Pirates of the Caribbean returns to theaters for more summer swashbuckling, only they may have forgotten to buckle their swash. The sequel is subtitled Dead Man’s Chest, and pits the incomparable Captain Jack Sparrow against the owner of that chest, Davy Jones. You may remember him from his locker, and as a founding member of The Monkees.
Unlike his modern pop-culture counterpart this fishy Davy Jones is a decent musician, and he rolls across the Earth’s oceans in a ghostly galleon capturing souls and playing a mean pipe organ. In the last movie Captain Jack got his beloved ship the Black Pearl back, but now he may have to give her up. Davy Jones and his crustacean encrusted crew of the damned are out to get him. Jack owes Davy a debt, having promised him his soul in exchange for the captaincy of a certain black-sailed pirate ship.
The centerpiece of a successful Pirates movie must be Johnny Depp, and he’s back doing his drunken, rock and roll pirate thing. Jack is actually less interesting this time around. He’s not doing anything new, simply repeating the performance we’ve seen already. Well not exactly. He’s less of a scoundrel, probably because he’s too busy flailing his arms around and running to get down to good old-fashioned skullduggery. That’s the story for most of the movie, beloved characters from Curse of the Black Pearl running around being chased, trampled, and rolled down hills. Where the last movie had piracy, fencing, gun battles, and drunken singing; Dead Man’s Chest has CGI beasties and lots of screaming.
The film feels forced, as director Gore Verbinski struggles mightily to up the ante for his sequel, only to miss out on a lot of what made the original so fun in the first place. I’m not sure Verbinski quite gets it. All we want is hefty dose of swinging swordplay and a lot of Jack Sparrow. Where’s the sword fighting? The pillaging? Drunken romps with hideous women? Curse of the Black Pearl did an excellent job of balancing the supernatural with the film’s simpler pleasures of pirates just being pirates. When CGI was used to show off some creepy ghoul it was done beautifully, almost as an aside to the story rather than as a centerpiece. Here the oversized effects are the focus with the film’s now less interesting characters left with no choice but to jostle for space around them. Is this a pirate movie or are we watching a sea voyaging remake of Ghostbusters?
Though the movie falls a little too in love with its big effects budget, at least the effects are rather good. Davy Jones in particular is a masterfully realized featured creature. Half-squid, half man, he oozes and wheezes across the deck of his ship the Flying Dutchman with an air of inevitability. Jones hasn’t the screen presence of Geoffrey Rush’s iconic Captain Barbosa from the first film, but Bill Nighy does a remarkable job buried under thick, viscous layers of CGI.
Despite its flaws a lot of people are probably really going to enjoy Dead Man's Chest, and for those who don't the good news here is that they’ve got another movie to get it right. This is the first of two Pirates movies filmed simultaneously, and like so many other trilogy tweeners Dead Man’s Chest is more of a setup than a complete movie. Even as a sort of hum-drum, overlong tweener this second one isn’t a total waste. Most of the best moments are references back to the last movie, but Captain Jack has one or two familiarly brilliant spasms mixed in with his excessive running and the rest of the cast seems poised to do something big in the next sequel. They just don’t do it in this one. Pirates 2 isn’t bad enough to be disappointment even if it doesn’t live up to the fun of its predecessor. I still have high hopes for the third one and if Verbinski figures things out in the editing room, then Dead Man’s Chest will likely end up being remembered as something akin to Back to the Future II.

It was nowhere near as good as the first and is more of a lead-up to the third movie. I was dissapointed to see Elizabeth cheat on Will, wasn't cool, and it was made worse by the fact that she was doing it to chain Jack to the Pearl and leave him to die, heroic. The heart ended up with that horrible captain/lord dude and Jack was swallowed by a huge creature and taken to the end of the earth, and beyond. The only thing I liked about the ending was Barbossa returning. I hope that the 3rd movie regains the quality of the first and is good enough to make us forget the dissapointment of this dispiriting sequel.
Definately not a complete movie. Keira Knightley is still way hot though.
How did that dude get the heart anyway? And why did those guys want it? Why isn't Barbosa dead? Why is the monkey undead? How did Jack end up chief cannibal? Are they gonna burn the dog now 'cuz that would suck? And why did it have to be so long?
***SPOILERS)****Alan if u actually WATCHED the movie....then you would have known.....the "DUDE"....got the heart b/c he saw it in the bottle of dirt, when they were tryin to get off the island that they found the chest on....Barbosa not being dead will be explained in the 3rd movie.....the monkey is undead....BECAUSE IF U WATCH THE END CREDITS at the end of the first movie.....you will see the monkey steal a coin from the chest of cursed gold....hence making him undead.....Jack was chief b/c the natives on that island thought he was a god...(if u listened you may have caught that line)......who cares about the dog....and the movie was just as long as the first one.....k I'm done ranting
Dude, did you even watch the first movie? The monkey stole one of the coins at the very end of the first Pirates, and therefore remains undead. What dude got the heart? The heart belongs to Davy Jones, which he tore out himself and buried because of the woman he loved. Everyone wants it because he who has the heart controls Davy Jones, and all the pirates in the sea. My guess is the Barbosa thing will be explained in the next movie. The movie could not be complete because they have to leave it open for the third one. I will admit that I wished they would have explained why Jack was chosen the chief, but other than that, it was a good movie.
hello? did u not listen? the "dude" who got the heart was norington the ex commodore. and if you had listened you would have realized that they did explain why the tribe picked jack to be their chief. it was because they thought he was a god. what i dont get is why jack didnt start screamin at elizabeth to let him go. why didnt he get all pissed off? it looked like he was kinda happy to be chained up. i think u guys have it all wrong when u say that POTC was bad. i think it was better than the first one.
Katrina --- Jack smiled not from being HAPPY to be chained and left behind, but because he saw the pirate in her when she did it, and liked it. she even said "I'm not sorry." ....And jack replied; "No, you're a pirate."
I miss the last movie, and agree with the entire review almost exactly. Me and my brother were JUST saying the same thing when we got out of the show a few hours ago.
This one was less plotting and pirating; more action and special effects. In the first one....everything was so well done. This one seemed forced and sort of thrown together in places. It was funny still, sure enough;and the graphics WERE amazing, but it lacked that.........surreal and erie sort of nature a PIRATE movie should have, and that the first one had. I miss it. I really, really hope the last one makes up for Dead Man's Chest. It DOES seem like it's just setting up for the next one, a lot like some of the Star Wars movies....but..... I'm worried. I want LESS stunt doubles and special effects, and MORE eerie pauses and unexpected, deliberate and well-fitted plots and turns. I want there to be a real climax, and I want Sparrow to be interesting again.
I want that creepy mucis to MEAN something! The second one didn't deserve the music of the first. It didn't fit. Nothing did. Hopefully the next one will bring it together!
