Star Wars 30th Anniversary: Toys And Gadgets From Celebration IV

Star Wars 30th Anniversary: Toys And Gadgets From Celebration IV Even if you’re not a geek, there is a movie franchise you’re probably quite familiar with. It’s the rare child who did not see these films numerous times, and they inspired imagination and the world of Hollywood for 30 years. I’m talking about Star Wars of course. This past Friday Star Wars Celebration IV kicked off the 30th anniversary of the greatest sci-fi saga the world has ever known. Unfortunately you had to be exclusively invited, so for my own celebration I stayed home and looked at pictures of all the remarkable (and some not-so remarkable) items available to attendees.

In particular there are two items available at the online Celebration Store for those lucky bastards who got to attend that are just phenomenally cool. The first is a set of magnets with cartoony versions of the iconic characters. I’d also be interested in t-shirt versions of these cartoon characters. Ah well, I guess that’s what ebay is for. The other item that piqued my interest as I browsed through the PDF version of the store was an action figure.

I’m too young to remember seeing the films in the theater, even though I’m told I was dragged to Jedi as a youngin’. What I do remember is the action figures. I set up countless times a battle on Endor that included Chewy, some Ewoks, Han Solo, a Storm Trooper, and about 3,000 of those green army men. Video games have nothing on a 7-yr old’s imagination. So imagine my joy at seeing brand new, and exclusive, action figures of C-3PO and R2-D2. These are unlike any piece you’ve ever owned because they are not the versions we have come to know and love. These are in fact based on the concept art Ralph McQuarrie did for what was then known as The Star Wars. The artwork used to fashion these collectible figures is the same that Twentieth Century Fox saw when they approved the budget for the film. You can read all the details on this awesome piece of Star Wars memorabilia in the picture below.

Sure there are some pirates that will be big this weekend, and a human spider kept us enthralled a few weeks ago despite some lackluster storytelling. Heck, even Star Wars has had it’s own moments of mediocrity (midi-frickin-chlorians). But you can’t take away the childhood memories of wonder and excitement as the Millenium Falcon cleared the way for Luke’s run down the chasm that saved the day. If you’re one of the lucky few who got one of these items, congratulations. For the rest of us, the USPS announced the winner in the battle between light and dark. Yoda will be making an appearance on stamps starting this fall.
