The Grudge wrapped up with all its mysteries finished save one: When's Sarah Michelle Gellar going to die? The Grudge 2 answers that question pretty early, and then spends the rest of its time in a scattered exploration of the minutiae of the original Grudge story. For instance the big reveal this time is in explaining where Kayako's trademark croaking sound comes from. Not much of a payoff.

Fortunately, what The Grudge 2 lacks in plot it makes up for in cheap, tittilating scares. Creator and director Takashi Shimizu is a genius at cramming his ghosts into strange nooks and crannies and then scaring the beejeezus out of us as they pop out from wherever they've been hiding. After the first three or four times seeing that little kid sitting in the shadows you'd think it'd stop being scary, but Shimizu is so good at what he does that he keeps finding ways to make his audience jump out of their seat, even when his movie starts running long and Stephen Susco's script starts repeating itself.

The only place Takashi doesn't stuff his powdery ghosts is up a cheerleader's skirt, surprising since there are so many of them readily available in The Grudge 2. The film is stuffed to the gills with half-naked schoolgirls and leggy blond cheerleaders and seems to take particular glee in finding ways to get them haunted, tortured and killed by Kayako and her spooky clan. And why not? It's a lot of fun.

What's less fun is the movie's main storyline, which loosely follows Amber Tamblyn as Aubrey Davis, the sister of Sarah Michelle's Kara Davis character from the first movie. She wanders around Japan trying to figure out what happened to her sister, but we all know it's fruitless. There can only be one end for such a character and with her story so broken up by ghost panty raids and Jessica Beal in the middle of a strange, rage-driven domestic problem it's hard to work up enough energy to care what happens to her. By the end of the movie I was good and ready for Aubrey and just about everyone else in the film to drop dead. The movie's not excessively long, but ever second over 90 minutes feels unbearable. Cut it short guys. Base-level thrills don't work as well when they're stretched out.

As a normal movie I'd called The Grudge 2 a disaster. The plot is a mess as it abandons the original, and fairly simple premise of the first movie. It used to be simple. Go in the house, you'll end up dead. Now the curse has become more like the common cold, spreading around for no other reason than that it gives Shimizu a wider range of victims. I guess it was getting to be too much trouble to find ways to get people in the house. However, as a way to get good and scared I think The Grudge 2 works. It doesn't make a lot of sense and sometimes it's even laughable, but it's also scary as hell. Shimizu does cheesy, jump out of the shadows scares better than just about anyone. If that's what you're looking for, The Grudge 2 really delivers.

  • Am I the only person who found this movie terrifying? I've always been scared of curses and haunted houses and such. I thought it made plenty of sense, the way it expanded out from the initial house. Maybe every bad thing CAN be traced back to one event that spread bad energy throughout the world. Bah, maybe not? But it was worth the theory right??? Right? haha fine, I'm alone on this one I guess.
  • Not sure when it will end. I understood some plots. Although, the scenes change very quickly and when they don't they seem to carry on, and it seems like forever and a day. It's hard to try and wait for the whole movie to know how it ends, and when it fianlly does they leave you with EVEN more questions.
  • i did understand da plots, but a bit disappointed... when will it ends..???
  • Far out it is Scary but it was a good movie
  • Would I be wrong in guessing that everyone who couldn't understand the movie is between the ages of 12 and 17? Hmmm... Maybe you weren't looking directly at the screen. Oh, I know! Indigestion from that pesky nacho sauce, huh.
That said......Does the plot have to reach out and slap you across the face? Do you need cliff notes or a map? Hows about the ushers pass out outlines as you're walking into the theatre?

As you all can probably tell, I'm a little irritated at the fact that most people who say that they didn't understand something, probably were not paying attention at all! At least not the kind of attention to watch a Takashi Shimizu flick. Shimizu is innovative and extremely competent, which you would know if you'd seen any of his other movies. But, what am I saying? That would actually require half a brain and an attention span past the 5th grade level.

