The penguin fetish started in 2005 by the unexpected popularity of March of the Penguins comes to a screeching halt with the latest attempt at cashing in on the worn out American love for the wobbly, tuxedo wearing fowls from down south. Surf’s Up is a blizzard of filmmaking foul ups, a perfect storm of blatant pandering and studio screenwriting by committee. It plays like it was written by a third-rate marketing department as a series of happy meal advertisements. It’s barely a movie at all, much less a good one.
Surf’s Up attempts to tell the story of a penguin who wants to be a surfer by using short mockumentary clips cobbled together with surfing action sequences reported on by real life surfers animated as penguins and acting as if they’re covering MTV’s X-Games, complete with loud, annoying, music. The penguin star in question is Cody Maverick, voiced by Shia LaBeouf, whose voice work is much better than his Poochie-like (watch ‘The Simpsons’ will ya?) character deserves. Actually, that’s just about the only thing this movie has going for it. Most of the voice cast is pretty good. Jeff Bridges plays a penguin surfing guru named the Geek and Jon Heder is less talentless than usual as the voice of a surfing chicken named Chicken Joe.
Re-enacting the celebrity obsessed, American Idol fueled dreams of the lowest common denominator of America’s youth, Cody is “discovered” by a surfing promoter and travels by whale to a tropical island where a penguin media frenzy is in progress to cover an annual penguin surfing event. Cody hopes to win, and like, totally be awesome on those waves.
Surf’s Up is a movie made for people who think dogs playing poker is funny. The film’s limp attempts at humor come strictly from the animals in it acting like people. They don’t say funny things, they just say human things, which is supposed to be hilarious because, you know, it’s penguins. This movie is exactly what I and many others were scared to death Happy Feet would be and wasn’t. Happy Feet managed to tell a complicated, and epic story about intelligent penguins who were, at the end of the day, still penguins. Surf’s Up goes in the opposite, and altogether horrible direction, of putting penguins on surf boards for no other reason than, hey, wouldn’t it be funny if penguins could surf? Well no, it isn’t.
What’s most baffling thing here is that for a film so desperate to seem cool and hip, Surf’s Up is completely out of touch with pop culture. MTV character confessionals haven’t been hip and hot since 1996. It doesn’t become fresh just because they’ve got penguins doing it. Surfing stopped being a cutting edge part of youth culture when the Beach Boys turned 30. Penguins stopped being awesome last year, when everyone enjoyed Happy Feet, and then got over it.
This is the worst possible sort of kids movie. The animation is bright and colorful, so maybe very young kids who can’t understand what’s going on will like it, just because of how bright it is. But everyone else is going to be bored out of their mind. Large groups of people started walking out of the free screening I was in after about fifteen minutes, and the kids who did stick around were fidgety and disinterested. Most got up and wandered around the theater to talk to their friends. If Surf’s Up accomplishes anything, it will be to bring families together, in boredom. Take your kids and be bored together.

Well I was freakishly obsessed with it coming out on June 8th 2007!!!! IT WAS SOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but i am 12... so who am i to talk.
Josh, I find your review pretentious and over critical. You scrutinize every aspect of this film and your MTV talking head references are a mediocre attempt to flex some intellect.
You seem to hint that surfing culture is not so mainstream post beach boys - well arguably the scene is not the same as it was back then because it has spread over the world, the only difference is epicenters have shifted and bloomed elsewhere but all still share the common surfing bond.
I would like to think, as a surfer, that this film would excite children and possibly awaken some to surfing.
did not see the movie, don't plan to after about 4 bad reviews. but i have to say something:
lauren's comment up there shows just who the demographic is for this movie. laurie, honey, my sister's 16 and she liked march of the penguins. maybe it's because she's...i dunno...*smart*?
I also disagree with your review. For someone that grew up on the coast, the animation of being inside a wave was fantastic. There are some great jokes and genuine belly laughs in this film. I thought the message about "who cares about winning, let's just have fun with our friends" was a valuable one, especially these days when every 7 year old kid gets a ribbon in a school race so that they will not feel mediocre. Winning and the urge to compete has become everything - there is a lot of value in simply enjoying a particular sport or game. The combination of older songs and fairly recent stuff worked well - I'd definately recommend this pic to both adults and kids alike.
This movie rocked my socks. Judging from the comments here, it's a love hate thing. I definitely loved it. The humor is great. The mockumentary style is unique for an animated CG movie and opens up loads of opportunity for humor, a la The Office. Cody perfectly captures the character of a lovable yet rebellious 17 year old, and the other characters are also well done. If you're looking for something fresh and entertaining, and are still a kid at heart, this might be it.
