The Latest iPhone Sorta News: Google Apps Are The Hype

The Latest iPhone Sorta News: Google Apps Are The Hype Since January we’ve gotten a lot of iPhone news that barely qualifies as such. Now with the Apple’s uber phone on its way sometime in the next month it must be time for the news to ramp up. This time we at least get a morsel, but the latest in the iPhone universe isn’t much more than hype and tease. It’s what we’ve come to expect, and at this point I just want the thing to be out so we can finally discover for ourselves if Apple has done something special. I’ll certainly be at my local Mac store to give it a whirl if nothing else.

The news this time around comes from Glenn Lurie, AT&T’s iPhone connoisseur. The Seattle Times sat with him to get details on the iPhone. Instead of real news there was some PR speak and a mildly interesting tidbit. Lurie was asked about the exorbitant price of the iPhone and he responded, ”…There are other things – you have the widgets, some of the Google applications that are coming – there are just so many things here that the price will not be an issue.” This would indicate that there are a number of Google widgets coming to the iPhone, not just the standard Maps. Having Gmail access on the iPhone would indeed be great, and it also indicates Apple is open to allowing third party apps on it’s golden device. The question still remains how much support will there be with Apple developing its own mail client?

The iPhone is undoubtedly going to launch to record numbers, but that will mean nothing if the second shipment of phones sits on shelves due to a lack of anything interesting to do with it. Allowing third party apps will appeal to a great many consumers, including those who are iffy about all this fancy Apple tech. According to the Seattle Times article the iPhone will gently coax consumers into purchasing an unlimited data package from AT&T, which seems reasonable considering its reported capabilities.
