12 Days Of Christmas: The Book Of GKar
It’s time to celebrate the Christmas/ Chanukah/ Kwanza/ Festivus Holiday season, so here at Cinema Blend we’re enjoying Twelve Days of Christmas. Yes, we know traditionally the “12 days” start with Christmas, but we plan on being celebrated out by that time, so we’re pushing the twelve days leading up to the holiday.

Here in Blend Tech, we’re celebrating with a geeky wish list. Sadly, these are gifts we’d love to have, but will only be able to wish about since they aren’t likely to exist anytime soon. That’s the joy of science-fiction and fantasy, imagining the future, it’s just a shame this stuff isn’t real yet.

On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…

The wisdom of the Book of G’Kar

Last year science fiction lost one of its greatest assets with the passing of Andreas Katsulas, who gave Babylon 5’s character of G’Kar a voice and soul beyond compare. G’Kar, who started out as a haughty warrior, wound up finding a more spiritual path in life, and uttered some of the most profound ideas science fiction has offered.

As part of G’Kar’s transition to a spiritual leader, the character supposedly assembled a volume that collected together some of his thoughts and ideas. This became known as the Book of G’Kar and the basis of a religion for G’Kar’s people.

While it would be easy for Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski to pen an actual “Book of G’Kar” to appease fans, the truth is it wouldn’t be the same without the voice of G’Kar behind it. As the sage character himself stated in Babylon 5’s Declaration of Principles, every voice we lose diminishes us. With Andreas’s passing, we lost a voice of wisdom, and without it G’Kar can be no more than words on a page – words without the soul that gave them a voice. The Book of G’Kar can be a wish, but the real thing will never come to fruition.
