes of the book are there.
You have to remember the books are getting darker with that darknest comming is making the movies more mature and definely more moody. people were very angry because these scenes are missing:1st the quidditch match were harry fights malfoy and cause of this an effect comes to place, his broom gets confiscated. is this neccesary i mean cmon we have had way too many fights with malfoy in the potter films whats the diffrence now and we have seen quidditch way too much cmon,we all know that umbridge is an evil evil witch that needs to be thought a lesson thats what the whole quidditch thing was about, prooving who malfoy really is and how umbridge is evil.i heard some people say how kids are flerting in this movies and how it those not go with the plot of this movie,SO WHAT!!!!! this shows they are growing up and they are getting very mature. One last thing jk rowling those not have a say between what the script of the movie is going to be, she lends them a book to the director,he reads it, takes all the crap out gets all the juice thats all jk can only watch how they make it and tell them if it fits with her books, the end she has to respect the directors choices.in my opinion every movie has been better than the next two thums up hp order of the phoenix.
Well this movie had its mistakes and its great moments.I want to say it was a bit shorter than what i expected
and i am super furius they didnt include the Scene at quidditch there was a important scene there harry gets banned
from playing anymore quidditch also they forgot to mention that Ron is now a part of the quidditch team and that harry
looses his broom well actually it gets confiscated, but if they would have put this scene people will understand why they
had to ride on those horses with wings in methology they will be pegasus.also i want to tell why they flew with the brooms at the begining it is probably the same thing as the Nightbus in hp3 and remember how they go thrue platform 3/4 they are right infront of all those people and they dont notice at all maybe is the same when they fly at NIGHT!!!! AND THEY FLY FAST in this movie. The reason why i just said that, was beacause i have been hearing people say why those he get to fly on a broom over london when he gets expelled from school for using magic .maybe the explanation i wrote before will help you understand. Moving on i must say wow!! those fights at the end of the movie way cool cmon death eaters vs D.A/and the order of the phoenix wow i liked the ninja wand fighting style pretty cool huh.oh but how can i forget
the best for last Dumbledore vs voldemort wow just like i imagined well...maybe even better.well last but not least i must say harry great job on using the cruciatus curse on bellatrix lol the ***** deserverd it hahahah.Oh and what ever happen to dobby the house elf he was suppose to appear in this fifth movie he is going to play a major role in the deathly hollows movie . they should have at least mentioned him in this movie cmon is going to be pretty weird seing dobby helping harry in the last movie when they havent talked since the 2nd movie cmon. Besides dobby has to grow as a character, during the books harry talks to dobby as a free elf he also works at cleaning hogwarts room of requirements aka D.A hide out.they should have at least shown him four a couple of minutes in the movie.
I thought it was a very well directed movie. There were lots of things that I was excited they put in. I was a little disapointed that there wasn't Quidditch but hey Half-Blood Prince they must put it in that movie. And the mirror that Sirius was supposed to give Harry, I was a little disapointed in that too, but they could put that in the 6th movie. And Ron and Hermione being prefects wasn't in there, but again 6th movie. The little things they didn't put in too, like in the fighting scenes, I think were ok not to put in but I wished I could've seen Harry tell off Malfoy.
First of all, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan = fan of the books. The first four movies were decent, not fantastic though, as they stuck to the books rather closely, and only left stuff out here and there because a movie can't last five hours.
But after coming out of the movie theatre after seein order of the phoenix, I felt angry, disappointed and insulted as a HP fan.
Everyone with a positive opinion on this movie is wrong. Normally I'd like an open discussion, but in this case the movie is just a massacred version of the book. The main reason for it being a piece of trash is the script. I would really like to write the script for half-blood prince myself, to save that movie at least.
The script cuts many chapters, which is fine: you can't have too long movies. No comment on that. But the script ADDS so much it has to leave out more of the real book. I honestly don't get why there was need to change (and mutilate) the story. All the additions and changes that made the movie untruthful to the book are the reason it sucked. Normally I'm never this straightforward but David Yates should be taken off the HP series.
Of course the movie fans will say: "Great special effects! Great sound! Great acting!" I agree completely with the first two, except the acting. The adults are mostly OK (Snape's performance is the best) but the teenagers...... It's like they're rehearsing a drama exam and have to look at each other to remember their lines. When they're not speaking they mostly just stand about, looking at the speaker, out of character .... Or perhaps they just didn't have time to do more cuts as that would cost too much, making the movie a lesser profit.