You mean at the end Katrina? He was distracted by the kiss apparantly. I kinda figured that Jack was too arrogant for his own good and thought that he could escape anyway, even when Elizabeth chained him (I thought he'd escape myself. He's been good at doing those sort of things lol). That's y he let her.
ok let me try to explain
1 the guy who got the heart was the leader of the East India trading company
2 The heart controls the Cracken, wich the trading company guy will use to kill all remaining pirates
3 The Voodoo lady was Davy Jones love (when Jack is stealing her stuff she has a heart pendant that is the same as Davy Jones music box)
4 The monkey stole a coin at the end of the first movie and is now undead
Just finished seeing the movie, it was great. Not as memorable as the first, but the way I see it the first one was so unexpected when it came out, for this one you already knew what to expect. And btw, I hate endings like that, its so obvious tha they do it to make more money by dragging out the story.
One question, anyone stayed to the end and saw whatever was shown AFTER the credits? Because I did not and want to know what it is. Thanks.
I loved the movie the effects were awesome. but whats going on with elizabeth it seems shes starting to fall for jack instead of will, she did kiss jack for quite awhile and I dont think it was just to cuff him to the boat. I know she wants to be a pirate but then will is to. the whole barbosa thing I believe happened because barbosa must have still been alive after getting shot and he knew the only way to live would be to crawl to the cursed gold and become immortal once again. Oh and dont get siked about the apple part because one thats sort of his trade mark and he is inside not outside in moonlight. Thats what I think though think whatever you want. Also to add theres a glimpse of the monkey in part two in undead form which gave away for me the monkey not dying every time Jack shot it.
It's great that everyone is so enthusiastically discussing the movie here, but just a little reminder folks: Not everyone who visits this review page will have already seen the movie. So if you're going to discuss spoilers, do everyone a favor and put a little SPOILER warning before your post as I've done with Stephanie's.
I loved the new movie but was /very/ disappointed with the ending. It wasn't as great as the first movie in my opinion, but I still enjoyed it a lot and it has got me thinking. But yeah, I definitly think it could be a bit better, and I'm excited to see the new movie.

I want to know how Barbosa is alive! =o My friend believes that maybe since they have to go to the "end of the world" to save Jack that maybe Barbosa dying somehow took him there as well. Who knows, just a guess.
To answer LuckyJ's question. The dog took over captain jacks place as being the God that the tribe people thought he was...meaning that the dog is probably going to be eaten. I hope not though. He is the key master and soooo adorable!!!
I thought the film was fierce, it was more humerous and i liked the fact that it wasn't trying to hide the fact that it was funny. It was really out there and the special effects were awesome. I liked the ending because i am now anticipating the third one even more. I screamed in the movie theatre when it finished. I was so shocked. Totally unexpected. I thought it was marvelous!!! *****
i read somewhere that Kiera Knightley basically begged the producers and script writers to write in a kiss between her and Jack Sparrow- because its Johnny Depp! So even though its not cool that she cheats, i think with the tension between them throughout the film it actually works really well. And it was her idea, so don't blame the people who write the scripts- not their idea!
why wasn't will upset when he saw elizabeth kissing jack? i liked the 1st one better because it was more piraty and this one was more monster gorry stuff. is jack dead? i dont understand the end of the world stuff. someone plz explain
Alright i got a couple questions too...Why didn't Jack want Will to stab Davey Jones' heart? wouldn't that kill Davey and Jack would be all set? And what happened with the Flying Dutchman? is it still floating around the seas? One last one...What was with the whole thing that Jack didn't really know what he wanted? Was there something to that? or was that just to make the plot more interesting and so they could include Elizabeth more in the story?
THanks.
Just got back from seeing it and must say it's easily the best movie of the summer, if not the best of the year so far. Tons of energy, a lot of familiar faces returned, great humor, great story... it was just overall an amazing film that was fantastic from start to finish. Can't wait for the 3rd!!
Whoah! Very good movie! I must applaud the cast, crew and whoever else made Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest what it was.
I do admit though, like the others on this page, I was kind of disappointed with the multiple storylines, and how they fixated more on the action/special effects rather than the true essence of the film. Ah well, cross your fingers they will focus more on the STORY than Elizabeth ((who was freakishly tan btw)) sword-fighting the whole time. :-
What is up with Barbosa being alive?????????! C'mon, that was like the BEST part of the first movie... when Will drops the medallion with the blood on it and Jack shoots Barbosa with that one shot. I was excited butt insanely annoyed...
Also, can someone explain the whole "game" between Will, Bill, and Davy Jones, because I was just confused. (with the dice and all!) Thanks!
Spike wrote "2 The heart controls the Cracken, wich the trading company guy will use to kill all remaining pirates"
The heart does not control the Cracken the heart is merely leaverage as is were to get Davy Jones to call off the Cracken. Jack was going to barter with Davy Jones. Davy Jones calls off the debt and the Cracken and in return Jack hands of Mr. Jones heart and key persumabeably.
Spike also wrote "The Voodoo lady was Davy Jones love (when Jack is stealing her stuff she has a heart pendant that is the same as Davy Jones music box)"
Not really a correction because he might be right. However, I personlly think that this is very speculative. The legend of Davy Jones is quite anchient and there is nothing in the movie to suggest that the Voodoo woman (I forget her name) was immoratal. Although, I don't think it's a streach to think she might be a relative of the woman Mr. Jones fell in love with.
Barbossa coming back is the best thing that could have happened. the producers must have realised that Depp (however good) needed a decent villain to play off and Davy Jones was crap.
The only reason why the 2nd movie is a Box Office Hit = success of the 1st movie. I expect the DVD sales to be far less than the original. Which is a shame because I wanted the 2nd movie to be at least comparable to the 1st.
I saw the 1st movie ten times, whereas I have no interest in seeing the 2nd movie again.
IMO, the Writer & Director could have made the 2nd movie as entertaining yet keep the subtle dark mystery intact. Instead, we have unbelievably comical/scary characters with very complex plots & subplots. Most of the funny lines from the 1st movie gets reiterated in the 2nd movie (is this creativity at work?).
BTW: 6 - 8 year old kids can watch the 1st movie and have a great time. I can guarantee that 2nd movie won't do the same.
I saw the premier the other night at the El Capitan in Hollywood where they had some of the movie props on display. One of the things was Davy Jones' chest, which was filled with love letters. You could read the letters and they were all written to someone named "Calypso." Perhaps Calypso and Tia are one and the same?
people sould have known that this movie was a sort of duplicate to lead on to the third movie.
and the whole Barbosa thing. Im guessing hes alive because his monkey Jack gave him a peice of aztec gold. Some people will know what i mean if they would go back and watch the credits to the first movie.
Do we know for sure that Elizabeth chained Jack to the Pearl? Maybe he did it himself...they don't really show who actually slaps them on and locks them...just like Captain Barbosa showing up...did you see the pair of pirate boots at the cajun woman's hut before you even saw Captain Barbosa at the end? Also, did you hear the bark of the dog at the end of this second installment before they show him with the cannibals and holding the bone? I heard it....very faintly...that is why I guessed what was at the end....most of the theatre got up and walked out before all of the credits were done...just like they did in the first movie...luckily, I am the kind of moviegoer that always watches the credits at the end. I agree with the gentleman who thinks that the Calypso woman is Davy Jones love interest...we shall see, eh?

