LEGO has come a long way from its original multi-colored bricks building a variety of generic architectural plans. It all started with Star Wars, adding the franchise’s unique characters and crafts to its library. Since then Harry Potter and Batman have both become part of LEGO’s collection. This year add yet another Warner Brothers produced franchise to the LEGO collection: Speed Racer.
According to an announcement from the brick manufacturer, LEGO has aquired the rights to the upcoming movie and will produce four playsets this year as part of its LEGO Racers collection. The sets, ranging in price from $19.99 to $59.99, will include key figures from the Speed Racer movie and cartoon. Expect to see Speedy himself, as well as Racer X, Trixie, Spirtle, Chim-Chim, Mom and Pops, and more.
The sets will beat this year’s Speed Racer film into theaters – the toys will hit shelves around April while the picture doesn’t open until May 9th. Still, with some of the characters listed in the press release (Snake Oiler? Cruncher Block?) I have to imagine the cartoon’s fanbase is probably more of the target audience for these LEGO sets. Either way, it looks like another winning partnership between Warner Brothers and LEGO.
