The days of going to a photo processing center are nearly at an end. Kodak has put its full resources behind home photo printing and digital archival. In that vein, the visual giant has announced news of a new ink cartridge that will last for 100 years to go along with a new EasyShare printer line. Current inks may last up to 15 before your family members start to fade out. That’s pretty cool, but Kodak also announced the ink cartridges will be half the cost. Half?!?
Printer owners, especially those who like to print out digital pictures, know the obscene cost of cartridges. Cutting the price in half, and 600% increase in life of the ink, nearly blows my mind. The black cartridge will be priced at $9.99 and color will run $14.99. Kodak claims this is at least 50% cheaper than refills from competitors. Of course, half the price may mean half the quality. PC World has a product comparison up at their site. The analyst who talked with Kodak indicates the speed of printing is quite fast, and the quality is very strong. We’ll find out for ourselves when the new EasyShare printers are released in March.
All of the printers include two USB ports so you can hook up both a camera and a USB driver or PC. The 5300 and 5500 series include media card readers and LCD displays. For those with laptops that want to print and have in the past needed to set up a printer on a network, a Bluetooth 2.0 attachment will be available separately for wireless printing.