Of course it was Elizabeth that chained jack to the pearl... ARe you an idiot?... Did you not see jack try to get out of the cuffs? I saw the boots, but i dont know what bark your talking about?.. anyways.... i loved the movie..I thought it was the best. i've sene it twice already in two days and i plan on seeing it again. I thought Barbossa showing up was a great part of the movie, And it leaves it open and it just makes me more anxious to go see the 3rd movie, . I didnt even know there was going to be a third movie... Well. it should be good
I loved the movie!!! So much better than the 1st but did like the beauty of the scenery etc. in the 1st...oh well...can't hav everything u want with a new director!!! k so I actually disliked the fact that Keira kissed Johnny, firstly, because he's hott as a pirate and I'm jealous..lol...next because she really hurt Will, but of course that kind of sets the pace for Elizabeth and Will's relationship and having to fix it in the 3rd movie...I also understand that the only reason she really did it (kiss Jack) is because she knew the only way to get him chained to the ship was to seduce him...tough...but neccessary. I can't help but thinking a part of her really WANTED 2 however, but she still did it because she knew the Kracken was after Jack and having it get what it wanted would save everyone else...besides, she has to know that he's Captain Jack Sparrow, saavy???
PS-i heard there's an extra scene at the end the way there was in the 1st movie....someone SPOIL and tell me what it is!!!!??
Adele. Finally. Someone who questions that Elizabeth chained Sparrow. Until I started reading all these discussion boards tonight, I was convinced that Sparrow chained himself after seeing it twice. Thank you for the affirmation - I thought i was the only one in the world!!!!

Adele. Finally. Thanks for the affirmation I've seen the movie twice, read a bunch of discussion, and you're the first I've come across to question that Elizabeth did the chaining. After seeing it the second time, I was convinced that Jack chained himself. I'm so curious now. Will wait for DVD so I can pause/rewind/pause!!! Hopefully, more people will speak up about this - I want to be correct about this, either way. Very important to the tone of the ending & the dialogue & actions surrounding this scene.
I enjoyed the movie but do agree that it can't compare with the 1st.
I'm surprised that everyone is so upsett about elizabeth and jack, I was happy
because I always thought that they should have gotten together. I mean don't
forget they did had quite some chemistry in the first.
Its obvious that Will and elizabeth will get back together. I think that Will didn't
respond all crazy because he is too involved in his Father's matter.
I think they made this movie this way for a reason because I find it hard to believe that they would just through everything in all together without knowing what they are doing. Especially because of the massive amount of pressure from fans to live up to the expectation of the 1st. Its without a doubt a lead up to the 3rd and a tactic to keep the viewers in the dark about what to expect for the next movie. Well thats what I believe.
However I do have a question about dead mans chest. Could someone please tell me the story about Davey Jones and his story? I missed it because there were these really annoying people behind me chatting and distracting me plus I found it hard to understand that voodoo ladie.
basically.. he fell in love with a woman who broke his heart so he couldnt bear to live with it (there was some cooler phrasing used) so he cut it out and put it in a chest. and whoever has the heart controls davy jones.. so jack wants it to bargain with him to relieve his debt. but if you control davy jones you indirectly control the kraken.. so you can figure out why so many people want it.
and i dont think jack chained himself. because why would eilizabeth say the things she did? about how he had to stay behind bc it was after him. and shes not sorry. and why would he call her a pirate. that is important, that she is acting like a pirate. they switched roles here bc she was being a pirate and he was being a good man, like they had talked about earlier. and this "curiosity" is part of their chemistry, which was obvious in the kiss and the tension existing between them in both movies. her acting like a pirate is also why she smiled, as someone mentioned earlier, not that he was glad to be chained to the ship.
does anyone have any ideas about how jack will survive the kraken?? i cant wait for the third esp since barbosa will be in it!!! and what do you think happened between the new commodore and jack in the past where they "left their mark" on each other? maybe he is more twisted up in the plot than it seems now? also, does anyone know why jacks compass wont work for him?
Davey fell in love with a girl (that some speculate to be the voodoo lady), decided that love was to painful, cut out his heart, and basically sold his soul to the devil. Somehow (can someone explain how) he got control of the Craken that he uses to get more crewmembers for his ship. The Craken attacks and the sailors are brought onboard the Flying Dutchman where Davey offers to postpone death (and therefore judgement) 100 yrs if they will serve aboard his ship. I'm not sure if only the captain can only step on land once every 10 yrs or if that applies to the crew as well.
The heart thus provides the leverage that everybody wants because whomever controls the heart can have Davey do his or her bidding without question. The East India company wants it to eliminate the pirates that attack their ships. Jack wants it to destroy anyone that comes between him and his treasure (and so that his debt will not have to be settled), and Will wants to release his father from servitude onboard the Dutchman.
Jack's debt goes like this:
He made a deal with the Dutchman that if he could be captain of the Black Pearl for a certain number of years, at the end of the number of said years he would become the new captain of the Flying Dutchman (from my understanding. Correct me if I'm wrong).
As far as the game on the Dutchman, this is my best explanation: Each player has five or six dice (I'm not sure). They roll, and the first round of betting begins. After calling what is being wagered, the first person guesses how many of a number there will be. For example, someone may call 3 3's, that is, there are 3 dice with the 3 up among the number of players. The next person may call 4 4's, that is, there are 4 dice with the 4 up among the number of players. The next person may call 4 5's, that is, there are 4 dice with the 5 up among the number of players. Each person has to consider what he has and what all other players might have. Then the second round begins. Judging from what was said on the first round, each player should know something about the other players hand. For example, Will had 4 5's, which was why he called that. Davey had 3 5's, so he called 7 5's. Then Bootstrap called 12 5's, which he knew would be a wrong bet so that he would loose and his son wouldn't have to serve for eternity, but he would take the sentance in his son's stead. After the second round of betting, each player reveals his dice, and all must pay up.
Okay, this is something that me and my sis figured out: do you guys remember in the first one when Jack is talking with those two guys in the red coats about the boats and he tells them about the black pearl. The guy on the right tells the guy next to him he's seen it and then the guy next to him says, "You've seen a ship with black sails that crewed by the *darned* and captained by a man so evil that *heck* itself spat him back out?"
He was referring to Barbosa. So that's our opinion that he was ment to go to H-E- double tooth picks but he was spat back out. But, to some that may seem...well strange, whatever you think. But that's just what we think.
BTW I thought the movie was great...and if I dare say better than the first. I thought the action was better and that it was totally hilarious. And I thought Davy Jones was pure evil. And don't have anything to add to that but thought it should be known.
Thanks for the explanation of the game, Shannon! I understand now!

Oh, and just to clear up about whether JUST Davy Jones is allowed to step on land once every ten years, or his entire crew.. it's just HIM that can't step on land, because in the movie, he sends his crew out to re-capture the chest on land. Also, before his crew attempts to capture the chest, he has a conversation with them saying something like "Ugh, but I'm not allowed on land, quite yet.." or "It still hasn't been ten years.." or something to that effect. So yeah, it's just him that can't! =)
In my opinion, Gore Verbinski pulled in all the needed elements into this movie: humor, action, suspense, and a good plot. Everyone may not agree with me, and that's fine, but I thought this movie was better than the first. It involved more islands and less time Port Royal (which I found to be the semi-boring parts in the first movie). The movie had a lot of things you had to figure out and had a humungous cliff-hanger, which leaves me looking forward to the third movie.

