Snow, whose presence is no surprise, has pretty much composed anything musically related to the series, whether television show or movie. While the story and characters have pretty much gone out with a fizzle in I Want To Believe, Snow and his score go out on a high note. ... read more |

Bates’ score appears, full of repetitive themes and elements that sound borrowed from a myriad of other movies. Perhaps that’s fitting since the movie itself does a lot of borrowing as well. Unispiring strings, distorted guitars, panicked brass and out of control percussion take turns trading out alternating sleepy and chaotic moments that aren’t interesting in the least to listen to. ... read more |

What makes for a truly great film score? That’s the question members of the Academy are required to ask themselves when trying to decide what scores to nominate. Obviously the first criteria is to determine whether or not the score was composed by John Williams. If it’s not, the process of analysis gets a little bit more involved. [Part 2 of a look at some of the Oscar Nominated scores and songs for 2007.] ... read more |

A big part of what makes Ratatouille an all around great film is its amazing soundtrack. Carefully and joyfully crafted by Michael Giacchino, the score did receive an Oscar nomination and, in my opinion, deserves the win without question. Alien was a movie that set the bar for sci-fi horror movie genre. For better or for worse it spawned three sequels and made a legend of the character Ellen Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo. If you mention the name Danny Elfman, the name Tim Burton usually isn't far behind. Sure, Elfman has created some of the most eclectic and wonderfully bizarre scores to match Burton's wild cinematic creations like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands. Some even recognized hints of that style in Elfman's scores for Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. But if that's all you know of Elfman, you're missing ... read more |

The Chronicles of Narnia find themselves in crazy company lately, what with every studio on the planet scrambling to turn children's fantasy stories into the next big box office cash-in. Of course, few of them can hold a candle to the likes of Narnia or Lord of the Rings when those movies have so far gotten the royal treatment in the production values department. But, that treatment could be changing a bit ... read more |

Executives meddling with the creative process on a movie is nothing
new, and sadly enough it's more common than you might expect. Give a
guy a suit and an overpaid salary and suddenly he's Steven freakin'
Spielberg. However, it's not too often that the boys "upstairs" get
involved at the soundtrack level. Not the case with Fred Claus
where a "studio exec" decided to ... read more |

I wasn't a huge fan of the directions "Battlestar Galactica" went in its third season, but if there's one area that improved it was the score. Bear McCreary, building on the moving themes and scores he composed for the show's first two seasons, took things to a new height for the ... read more |
