It’s time to celebrate the Christmas/ Chanukah/ Kwanza/ Festivus Holiday season, so here at Cinema Blend we’re enjoying Twelve Days of Christmas. Yes, we know traditionally the “12 days” start with Christmas, but we plan on being celebrated out by that time, so we’re pushing the twelve days leading up to the holiday.
Here in Blend Tech, we’re celebrating with a geeky wish list. Sadly, these are gifts we’d love to have, but will only be able to wish about since they aren’t likely to exist anytime soon. That’s the joy of science-fiction and fantasy, imagining the future, it’s just a shame this stuff isn’t real yet.
On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…
A cloak of invisibility
So here’s an interesting piece of behind the scenes information: today’s selection was originally “the One Ring” from Lord of the Rings. My wife, who I absolutely adore for conversations like this, pointed out that there really weren’t any benefits to put the One Ring on a wish list, other than the invisibility, which was only accomplished by using the ring, but led to the user going a bit crazy. Sure, invisibility’s great, but not if it transforms you into Gollum over time.
So, instead of wishing for the One Ring, we’re wishing for an invisibility cloak – something nice and reliable like that Harry Potter fellow has. You know, moving around undetected, without the whole invisibility effect wearing off over time. There’s a lot we could do with something like that. Find out what people say about us behind our backs, sneak into private meetings, even take trips into women’s locker rooms. Yes, my precious, those are all good ideas.
As Potter and his friends have shown, there are plenty of uses for an invisibility cloak that don’t break moral codes. As always, it’s just a tool and the wearer dictates how it can be used. I’m just not certain everyone would be as honorable as the boy wizard. Maybe that’s why we don’t have them yet.