Everyone's saying that they didn't like the fact that Elizabeth kisses Jack, but I personally liked that part. It was very unpredictable and left me wondering how they would fix up Will's and Elizabeth's relationshop and if they would ever get married. However, I didn't like the fact that the main battle scenes were with The Cracken. I would have liked to see a battle scene with Davey Jones or something. But I must say that the fighting between Jack, Will, and Norrington on the wheel and the beach was very entertaining and funny. One thing I didn't like about this movie was how un-realistic it was compared to the first. The only thing in the first movie that really far-fetched was when they showed the pirates onboard the Black Pearl in their true form at night. This movie had Davey Jone's sea creatures that were completely unrealistic. And the voodoo girl, who's name was Tia Dalma, was a new face who I enjoyed. She gave a lot of information involving the movie, but I think her first scene was a bit too long and drug out a little. But in the end, I really did like this movie.
ONE QUESTION: I didn't really understand what all those papers had to do in the chest? I don't know if they ever explained it in the movie, but could someone answer that question? Thanks.
Caroline said: "I saw the premier the other night at the El Capitan in Hollywood where they had some of the movie props on display. I dunno if this relates at all but i did some research:
Calypso was a nymph, the daughter of the Titan Atlas. She lived on the island of Ogygia. After the last of Odysseus' men had perished at sea, Odysseus himself was washed ashore on Ogygia, where Calypso became enamored of him, taking him as her lover and promising him immortality if he would stay with her. Odysseus refused her offer, wishing to return home to Ithaca and to his wife, Penelope. But Calypso refused to let him leave, and held him prisoner for seven years. Finally Athena complained of Odysseus' plight to Zeus, and Zeus sent Hermes to Ogygia to order Calypso to set Odysseus free. Calypso complied reluctantly, allowing Odysseus to construct a small boat and set sail from the island.
Comment back if you think there is any correalation between Calypso in Greek Mythology?
After seeing the movie a second time, I totally picked up on Jack stealing the locket type thing at Tia's shack. The first time I totally missed that. It really made me think that Tia was somehow connected with Davey Jones because it was the exact same pattern as on his music box and on the chest... unless, someone just gave it to her as payment for her services. The music box music was spooky.. i liked it. =)
At the end of the third movie, I think that Jack Sparrow is going to have Will and Elizabeth get married on the Black Pearl...remember when he suggested it to Elizabeth how we could have a wedding on his Pearl "right there" because she was so desperate to be married.
Also, I don't think that Tia, the voodoo lady, was Davy Jones' lover, but then again, I'm not sure.
I also don't understand why Norrington lost his position either. That part confused me.
okay everyone i think i have an answer of to why barbossa is back.If you didn't notice, in the second movie when the voodoo lady is blabbing about davy jones and jack is stealing her stuff, the voodoo lady takes a look into the corner at a pair of boots.they look like barbossa's and mabye she did some kinda voodoo on them to get him back 2 life...
Yeah, ALANNA...we figured that out too. The monkey is really excited to see him and was like that in the first movie. And yeah...they look like his boots, too. lol
Anyone who has any other ideas about this, post!!
As far as Norrington, he is just like Will and Elisabeth in that he lost his commission as he let Jack Sparrow go. Followed by loss of his ship and crew chasing Jack when they were taken down by a hurricane.
I thought the movie was pretty good, if a little too busy trying to build a bridge between one and three.
After seeing II for the third time, here's what I think is "foreshadowed" to happen in III....
If you haven’t seen the movie, beware “matie”… only enter “if ye dare”
Tia "knows" Will. While she is telling the story about Davey Jones, Will looks as if she is telling the story about him and Elizabeth!
Remember, Will “has a destiny about him”….
At the end of the movie he keep throwing his Dad’s knife into table he’s sitting at, ….. will he use it to cut out his own heart in the third movie, because it is broken also?
Upon receiving the knife from his father, the movie also makes it a point (no pun intended, … really!) to show him using it to escape both Kraken attacks.
After noticing Elizabeth’s remorse over Jack he announces he’s willing to do anything to get Jack back.
In an effort to free his father, perhaps he will become the captain of the Flying Dutchman… in Jack’s place(???), because he realizes Elizabeth loves Jack!!!??? (It was quite a kiss, and I’m sure she’s the one who chained him to the ship. She double-crossed him, their rolls reversed, she indeed became the “pirate”!)
When Jack was escaping in the long boat, and he stopped to check his compass, only then did it show him what he wanted. Tia said “maybe Jack did know what he wanted, but was unsure to claim it for his own.” Did the compass point to Elizabeth? It couldn’t have been the Black Pearl because Jack told Mr. Gibbs “It’s only a ship mate?” Also remember Jack’s reaction when Elizabeth asked him why his compass didn’t work……
(Just wondering, did that black spot return just then because Will had escaped the Flying Dutchman and the deal for 100 souls was off?)
Why would Lord Beckett (so sorry, I still see him as “Mr. Collins”, can’t take his role seriously because of this.) suggest that “fate” intervened in stopping Elizabeth’s and Will’s wedding? What would he know of Elizabeth’s obsession with pirates, or Jack? And…we were never told what mark Jack left on him!!!?? It will be interesting to learn the history between him and Jack!
Yes, I also agree, the first movie of Pirates was much better! The sword fights happened too fast in this one, you couldn’t enjoy any of it like you could it the first Pirates, except for the old church ruins scene, (that was funny) it all just happened to fast!
However, I did enjoy all the funny references to the first movie, such as: Elizabeth’s and Will’s reply “CAPTAIN, Jack Sparrow” “Why is the rum always gone?”, “Hide the rum”, and “Sea Turtles”. I also laughed again on the way home, about the “undead monkey” and how many times Jack shot him!
It is sad that it is just too scary for kids to enjoy. I didn’t understand the purpose of the asylum scenes, and think that it could have entirely been cut from the movie!!! How gross, it didn’t fit with Pirates at all!!!!! The jungle “boo-gie man” scene was funny though, it did make me jump!
Good Jen brought up something I noticed. Everyone was talking about Elizabeth and Will's relationship being mended in the third installment but I think it's going to become Jack and Elizabeth's. Everyone seems to have forgotten a few scenes/lines. Remember when the comador or whatever had just got on the ship and saw Elizabeth talking to Jack. After Jack left he said something about how he would have loved it if she would have looked at him like that back in the day. We all know Jack wants Elilzabeth, he wanted to get married to her, it wasn't really hidden. And watch the part when she chains his hands in the cuffs and after she kisses him. She almost goes in for one more kiss but stops just short. Also when they were looking for the chest on the island Elizabeth was pacing around and at one point she looked at the compass and it was pointed to Jack. Also as Jen pointed out, Elizabeth was pretty wrecked about Jack being gone. It's just a hunch but it's a pretty strong one in my opinion.
this is an answer to jens question on why the black spot came back
im not sure but i think the three days where up.anyway it couldnt have been wills escape because he gave his life time service to his father in the game
i also think most of the of questions will be answered in the third
Personally I think that Jack will not end up with Elizabeth. When Elizabeth came up to him as a man and said she was looking for her love he said "My first and only love is the sea". With the number of times Jack was slapped by women, he obviously had done things with them but then disrespected them later. Why would Elizabeth be treated differently. Jack likes women but he doesn't love them. Elizabeth may have a crush on Jack, but I think she admires the sea and pirating which causes her to admire Jack. She was probably just sick of the way her father would always over-protect her and is ready for adventure.
to be honest, I don't want Elizabeth to end up with Jack Sparrow, unless somehow they magically make it turn out all right. Jack Sparrow isn't noble enough for Elizabeth and, as Anne Marie pointed out, he doesn't have the best record with girls. Will loves Elizabeth, and I believe he loves her so much to go out and find Jack Sparrow her.