I honestly think that this movie was a joke on children’s movies. If I bought a movie ticket for my child to see “Surf’s UP” I would ask for my money back. How is a child supposed to sit through this movie and be intrigued??? I myself couldn’t stand it. I tried watching “Surf’s UP” last night and it put me to sleep…literally!! I will never watch this movie again. I thought it was absolutely horrible. I understand after watching “Surf’s UP” that the idea was more as if it was a documentary but i ask; What child will want to watch or even sit through a documentary?? Would u have?? I was very unamused and bored!! This just confirmed my conversation the other day that todays generation of children are not recieving the same quality entertainment like i was growing up!!!
Well any person that thought it was bad obviously never tried surfing, and just cant relate. I have been surfing for over 20 years and my 7 year old who has been surfing for 2 years now absolutely loved it. It portrayed the arrogance and talent of what it's like to be a 17 year old surf star hopeful to the T. and maybe a good trip to the beach with family and friends is what is needed for all the nay sayers, get out of the city and loosen up, after all thats what surfings about having mindless fun!
What bothered me the most about this movie is the missed opportunity for what it COULD have been had the creators not been pandering to the requrement that potty humor and sexual innuendo permeate everything in popular culture.
I actually enjoyed the movie till I realized that there was a lot of language that I wouldn't want the 3 year olds watching taking to pre-school on Monday. Then I felt conned, tricked, and outraged because this film is really marketed to kids. Having pushed the envelope over the cliff in the area of adult entertainment, is the kids' market the only challenge left?
When I asked my sister if the language bothered her, she said that it is in everything and after a while, you don't even hear it anymore. She also suggested it was included so the grown-ups "wouldn't get bored while they watched the movie with their kids." Gee, what kind of world do we have where parents can't suffer through a boring movie without bathroom jokes, drug references, and sexual innuendo, for the sake of their kids. Are we narcissistic or what?
My other sister thought it was darling and didn't hear or see anything offensive.
What?! I think this movie flew by adult's and children's heads, but me, being a 16 year old girl thought it was AWESOME and so did the friends I went with! Maybe it's because there's a lot of jokes that kids are too young to understand, and adults too old. I mean, Cody the penguin is 17 after all. How could you possibly think this was boring?!?! AHHH! It was the perfect balance of Hilariousness, cuteness, and surfer coolness. Sure, the penguin thing may be a liiiitle overdone, but this one's so much coooooooler than boring March of the Penguins and Pfffft Happy Feet.
Thank god I did not spend a dime to see this with the kids. After downloading it, we sat on the couch together and thought that we were in for something new or refreshing. NOT! the first 5 minutes are the same as the rest, just penguins being interviewed on TV almost like a documentary. We all were so tired of the non comical and boring clips of penguins on surfboards that we had to talk to each other just to stay awake. After watching this, I never want to see another penguin movie again likewise to my kids. The comedy is something that might make a 3 year old laugh at. 0 out of 10
i disagree with this review, although i do agree, the penguin thing has become tiresome, this one actual put some interest back into the idea. and how can you not find this movie funny, the documentary style, the witty banter, yes some stuff was suggestive but it wasnt "gasp" worthy and everything. animation wise it was fanatastic im a cartoonist and wouldnt lie about this kind of thing those were the best water physics ive seen to date and the charater design was great, the story had multiple lessons to be learned if you actually pay attention. all in all i highly reccomend it.
Josh I totally disagree with your review, you are way wrong. Seven adults and one 10 year old boy went to see it and we all loved it. The animation is amazing, I'm a surfer and the waves and surfing scenes were so right on, it gave me the same thrill I feel when I'm surfing. And the message of the movie, " there are different ways to be a winner" is so powerfull, it's not all about how many trophies ya got. Since you didnt mention the good message in your review I have to think it went right over your head............
Josh hit the nail squarely on the head. I took my kids last night to this uninspired attempt to cash in on the now tired Penguin craze and they could not sit still. "I want more popcorn" "Ihave to go to the bathroom", "iam going to sit over there" and so on. The movie was boring and ridiculously predictable even for 9 year olds.
After most movies on the drive home thee are animated discussions between the kids about what they justb saw. Last night they talked about bicycling and the neighborhood kids.
Save your money. Mcdonalds will have to send back alot of toys.
Totally DISAPPOINTED!!!!!! Okay I realize that there was a lesson to be learned in the movie, but it was not presented well at all. I am a huge fan of children's movies and I have no kids, because they allow you to step into another world and not have to deal with all the issues we as adults have to deal with. This movie was really slow, not funny, and a few scenes a little over the top for kids. I have seen far better movies that are not my all time favorites, but this one is at the bottom of my list. I was even more disappointed because I am really fascinated by penguins, and did not really find them as adorable as I had expected. Nice try, but next time try harder!
I totally disagree with the review. My daughter and I had a good time. I loved the documentary style especially the fast forward segment. I thought this was a disney movie made by younger group of animators and not a sop fest like most. The inside jokes were great, if you have seen The Big Lobawski and other adult jokes hidden in the movie, I found myself laughing out loud when the kids were silent.
I totally agree with Josh Tyler. I took my grandson to see it (age 6 1/2) - we both were bored to tears. The writing was terrible and cliched and not funny.
