Have you seen the new Hyundai commercial in the U.K.? It’s a cool looking clip, but it’s the technology behind the spot that is perking up filmmakers. There has been quality digital film cameras released already, many with resolutions so high your 1080p television cowers in a corner when they’re around. The Hyundai commercial is our first view of what the Phantom HD camera by Vision Research can do.

At a resolution of 2048x2048, the image produced is crisp and ultra sexy. Bigger isn’t always better though. As any videophile will tell you, film most often produces the best overall movies. This has to do with the mechanics of a camera, rather than the media.

Watch the slow motion in the commercial, and remember a digital camera is capturing that crisp picture. The Phantom HD camera is capable of shooting at extremely high speeds, exactly like the specialty cameras used so often for movies. By shooting at 1000 frames per second, when the footage is played back in real time it moves very slowly.