I <3 Jack Sparrow, but he's not the one for Elizabeth
Elizabeth is not going to end up with Sparrow. Everything she did was for William. She seduced Sparrow so that she could hand cuff him to the ship, because the Kracken was keyed in on Sparrow. If he had gotten in the life boat with everyone else, the Kracken would have killed everyone in the life boat. Wherever Sparrow went the Kracken was going to follow. She did what she did so that the rest of them could slip away.
Captain Barbosa is back because at the end of the first one, the monkey stole a piece of the treasure. The curse only applies to those within the room at the time the treasure was stolen. Because no one was there except Barbosa, who was already dead, the curse applied to Barbosa and the monkey. On top of this, If you do recall, the end of the movie was set at nighttime in a house, which had few windows blocking the moonlight. I think its safe to assume that Barbosa is undead, and with the monkey in Barbosas hands, he can lift the curse anytime he pleases. Maybe he will keep the curse on purposely so that he cannot die on this voyage, and perhaps he is taking this voyage only to get revenge on Jack Sparrow after finding him. Thats all, tell me what you think of that theory.
I absolutely LOVE everything Pirates of the Caribbean. I even have a necklass with a piece of Atzec gold on it that I wear always, even at work. I am probably akin to those who are into Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, and I must say, the sequel very nearly disappointed me. I am almost forcing myself to like it despite all its short-comings. The effects were marvolous, the movie was funnier than the first, and Johnny Depp is super sexy. Yes, we need more Jack Sparrow being a charming cad as he was in the first one. I did not like the way he acted in Pirates 2. He was less confident and quick to just...run away. I'd like to believe that after going through everything with Will in the first one, he would have a little bit of caring for him. Why would he just leave him to waist away on the Flying Dutchman like that? Will saved his life at the end of the first. They were friends by then. The movie makers have said that Depp is in Pirates 2 less than any of them, so that leaves hope for a better, more heroic Jack in Pirates 3. Also, I was disheartened by the very mood of the movie. It was depressing the entire way through, kind of like the Harry Potter series. There is a somber mood all throughout starting with Elizabeth being stood up on her wedding day and the whole Jack Sparrow cowardice thing. The first one made you giddy and happy to be seeing it, while the second one left you with a sense of emptiness and disappointment. I agree that the second Pirates was a 'teaser' for the third one, which is undoubtly being set up to be a big BIG deal. The third one will be the climax of the series, and I refuse to believe they will screw it up. They need to bring Jack back within the first 3 minutes of Pirates 3 or it will be boring. You cannot have a Pirate movie without a Pirate. Simple as that. I just hope they don't make him into a ghost or a fish monster, or any other unwordly undead spirit. And they better not kill him at the end of it or I will pitch a fit. I left the theater for Pirates 2 on the phone with my dad in tears "Oh my God! They killed Jack Sparrow! You bastards!" And despite what anyone else says, I liked the whole Elizabeth and Jack thing going on. They had something in the first one too, if you remember the "Yo ho" scene. Elizabeth cannot be happy as a govenor's daughter in a dress. Unfortunatly, Will's character does not intrigue me enough to care about his feelings. Let him hook up with Tia Dalma.
Dead Man's Chest was pretty good but not as good as the first one. I hope it's not going to pull a Matrix trilogy on us. What i mean by that is the first one was the best with great plot and the second was dense with lot's of action, very little plot and the third one was poorly put together. Aside from that I couldn't help point out one flaw in the movie, it's about Davy Jone's. In pirates 1 Will threatens Barbosa by saying "ON MY WORDS DO AS I SAY, OR I'LL BE LOST TO DAVY JONE'S LOCKER". Now if you watch pirates 2 and Jack asked Will about Davy Jones he says he doesn't know much.
Niru, I noticed that too, but --Davy Jones locker-- is a real idiom, used as a euphemism, an expression intended by the speaker to be less offensive, for death at sea (actually used around the mid 1700's). Most people in that era of time wouldn't really know who Davy Jones was anyway. So, its understandable that Will Turner was unfamiliar with this sea devil.
To answer Jess's questions concerning why Jack just left Will on the Flying Dutchman, and pretty much didn't care about him the entire movie....... he's Captain Jack Sparrow. He's a PIRATE. =) Of course he wasn't going to worry about Will- Jack only cares about himself, like every other pirate.
I thought the movie was pretty good, but i wanted more sword fights like in the first. I totally agree with Jess about Jack and Elizabeth's relationship. They have both shown that they can be pirates but still care in some situations. Honestly, I don't really care about the relationship between Will and Elizabeth.
I just saw DMC a few hours ago. I also enjoyed 1 much better, for many of the same reasons. I was likewise upset at the kiss. my wife agrees that Elizabeth is more of a free spirit and really has feelings for Jack and what freedom and lack of commitment he embodies. So why does she chains him up while expressing her passion?... at first I didn't think it was her who had done the cuffing, but in watching the link shown above, she moves her hands down prior to the chaining and he looks surprised and stops the kiss, I think. i like jen's insight that she became the 'pirate' in that act. And yes, why didn't Will have a stronger reaction to that??? In this drawn-out sequel, we almost forget, especially in that trio church fight between jack, will, and lost-cause Norrington; we almost forget that Will and Elizabeth are betrothed... they seem to be caught up in solving every complicated problem other than their own... "Get married already! You are together, you are not in prison as you began the 2nd story, and it hasn't even crossed your mind."
I would like to see how everything comes together in part III. It was just difficult to have so many loose ends when the movie ended, loose ends that weren't even discovered or seemingly not even a possibility in part I.
The whole control of the heart seemed to me to be a little confusing as well. It seems too simple that everyone in the movie wants the same thing (control of the heart) and that it is the answer to everyone's problems.
I also agree with the person who points out the way this sequel was too unbelievable compared to 1. I mean, to have the whole ship perish to the Craken except our main characters, and to have Jack fall thousands of feet through solid rope bridges, land on the ground, and get up like it was nothing... and the whole beach scene with Elizabeth fighting off the whole Dutchmen fish-army... a little too far-fetched this time.
Was I the only one who noticed that Elizabeth was the ex-Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport) love..and they had something before will came in the picture. Will "stole" her from him. Jack was saying how it was WILL that ruined his life and not him.. and "stole the love of his life"
And this is why he turned around and said "he's right" and started fighting Will when he already had the chance to kill Jack, (when they were on the burned down church)
There are also two specific scenes where the voodoo compass wavers towards Jack while under the influence of Elizabeth, insinuating some ulterior feelings on her part.