And let's all remember: good sound and special effects by itself don't qualify for a good movie. Add a good story (= the book itself, no changes, but perhaps many cuts) and you've got a blockbuster. Good example : The Matrix (the first one of course!)
There I think I made my point. I really hope Peter Jackson will read the Harry Potter series and make seven films of four hours each.
Those who are disappointed in the film might as well get over any dreams they have of Peter Jackson taking over HP, because it ain't gonna happen. Rowling is perfectly happy with the series and she has every reason to be. She's certainly not going to give movie rights over to anyone else and I wouldn't want her to. If the author's happy with the product, that's it.
Let me tell you something I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and I love the first four movies I really enjoyed this one since I saw it at midnight with my buds I love every moment of it except for the scary parts. I love the battle and I love how Dan, Emma, and Rupert has really come along as the three main characters and I even loved Luna Lovegood, she was just plain freaking awesome.
These books, if you haven't noticed are called Harry Potter and the (fill in the blank). They follow his life and his thoughts. So why in the H*** would the movie focus on anyone else. DUH!!! It has got to be hard enough to condence a 766 page UK adult version and a 870 page USA version down to 2 hours and 18 minutes, and that's not to mention they have to portray his thoughts on screen, because unlike the books, we are not in Harry's head during the movie.
That said, I loved the movie. It is my favorite, but PoA is my second favorite and a lot of people think I am weird for that. I think the screenwriter and the director did a great job of trying to fit the main plots in. For every plot line they try to squeeze in they have to give background on that plot. Which adds time. If they add this plot line then this other plot line that they left out needs now, to be included because they intertwine. Which may push the movie to 4 hours. So they have to tweak the original plot to make up for the lost plot line.
The three things that bothered me about the movie are items that would have only required minor tweaking. For example the reason why Harry is angry with Ron and Hermione. All that would have taken is a scene with Hedwig and Harry telling Hedwig not to come back without long replies and saying that he is sick of no news. The second one is the the Christmas holidays where Harry is distancing himself from the others. I thought this was one of the best parts of the book. Especially showing Ginny talking about being possessed. But this is not crucial to the plot, so I will live with this. The third item is with Dumbledore explaing the Prophecy. This could have been eisily remidied by Harry not hearing it in the DoM and Lucius still breaking the Prophecy. And they could have still had the Dumbledore-Harry talk and that would have only added a few minutes.
But, even with all the haters out there the movie as of today(10-21-2007) has grossed over $936.33 Million dollars becoming the number six(6) all-time worldwide movie.
Not to mention Dan, Emma, and Rupert were fantastic. Dan especially has come in to his own. And Emma is just plain hot!
You are so very very right. My friends thought I was being annoying and overreacting when i complained about the movie, using similar complaints as yours. We need more people like you to critique the reality of this movie. It was a dissapointment to me because it did not follow the book's plot, making things up on the way and leaving out very important things. and it was very poorly made as well. The book was amazing and they could've done a much better job at making a movie based on it. And it indeed was a shame because they had very talented actors and they werent used to the best of their ability.
This movie just doesn't compare to the other movies. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix just wasn't epic like the others.
Hopefully, people will take this to account and find another actor for the sixth and seventh movie.
1: They missed PLENTY of key points in this movie. I've seen numerous idiots posts, stating that the key points from the books were shown.....hang yourself for being so moronic.
2: If they left out the dumb shit that made no contribution (that they made up themselves), there would have been plenty of time left to fit in the main points (hell...even the main plot would have been nice).
3: Where the hell was Lily in Snape's memory scene?
4: Some of these "minor: things that are left out are ESSENTIAL backstory for important scenes in the next 2 films. Which basically means either people will be very confused when that time comes, or more likely, more things will be left out.
5: As a film student, I have learned a lot about contracts and movie rights. JKR has no rights to the movies. She gave up those rights as soon as she signed that contract (and she did). Also, she is not aloud to publicly complain about her work being ripped apart. It's all part of the normal deal authors get when their books become film.

That's a real shame. I'll still be watching it, but I was expecting it to be so much more.
