As users and addicts know, TiVo has had some sort of music capability for a while now. Previously you could connect to other computers on your home network and listen to tunes located on those machines through your TiVo, as well as some online capabilities. Now TiVo has expanded those online capabilities with an announced partnership with digital music service Rhapsody.
TiVo service subscribers can use their TiVo to search for music from Rhapsody’s over four million song music catalog, browse music charts, and make use of streaming “radio stations” offered through the service.
There’s the downside, though: Rhapsody isn’t free. New TiVo subscribers will be given a 30-day free subscription to the music service. After that, users will pay $12.99 a month if they want to continue the service. That’s an additional thirteen-bucks a month on top of the standard TiVo subscription fees.
I like the idea of expanded music service through TiVo, but I’m a miser who doesn’t really want to shell out more money in order to get it. There are already too many free streaming radio stations online to justify paying another subscription fee. I love TiVo, but this is one service I won’t be taking advantage of.