Jack continually asserts that he is not a good person, despite Elizabeth's insistance. Although Jack attempts to escape in the longboat, he looks at his compass and realizes that the thing he wants most in the world is not to stay alive, nor does he want the ship. The thing, or rather person, that he wants most is Elizabeth. The boat is just a boat, as Jack remarks when his first mate asks him, "What about the pearl?". Here the audience discovers that Jack is not just a pirate, but also has the ability to love, something which may assist him in the third film. His final moments can be seen as his coming to terms with all aspects of his personality, and accepting his fate as a happy man.
I did like the first film much better, but DMC isn't too bad itself. Responses: though Ty had very good idea that I don’t think he got/conveyed it clearly: the entire second movie revolves around control of SOMEONE’S heart-Will, Norrington, Liz, Jack, Jones, Tia ext. Jack in the end wants to be a good man, though he may not be happy- he accepts he cannot escape this one, and charges "into the mouth of hell" if you will(the kraken, by the way, is a much documented legend dating back to around the 12th century); also, earlier in DMC, Jack says, "there comes a time when one must take responsibility for one's mistakes," interesting.
Now, a couple of things, first off the movie seemed much matrix trilogy-ish with the end of the movie left in a huge cliffhanger, and I felt that more of the scenes should have been longer but they tried to get in more scenes than to get in-depth with many; **also, I have read(though not truly confirmed) that they shot some scenes for the third movie so the cast/crew wouldn’t need to go back to the sets/locations, though they begin filming w/o a finished script** also, apparently the gold teeth that Depp has in the film are real… his dentist put them in, though the director thought they may be too much(what do you think?). Tia is a "voodoo lady" so there are all number of ways for her to bring Barbossa back, and in my opinion, if you look back to CURSE, Barbossa though twisting the meaning + that little mutiny, actually seemed to keep his word more than jack does most of the time.
I agree that the beginning of the movie with the prison/coffin scene was a fair amount gorier than Disney seems to be, but it is a pirate movie. and as for jack saying "it's just a ship" to Gibbs, this is a dramatic change of heart, as the ENTIRE point for jack in the first movie is to get the PEARL back(and revenge + survival), even though he had the interceptor for a good time there. I do have to say I loved and cracked up with the undead monkey, best when jack gets back on the pearl and says to Gibbs "Where is that monkey, I want to shoot something." I will be royally irked if they make Jack/Liz together at the end without some extremely good/interesting turn of events that actually works. In the first movie after the maid says getting threatened by jack was terrifying, Liz agrees but her look seems that it was also very “exhilarating,” and could foreshadow her relationships/affairs with both pirates(Jack & Will)
Also, if you look up "The Kiss! Extended Version" on you tube, it is almost "inescapably clear" that Liz chains Jack up which, also, knowing Disney’s humor (one meaning for kids that can be another for adults), could be a kinky reference to, you know (and why would jack work so hard to get out of the chains if he chained himself???). Also, w/that, it is obvious through both movies that, although jack may be becoming better, he sill has a LONG history of using then discarding women at his leisure, savvy?
Ps: id you watch to the very end of curse of the black pearl, you see why the monkey is undead and all, on the DVD: fast forward through the credits to see the "additional scene" that was also in theaters, also on you tube: undead monkey
thank u all so much! i have been looking 4 info on this movie, and this has pointed out some things i would have never thought of!
so now, i have a question. around what time was Davy Jones created? cuz i think that Tia Dolma is the love that broke his heart. but how old is she? her and Jack went at it (or at least it seemed like it) so i think that she was Davy Jones luv and left him 4 Jack. but is Davy Jones to old? so yeah, relpy!
Yea, i hate how all of these people are thinking that Jack and Elizabeth are going to get together. that would make no sense whatsoever since in th first movie, Elizabeth spent more than half of it being angry at jack and only became his friend towards the end. Her and Jack have really only known eachother a year tops, and Will and Elizabeth have known eachother since they were children. i agree that their relationship is cliche, but what are you going to do, it's disney, that's their forte. i will personally be pissed if Jack and Elizabeth end up together because i feel that Will has willingly put his life in danger for her sake dozens of times. He became a fugative, put a pistol to his head, gave himself to a gang of bloodthirsty pirates, sat in the Flying Dutchman to ensure her freedom(or so he thought), etc... Jack pretty much lies to her from the beginning.
The kiss was simply to distract Jack so that she could shackle him to the Pearl and save the rest of the crew. Yes there is some undeniable tension between them, but that's typical because (a) He's dead sexy and (b) she was robbed of her wedding night so she's a little frustrated in that sense.
it is obvious that liz is the one who chains him because she would not have said "this is the only way don't you see" and "i'm not sorry" what would she have to be sorry about if she didn't do it. Jack smiles because he's finally seeing the pirate side of Liz and is proven right about his theory on her.
i was a little upset that Jack betrayed people i thought he'd befriended in the first movie, but i see his reasoning now. he did it all so he could get the heart of davy jones, notice it's not until after he's already lost it that he decides to do something to really help the others. if he got the heart of davy jones, the squid man would be his to control, meaning that Will would have been freed, and that Liz would be safe, and blah blah blah, so basically, in his strange way of working things out, he was trying to save everyone who was involved, while of course saving himself in the process.
overall i loved the movie and i don't know if i can even wait till next may, but i guess i have no choice. i hope that Jack gets a love interest(that's not Liz of course) and that the third movie will be as good as the first and second ones.
Ok so Does anybody know what are the things in the begining that jack wants most? I think jack cut his way out of the Kraken via the sword he has. Also How stupid do you have to be to say your on the ship to repay sparrows dept
i had trouble ciphering through all the info posted..so im just gonna ask away the few questions i have...
1. wen will gets back to jack n them on the island where the chest is he says jack tricked him onto the ship...as if he offered him as bait. i got the idea that he wanted will to get the key, and that saying he was there to settle jacks debt (not knowing what that meant) was only in case he got caught, so that they wuld keep him alive to crew the ship, so when jack found the chest he would come back for him cuz will wuld b kept alive and able to search for the key. although you never get the chance to find out if he still would have tried to get the chest to take will back n settle it using the heart as a bargain, because davy says he wants 99 more so jack has to set sail again. do think he really was going to leave will there on purpose if davy had accepted just will as payment?
2. wen jack boards the ship again with commodore norrington, had he given up finding the 99 people? or did he only give that up wen he found out elizabeth was there, who culd use the compass to find what she wanted...whatever wuld save will? cuz i got the idea he never found enough, and that his black spot appeared again cuz the third day was up. it seemed to me that he only went out to find the 99 in the first place cuz he thought he wuldnt get the chest n key from will fast enough, and changed his mind because elizabeth got the right direction and decided to settle it with the heart. tell me if im wrong
3. y is it that the compass wont work for jack? tia dalma says something like "jack sparrow doesnt know what he wants, or is it that he does, but is unsure to claim it for his own" does she mean elizabeth? liek that technically he cant have her so it wont point to her cuz he's not sure about if it'll work out? or is it just confusing what he wants cuz he cant decide if he wants elizabeth, or the chest, or to b a good man or something? they make it seem like elizabeth and the chest he cant decide which, cuz the chest wuld allow will to b with her n not him, and without it his soul is owed to jones. i dunno...it pointed to her on the island...and the chest at the same time...which confirms kinda that he wants both equally. probably a sexual thing, i dont c them being a real couple, just the tension and freedom of it all makes them seem attractive to eachother. it pointed back to the pearl wen he was rowing away after he realized he didnt have the heart and the kraken was attacking also, which i wasnt sure if it meant what he wanted was to save his friends, or what he wanted was elizabeth. anyway, im getting the feeling he wanted her and the chest and to be a good man the same so the compass messed it up, and only went rite wen he had already lost the heart and saw how much elizabeth still cared for will so it pointed bak to saving his friends.
