Qantas Bringing SMS And Email To Flights

Back in the 80s Qantas had the endorsement of Raymond Babbit, who declared them the safest airline. Now Qantas is adding “keeping in touch” to their repertoire. Starting later this year the airline will allow customers to send and receive SMS messages and emails. The program has been under testing for over two years.

The unrolling of the technology follows a trial that ran from April until this past January on a Boeing 767. Now passengers will be able to text “R U THERE?” over and over. Because there is such a perverse need for us to remain connected, despite the fact that we often ignore each other while in the same room.

The technology will begin appearing on select Boeing 767 and Airbus A330 jets for domestic flights. Voice communication is still not being offered.
