If you jumped on the Apple MacBook Air bandwagon quickly there’s good news for you this week: your new laptop is probably flying its way to you right now. According to Apple, the first MacBook Air laptops have shipped.

Don’t expect to get one right away if you haven’t already pre-ordered. Although the units have theoretically shipped, phone calls by Computer World to several Apple stores yielded no results. When told that Apple had announced the laptop had started shipping, sales reps stated that they’ll probably have them in about two days.

If Apple’s iPhone was any indication, however, don’t expect MacBook Airs to stay in stock for long. Apple fanatics have no problem waiting in line for the next beloved invention to come along, and then gobble them up quickly. Even though Apple stores anticipate carrying the low and higher end versions of the Air, I would be surprised if they were able to keep either in stock for long over the next month or so.

While I’m in the market for a new laptop, and most likely will go with an Apple again, I don’t think I’ll be jumping on the Air wagon just yet. Although I’d love to have a much thinner computer, I’m not sold on the concept of a machine without a disc drive, finding myself far too frequently in situations where “borrowing” the drive from a nearby machine just isn’t an option. If you’re one of the early adopters, however, let us know what you think.