4. wen norrington talks to elizabeth he aks her if she wondered how will got on the dutchman to begin with and she opens the compass n it points to jack. does that mean she opened it concentrating on that she wanted to know who put him there? or was it mere coincidence that she looked at it at that point wen he sed that and was only trying to make it point to finding will and it showed jack as what she truly wanted?
theres much more too....like how would the heart control davy or make him call off the kraken? if someone wanted to control him or he knew they planned on stabbing it once the kraken was gone wouldnt he rather he died? i dont c how the heart has much leaverage....anyways if anyone has any explanations to why jack did anything he did in this movie please let me know because i read into everything to much and i just want some straight realistic answers to what the hell went on.
yea i wanna kno bout the end credits myself???? anyway...Jenn i think made sum really great points and stuff bout the possible outcomes in the third movie and the 2nd movie's meaning...i really luv Jack and all, but i think there's not way a relationship between him and Elizabeth could ever work out, it would probably ruin the plotline for Will, even though he's kind of at a setback considering his father's kinda a half-dead slave and all....boohoo...he'll get what he wants in the third movie...and someone will die...that's all i know...
as usual Jack was hilarious!!! the undead monkey crap...lmao...so good...
i am certain that Elizabeth chained Jack...that's a no-brainer...and as for the whole Jack vs Kracken, yea he probably cut his way out...like in Men in Black or sumthin...if not maybe Barbosa's gonna take his turn, be the gentlemen and give up his life for Jack or sumthin...YEAH RIGHT....lol...i really could tell the difference between the script writing and yea it was kind of hard to follow the plot in sum ways...the great humor dumbed the movie down 4 us blondes though so...eh...w/e
it's kind of like the LOTR trilogy...in the Two Towers i noticed a lot of my friends and everyone got confused because of the twists in the plotlines...but i'm sure everything will work out in the third movie...
PS-just becasue Barbosa was eating the apple doesn't mean he's not undead again...which i personally think he is...if u don't remember in the 1st movie he drinks the bottle of wine....just because he's not "enjoying" it doesn't mean he won't inhale it 4 the heck of it...
I think that it was an excellent movie. I for one think that Barbossa is still alive because Tia Dalma brought him back to life. I also think that she might be Davy Jone's love interest because she has the same locket he does. I Think it would be interesting to see Elizabeth and Jack's relationship grow a little. Don't get me wrong, I like will, but it seems that Elizabeth has always had a thing for pirates.
I am very interested to see how Barbossa is going to treat Elizabeth in the third movie. I can't wait to see it. You just have to be open to change if it happens.
Alright. to everyone who is saying barbossa is undead, I really disagree. In the first movie, the only people who were cursed were the people who DIRECTLY took a peice of the gold, as the monkey did. Also, whenever one of the cursed crew got shot or stabbed, they never bled. BUT, when Barbossa was stabbed, he did bleed. therefore, I belive he actually WAS dead. How he is now alive? I don't know, but I am positive they will reveal it in the third movie.
ok this has probably already been said somewhere but if it hasnt, there is an extra bit after the credits and i saw it yay!
Basically, it goes back to the tribes dancing around like they did jack, with the dog on the throne and a bone in his mouth and a cloak on or something. Bottom line, dogs dinner! lol
To those who believe that Jack chained himself to the ship...
Why would he do that?? There's nothing to even suggest that he did that! He was trying to get out of the chains profusely to jump back onto the ship, not to mention the fact that the entire movie was about him desperately trying to not be killed by the Kraken! And Elizabeth made a face of effort when she was locking the chains of whatever it was. She even EXPLAINED why she locked him there. So what would make you think she didn't do it and he did it to himself??
I was somewhat disappointed with the sequel. I absolutely LOVED the first one, but this one was a lot of action to keep your eyes busy but no amazing plot to keep your mind busy. I hope the third one will be better. I also don't like how they made Jack look like more of a bad guy in this movie. I mean, he is so easily likeable in the first one, even if he is a pirate. In this one, he is a little more selfish and evilish. I also hated what Elizabeth did in the movie.

Why did she have to chain him to the boat? She obviously regretted it about 5 seconds after she did it, so WHY did she even do it in the first place?!?
Ok, just to let you know, Barbossa is alive again because Tia Dalma brought him back to life with her voodoo. The director said that in an interview somewhere. Also, if you want to know something about the third movie, read on. If not, don't...
- Will and Elizabeth and the crew find Jack and they have to battle Lord Cutler Beckett, Norrington, and Davy Jones.
- Jack's father (played by Keith Richards) is in the story.
-The Black Pearl comes back.
-Jack is alive... duh.
Okay, here is a question for you all.
How do you rate Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley’s portrayal of their characters? In other words did they “step right back in” to their role?
Here is my rating:
Johnny Depp – A+++ (didn’t miss a beat in Pirates II, TERIFIC performance!)
Orlando Bloom – B (doesn’t come across as such a “nerd” this time)
Keira Knightley – D (went from witty to pouty!)
Keira Knightley was unconvincing as Elizabeth in Pirates II, she lost her charm, wit, and innocence.
As for Keira herself, did anyone else notice that beautiful sparkle in her eyes at the Premiere of Pirates I was missing in the Premiere for Pirates II? Check it out at IMDB, sadly, she really looks “hollow”.
Hi yall!! well I loved DMC!! and of course the first one 2.!! I dont think that Jack and Elizabeth end up together duhh the whole idea of this trilogy is Wills and Her love !! (but i actually envied her soo much when she kissed jack he is soo hott OMG) soo yeah double check that!! Barbosa is alive well thats cool if hes gonna get jack back into the movie!! hes totally worth it !!
I think the movie went down very well nd i liked it a lot, infact at this moment it is my fav movie , i wud like 2 say hello to kate.g my frend who also likes this film. i think it was gr8 and boy is johnny depp HOT!
Personally, I liked the movie quite a bit, but unlike the first one, which was EXCELLENT in practically all respects, this one felt too rushed and too long at the same time, odd though that may seem.
IMHO, there was a huge amount of stuff that need not have been included in the movie; the entire part with the savage cannibal tribe (King Kong, anybody?) is way too unoriginal and tired - though the hanging cage sequence was as cool as heck.
The other part I could have done without is the fighting on the water wheel with Will and Norrington. It wasn't that funny, didn't help with the suspension of disbelief one needs to fully enjoy a movie like this, and worst of all, it added nothing to the film. Except length.
That said; what I found interesting was the different reactions between men and women on the movie, or, to be more exact, Elizabeth's actions. It seems as if seven out of ten women are of the opinion that at the end of POTC3, Elizabeth should be sailing off into the sunset with Jack.
