If you’ve read Cinema Blend articles for long enough, you know there’s an undying love and appreciation for Andreas Katsulas’s portayal of G’kar on Babylon 5. For many people, any hope of resurrecting the show in any form died when Katsulas tragically passed away a few years ago. His character and performance has always been a highlight of Babylon 5 and a representation of the best of television programming.
The first online community I was a part of was centered around Babylon 5, and through that group I saw how people could come together from all around the globe over one common interest. I never saw anything like what’s happened at the Museum of the Moving Image, where one of the prosthetic masks of G’kar and a life mask of Katsulas have been donated by a group of fans.
As the story goes, a fan saw the mask for sale on eBay. Seeing this as a chance to preserve the history of one of her favorite shows, she rallied together a Usenet newsgroup and collected donations to win the auction. The suggestion was then made to donate the mask to the museum, where it could be appreciated by fans for years to come.
According to the official press release, the eleven donors of the G’Kar mask are Amy Guskin (Pennsylvania), George Brickner (Illinois), Neil Burton (England), Caryn Dunkel (New Jersey), Iva Ferris (Pennsylvania), Blair Leatherwood & Judith Emick-Leatherwood (California), Jan Schroeder (Florida), Janna Silverstein (Washington), Dennis Weldy (Alabama), and Hilary Weston (England).
