Microsoft Releases Public Beta For Next Windows Server Longhorn
Microsoft has released a public beta version of it’s next edition of Windows Server, codenamed “Longhorn.” Beta 3 is the first to be offered to the public, with 1 and 2 going to private parties for internal testing. Redmond is hoping that with the data collected from this public beta a final version of “Longhorn” can be released to manufacturing this fall.

Microsoft believes the next version of Server will help IT to automate routine tasks, tighten security, and improve efficiency. “Longhorn” seeks to free IT professionals from those mundane daily management tasks by incorporating administrative help into the server. While Microsoft plans a late fall 2007 release, it’s widely believed an official launch will happen next spring. But for now, if you want to try out the Beta 3 version you can grab it here.

Below are the latest and greatest features from the Beta 3 build of “Longhorn”:

-- Windows PowerShell is now included in the product.
-- Active Directory Federation Services improvements allow customers to implement new policies and make it easier to set up a relationship between trusted partners.
-- The Server Core installation option now comes with additional roles and enhanced functionality, such as print services and Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services.
-- The Server Manager console includes additional remote administration tools to provide a more integrated management environment.
-- Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, now on by default, provides a persistent and more secure environment beginning at installation.
-- NAP is integrated with Microsoft Update and Windows Update to enable administrators to decide which updates are critical and set policies accordingly. It also has a new administrative interface for simplified setup, scalability and better performance.