To say the least, not a single guy I know shares this opinion.
One of my favourite games on the SuperNES way back when was Super Ghouls & Ghosts. Frustrating as heck 'cause you have to basically play it twice; after reaching the last level, you are sent back to level 1 to start all over again so you can get the only weapon that can kill the final boss.
Now imagine after all that hard work and suffering, after killing the last boss, the Princess says "Oh thank you Arthur ... now I can go home and marry my true love - George!"
Now let's think of poor Will. He has willingly put himself into all sorts of terrible situations, including serving on a hell ship crewed by the most grotesque of monsters (really cool by the way) all for this woman - and she runs off with the guy (Jack may be cool, but there are limits) who put him on that ship in the first place?
Speaking for myself, I would be enraged beyond words if at the end of POTC3, Elizabeth Swann is not being married to Will Turner by Captain Jack Sparrow on the deck of the Black Pearl (or some other ship).
K,you all *NEED* to pay atention to the movie next time you watch it because you will see why barbossa is alive if you just pay atention.I'm gonna explain it,barbossa is alive because of Tia Dalma(Jamakin voodo lady). When Jack,Will,Mr.Gibbs,Pintel,Ragetti, and the miget dude are in Tia Dalma's hut in the back room as Tia Dalma goes and gets Jack a jar of dirt it shows barbossa's monkey on a pair of boots that appear to be on a dead body's leg's,no furter onto the body do they show but the legs are sort of fat like barbossa,so for some reason Tia Dalma put barbossa back to life, therefore barbossa was dead at one time.
Why would anyone think that Jack chained himself to the boat? There were a lot of confusing scenes in DMC but that was not one of them.
I was not impressed with this movie. I definitely liked the first one better. However, this will not stop me from analyzing the second one to death.
1-OK, so I thought that there were at least 2 scenes where the compass clearly points to Jack while Elizabeth is holding it, but my friend who saw the movie with me claims that the compass was just pointing to the chest. Ok I can maybe accept that as a possibility in the beach scene while they are trying to find where to dig (Maybe Jack was standing in the direction of the chest?). But what about the scene on the boat when Elizabeth is sitting on the deck and the compass points to Jack, and then she bites her lip and gets this uncomfortable and confused look on her face? Ok so theoretically Jack could have still been standing in the direction of the chest, but that seems like a little bit of a stretch.
2-Did the compass ever clearly point to Elizabeth while Jack was holding it (other than in the beach scene when she was sitting on the chest)? I have only seen the movie once so I can't really remember... I do remember that the compass pointed to the Pearl (where Elizabeth was) when Jack was rowing away, but we can't be sure whether it was pointing to her, or his shipmates, or the opportunity to do something honorable, or whatever.
Props to the people who noticed that the "Voodoo lady" had a locket that matched Jones' music box. I missed that, but when you think about it, it kind of makes sense (and if she is a voodoo magic person or whatever, then presumably she could be any age because she would have control over such things as death and wrinkles... so I don't really see her apparent youth as being an inconsistency).
And lastly... Will was obviously stunned and hurt when he saw Elizabeth kissing Jack-- you could see it in his face and hear it in the way he asked "Where's Jack?". Just because he didn't start screaming doesn't mean that he wasn't upset.
I think that Jack's compass pointed towards the Pearl because he wanted to do something honorable. You see, Elizabeth ended up doing a "Pirate" like action (like Sparrow said she would), while Jack ended up doing something "heroic" (like Elizabeth claimed).
hi every1
oh and lucky] at the end o fthe film all u saw was the dog sittin on
the trone wid the tribe that jack was wid the tribe.
i just cannot believe it wen elizabeth had da compass and it always pointed
2 jack and i fink dat jack likes elizabeth a bit i fink lol!!!
thank you all very much for all this information, it was very helpful in me understanding the movie. i was just wondering, whats up with Captain Jacks entry for the 2nd movie? why is he in a coffon? im confused. please reply!
this place is cool... i loved the movie... but didn't understand something... Is Jack the Undead too??? What is the thing on his palm??? It mysteriously vanishes when Davy Jones touches him but that things comes again after sometime.
Hey. I'm new to this but I wanted to make a few suggestions as that what I thought about the movie.
SPOILERS.........
Alright. I'm still confused as to why Barbosa in the first one eats all the apples...But that isn't a big deal...
In the 1st movie did anyone realize that Barbosas ring was made out of aztec gold? Not one of the cursed pieces either? Which would lead me to believe that being shot would in turn make him bleed, but he wouldn't die. I'm not sure why he would "pretend" to die then...But just wondering if anyone noticed that. And then in the 2nd movie Jack took the ring, that barbosa was wearing (made of aztec gold) and was wearing it when he went into the crackens mouth...if that's what you want to call it. If you notice when he gets out from the cuff he looks at his hand and kinda grins. Which in turn made me feel like he was trying to do the right thing, all the while knowing he can't REALLY die because he's wearing an aztec gold ring.
Also, did anyone else notice that when the undead monkey was let out of the cage he ran right up to barbosas foot? I thought that was a nice touch to the movie to definetly make you think.
I got the script for th e third movie's(At Worlds End) trailer script. Its awsome!spoilers ahead!!!! Theres a part were will is all pissed of at elizabeth and throws her arm off of him! and keith richards(jacks dad) talks to bill turner to both get their sons back! and reggetti has a diomand eye and norrington is commodore again but the kraken takes his ship!and some chinnise pirate, sao feng is after elizabeth and elizabeth only talks about rum.Davey jones is back and is after norrington and sparrow. and governer swann is being thrown in jail! so now since will doesn't want elizabeth, im available!
This has been confirmed in an official disney game.
Jack Sparrow used to work for the East India Trading Company, captaining a ship called the Wicked Wench. He performed odd jobs for Lord Cuttler Beckett, and when he refuesed to import slaves,Beckett ordered the torching and sinking on the Wicked Wench, and branded Jack a pirate.Jacks name was formally Jack Smith, and evidence in the first movie backs this up.When Jack hops aboard the Interceptor, and is asked his name,he replies 'Smith.' Even though it appeared to be used because it is a common name,it supports this story.
Someone please explain the increasing numbers of people standing in/around the river during each visit to the voodoo lady. There were only a couple of people the first time (some hidden/some not) but the second time-- after Jack's "death"-- they are everywhere and holding candles. What up with that?
Right, well anyways, I don't know if any of you caught this but, in answer to a question asked on here...
When the leader of the east india trading company talks about how he left a mark on jack and jack left a mark on him, he pokes at the fire with a stick that has a red hot "P" on the end of it. If you noticed in the first movie, after Captain Jack Sparrow saves Elizabeth, Commodore Norrington reaches to shake his hand and pulls up his sleeve revealing the same "P" branded on his wrist as is on the end of the poker the east india trading company guy had. Commodore Norrington also said "Had a brush with the East India Trading Company did we?" At least that is the mark that he left on Jack but as for what mark Jack left on him I don't really know.
NOw a question of my own.
What were the papers that Elizabeth had that guy from EITC sign? I got the impression that they were documents for them to have a legal marriage. Near the end of the movie, Commodore norrington brings them to the EITC guy and says something about having written in his own name. Does anyone understand this part of the movie?
