Fox Stars Offering Electronic Copies On DVD
If you’re one of those people who rip DVDs for “archival purposes,” Fox Home Entertainment might be providing an enormous time saver. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox is expected to announce that the upcoming Live Free or Die Hard two-disc special edition will include an electronic copy of the media, launching a new special feature for Fox DVD releases.

The electronic file will be playable on computers and some portable video players. Even better, however, is the suggestion that it will be DRM-free, making it easier to move the file around. The only protection is expected to be the need to enter a serial code, found in the DVD packaging, in order for the DVD to download the electronic file to computers. Once the code is entered, the movie file is ready within five minutes for play. Basically Fox is beating hackers/rippers to the punch and providing a higher quality copy of their own product while they’re at it.

Live Free or Die Hard is expected to be the debut of this electronic feature, with more Fox titles offering electronic copies in the future. No additional titles have been announced yet, but expect it to be the bigger, blockbuster movies that would appeal to the crowd that would utilize electronic copies anyway.