Do the rest of us a favor and check for a pulse once in a while.
  • Do not waste your time to see this movie. It fails at every attempt to establish a plot, and was more confusing than was worth. I would not even award a single star to this movie.
  • This movie was good and scary, but it REALLY confused me...a LOT. Could someone please explain it?!
  • Urg! This was the worst sequel for a movie to ever happen. The whole movie was boring save the little parts with Kayako, but that's because I adore the Japanese Style of malicious apperitions. The old man on the bus was another small fun part but aside from that it stunk. They didn't really introduce anything new to the story and when they did purpose a question within the movie they quickly shot it down and answered it out front.
I enjoyed "The Grudge" but coming out with something this horrible as a sequel I think they could have ended with the first. They tend to be over doing it and lost all plot for this movie, giving it a continous cycle that most likely won't end. It may be a good scare for those starter horror fans but it's definatly a low leveled movie compared to any other horror movie.
I know I'm being harsh but giving the expectations set from the first movie, this didn't even make the radar. The Teletubbies are more horrific than this.
I'll leave it at that, but this is just my opinion.
  • The Grudge 2 is such an awesome movie!!..i watched it with my friend and we were soo frickin scared but had a great laugh!! we loved it soo much!! hope there is a 3rd sequel!!

  • the movie was GREAT i liked it

    make morew of these movies
  • I haven't seen the first Grudge movie remake that came out, but I did see the original japanese version and I can fairly say that Shimizu Takashi-san really knows how to set an atmosphere of surprised mortality O_o.

...as for "The Grudge 2" that did came out recently, I have to say that I actually ended up watching it twice. Now, let me explain this first though:

day#1. It was a Tuesday evening and this is from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (and no, the list does not go on...What? you want the postal code now?!? *takes out katana*)..just kidding; anyways, what I wanted to say was it was on a Tuesday and the ticket price was almost half the regular price...and as for the movie...hm..well, let's put it this way. I have seen a lot of scary movies in my days, and as much as horror movies with gore and blood are awesome, I still prefer the suspenseful, oft-times psychological horror ones. What's not to like about those, you know? You'd expect instant death, or blood overflow but instead those movies puts you in instances where you either just end up holding your breath, and -if not-, at least waiting it out to see what will happen next, while at the same time, being made to listen to creepy music that just further the mood of a particular scene....but I digress...basically, the first time I went to watch it, it ended up being a day which, in the theatre I happened to be in, 95% of the audience present were teenagers...now..I'm 24 now, and have been a teenager once, after all..but damn, I don't recall myself ever chattering endlessly while a movie was playing... I don't want to make a story long but what I can say in the end is, if people are going to the movies just to chat among themselves, extremely loudly, on how this or/and that scene was "sooo stupid" or "soo not scary", while at the same instance, wetting themselves profusely or screaming like an idiot during said scenes...don't waste your money to go to a screening if all you're doing is pointlessly talking without a care -and wasting your time-, while at the same time disturbing those who goes to the movies to watch a movie.. with that said on to--> (or RETURN key..moving down)

day#2. Alright, I've already seen the movie once by then, despite the ordeal, so I have been somewhat affected by now, and this time, my review of it might be a bit biased (maybe). Well, let's put it this way. I didn't need to see the first one to understand this second installment of The Grudge. I think it would have been nice either way, if Sarah died, or lived (of course, then the story would be different, 'nuff said). In this one, I liked how well-timed the scary scenes showed themselves and they're not always expected, which was a very good technique. I was suprised, and happy (not happy in glee, but in acknowledgement) to see that the "death" faces were pretty much realistic. What I mean by that is that, when people die, it is often random, but the faces have this look to them and in The Grudge 2, it was close enough (I know from having seen real footage of aftermaths of wars and other atrocities, through random research). At least, they weren't "dramatic" deaths. All these small notes aside, I don't really have much to say as I don't really want to spoil too much else of the movie for those who haven't seen it yet. Also, I read all the comments above and see some people saying how confusing it is. I can understand that feeling well when watching a movie, and this isn't an attack on opinions or anything, but please go to a movie with an intention of preparedness, maturity, and being entertained, regardless of the outcome. I know, some might think "well, how can one be prepared for something one hasn't seen or tried yet?". Good point, but that's not the point I'm trying to make. And I've made blunders myself, so all's fair, that's fair...but what I'm saying is if you really think about it while watching (as opposed to staring at the screen, scenes after scenes), you'll understand. Hehe, no point arguing because those who understand what I mean, understand what I mean. It's that simple (I know you know what it is that I'm talking about).

All, in all, good reviews/responses from everyone. I'm serious ^_~

as for stars, I don't care for stars hehe

and big thanks to Josh for starting this off with your review.

