E3 2007: Wii Zapper Is For Real

E3 2007: Wii Zapper Is For Real Lots of things are happening at E3 2007. Maybe not as much as we’d have liked, but it looks like there are real reasons to pick up a PS3. What we’re here for are toys and gadgets though. Oh, how we love our peripherals. And who better to give us two of the best in the show than Nintendo? Taking full advantage of the Wii’s inherent abilities Nintendo unveiled two new peripherals at their press briefing earlier in the week. And yes, I do think they are both awesome. Let’s talk about some gun action.

First up is the long rumored, and often photochopped, Wii lightgun Zapper. It took every journalist and gamer 2.1 seconds to realize that the Wii remote is a perfect Zapper, if only a case could be created. A year after we began wondering how it could come to glorious life and we have an answer. Fanmade prototype designs always envisioned the setup as a one handed peripheral. Most common was having the nunchuck as the base and the remote as the barrel. It seemed fairly obvious to everyone. Except Nintendo, who decided that they would do us one better.

The official Wii Zapper is fashioned in the style of a sub-machine gun. It’s a two handed unit that provides a great amount of stability when aiming. This will be important if Nintendo and third parties intend to seriously put shooting games on the console. The problem with a nunchuk setup, a la Red Steel, is that you can’t keep your hand steady all the time. The two handed control will eliminate that problem, while also allowing sensitivity to be notched way up. Hello pwnage.

The main issue I can see is the limitation on buttons. On the one hand you’ll have easy access to the C and Z buttons on the nunchuck, along with the trigger for the remote. But all of those face buttons on the remote cannot feasibly be included in gunplay. Until we get our hands on one we won’t be sure how it all works. I’d envision reloading working by a quick jerk of the gun, or by shooting off screen like in old light gun arcade titles.

The Wii Zapper is scheduled for release this year, and will come bundled with software to showcase it’s abilities. I wonder if by “software” they mean a proper Duck Hunt or even an old lightgun game. Hmmm.