    Take care, all ^_^
  • First of all I must admit that I love "The Grudge" It is actually one of my favorite scary movies, and when I Found out there was going to be a second part I was So exited. so I Watched and i was very dissapointed about how much it sucked !!! there are so many things what were not necesary like the family on Chicago, they could have been left out. Then the death of Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) I was hoping that she would stay alive to stop everything, well i just think it would've been a better plot to the story if she didn't die. There are also so many things that made me so confused that i'm still triyng to figure out. So if you want my advice Don't watch this movie.
  • Well it must have done something right because it scared the pants off the box office. I haven't seen it yet, but it seems like it had the same elements I enjoyed from the first film...so I'm going. Long Live Sarah Michelle!
  • This movie confused me soo much. i laughed really hard and fell asleep lol. it never seemed to end.
  • I saw this with some friends last night and after the long process it took to get into the theater (one of us lost her ticket so she had to get a new one, another one disappeared for a couple minutes, someone else was like, 20 minutes late, etc, etc.) we were all looking forwards to some cheap thrills and a semi-interesting plotline.

Sadly, we didn't get what we wanted. Not at all. The 45 minutes or so were spent wondering "wtf is going on" The three plotlines going on, though in different times was to say the least, confusing.

I didn't understand the whole bacon grease-oil thing, and why they showed it at one point in the beginning, but then again at another closer to the end.

Maybe I'm being too cynical here, but the main characters were really stupid, esp. the little boy in Chicago.

I spent an incredible amount of time checking my watch trying to figure out how much longer I would have to suffer. The Grudge 2 has to be the most boring movie I've ever seen.

The only good part was the old asian guy on the bus, which brought everyone to laugh for ages afterwards.

Save yourself 11.95 and watch something else!!!
  • I appreciate that this site allows for a response, because the reviews for this movie have been truly disapponting to me. Kudos to you for at least admitting it's scary to the general audience (meaning it fulfills the horror movie's goal even if it did not scare me). I think the main fault of this movie is that for some reason people are missing a lot of the points. There is a very defined reason why the curse is getting worse in the sequel; it is spelled out by the mom that is visited by Amber. The reason the curse spreads to Chicago is clearly shown at the end of the movie, and that location had some of the best scenes in the movie. Also, it gave a mysterious element to the plot along the way (which apparently people just write off as being too confusing...well, yeah...until the end. I found it to be curious, not confusing).

Also, I love the fact that Sarah Michelle Geller's character is killed off at the beginning (and kudos again for not revealing how, which I thought was a nice touch for the beginning of the movie), because that was the main problem I had with the ending to the 2nd one. I liked the fact that there would probably be a sequel, but if everyone dies that enters the house and the house didn't burn down, she should be dead too. To me, there is a fairly consistent timeline for the deaths. One inconsistency to me is that Sarah's character should have been dead before her sister got there (ie, at end of movie #1), but that can be forgiven.

I think you make a good point saying that it's probably getting difficult to get people in the house. However, I'd like to point out that the deaths were still only caused by people that entered the house, even if it begins to spread around them. And, honestly, do we really want movie after movie with no change to the fact that people have to enter the house to die? That would get old quite fast. I like the fact that the movie is expanding its plot in a logically manner but not just staying the same.

I think this movie sets up a 3rd movie, unless the rage in fact can not be stopped. I think the true worth of #1 and especially #2 is a possible 3rd movie to close out the plot. But, left alone and with the ending to #2, I still think the movie is decent and does not deserve this bashing I'm seeing on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Yeah, even I'm borderline on it and as you point out Ben I'm more positive about it than most.

There are things I liked about it, and things I didn't.

Lina, on our scale three is dead on average. We don't go lower than 1. I pointed out things I didn't like about it, and then point out what I did like about it.

To me, a horror movie only needs to do one thing: Scare people. I think Grudge 2 is scary. Even if everything else doesn't work I think it manages that. Hence my BARELY positive rating.

And by the way Lina, thanks for actually reading the review and not just looking at the star rating. I appreciate that. So many people don't bother to do that. Star ratings are really meaningless and if they weren't such a default I wouldn't do them. So often people just look at the rating and ignore everything you wrote. It should be the other way around, ignore the stupid stars and actually read the review!
  • Yeah, the rating of three out of five stars seems pretty generous. Out of all the reviews so far on Rottentomatoes.com, you are the only one who even gave an "ok" review for this movie. The movie sounds bad.
  • This reviewer says at many times that the movie isn't good...yet gives it a three out of five, which is above average. Care to deliberate on that? =D
  • Now this movie sounds good, I will be sure to see it for a good laugh!
