CBS Cancels Moonlight

By Kelly West: 2008-05-13 17:43:56

CBS Cancels Moonlight Back in January, the people voted Moonlight their Favorite New Drama Series at the People’s Choice Awards. Apparently, the love of “the people” wasn’t enough to get the ratings up on the series because as of this week, Moonlight is officially cancelled.

The Hollywood Reporter posted the news, stating that ratings for the series weren’t good for the show to begin with and only got worse when it came back after the strike. Some Moonlight fans may have seen this coming or at the very least, wanted to prevent it when they organized a blood drive, which was likely to be in the spirit of the whole vampire theme of the show. While the blood donations surely did some good for people in need, it doesn’t look like it helped the series out.

I fell behind on Moonlight after the strike but I thought given the loyal (and fairly vocal) fanbase, the series would be a lock to come back for a second season. Now it looks like it’s going down the same path as Jericho except in this case, I’m not sure an organized fan-response to the network is going to yield the same results. After CBS initially cancelled Jericho, the fans rallied together and begged for a second season. When Jericho returned, the show failed to improve in the ratings and was inevitably cancelled again. For that reason, it seems less likely that the network would be willing to give in and uncancel a series this time around.

Intelligently written, innovative, genuinely acted, creative, sensual, has pathos, and umm, awarding winning. . .yep sounds like all good reasons to cancel a TV. . . in the seas of outrageous and ridiculous shows, quality seems to suffer, sigh . . . hopefully it will be picked up by another smarter TV channel.

I was so upset when I read that CBS was going to cancel Moonlight. We could hardly wait for friday night so we could watch Moonlight. Hopefully another station will pick it up and we will be sure to tune CBS out.......

  1. Harpie Says:

Wow, bummer. Moonlight was getting better and better as the season went on. Hopefully another network picks it up and carries on. Decent actors, storylines seemed to be well written, and the music was really good too. Television stations should give shows a little more of a chance. Especially in this genre - these type of shows always seem to end up with a loyal fan base.

  1. Aaron Says:

Something is wrong with CBS. Did they ever think the strike could have something to do with the ratings being down.

  1. AMANDA Says:

This really sucks! There are a lot of upset fans. CBS will be very sorry!!!

  1. Fangrrl Says:

I am upset. Very upset about the cancellation of Moonlight. But in a way, not surprised. I sent emails all day long this week, too. Then I thought of something else I could write: more stories. I write stories all the time, and I'm always looking for a good theme or plot. True, it's a small consolation to only have MickBeth living on in my computer, but at least I will have full say on what they do. I'm not a blogger/poster/MySpace kind of person, so at the moment I don't plan to publish any of this. Who knows what kind of copyrights are involved.. I know Anne Rice has made it clear she despises "fan fiction." Maybe all of you more dedicated on-line types can dream up your own storylines.
I know I just can't keep dwelling on what's happened. It's just too depressing.

I have a lot more time to write now that I'm swearing off mainstream TV!

I don't even know what to say. I am absolutely infatuated with this show! I can honestly say that without a doubt, if CBS decides to cancel Moonlight, I will NEVER watch another CBS show. I believe they are making a huge mistake. This show is brilliant, with brilliant characters played by enormously talented actors. The show was put together so well, it has everything anyone could ever want...drama, horror, humor, and romance. I know of many people that are just as upset as I am about this news and have also said that they will no longer watch CBS if they cancel Moonlight. This show is brilliantly put together, with tremendous actors and great story lines. They are ruining something incredibly unique and wonderful. Alex O'Loughlin & Sophia Myles as well as every other character on this show is extremely talented and deserve to have their show. It makes me angry that they have kept ridiculous shows on CBS for a lot longer than necessary and are willing to write off something as amazing as this show, they really need to wake up and realize that they will regret cancelling this show, and will most likely lose a lot of viewers because of it! SAVE MOONLIGHT!

  1. Veronica Says:

CBS KEEPS MAKING MISTAKES... THAT WILL COST THEM LOTS OF VIEWERS..... WHERE ARE THESE PEOPLE GETTING THEIR RATINGS!! MOONLIGHT IS ON OF THE COOLEST SHOWS EVER. COME ON ABS OR NBC, SHOW YOUR VIEWERS SOME LOVE. SINCE CBS, ONCE AGAIN, HAS TURNED THEIR BACKS TO THEIR VIEWERS. THIS IS SO UPSETTING. I REFUSE TO WATCH ANOTHER SHOW ON CBS, UNTIL THEY GET SOME SMART PEOPLE IN THEIR STAFF!!! MOONLIGHT ROCKS! CBS SUCKS!!!

  1. Sarah B. Says:

Moonlight cancelled? Does CBS just hate its viewers? Are is the EYE completely blind?
Last word on the street is that the sets have NOT been torn down yet. This might be good news. I am tempted to say that CBS does not deserve Moonlight- hopefully (HOPEFULLY!) another network will renew it. But, everyone, even CBS, deserves a shot at redemption.

  1. Bebe M Says:

This is the perfect example of why the nelson rating system needs to go!
It dosn't work anymore nobody watches t.v. like that. I watch my shows online or I D.V.R. them Its just so much easier that way. I think that there are more people watching the show then the nelson ratings are showing them. CBS and the other networks need to enter the 21st century and don't always trust that obsolete system there using now.

  1. Von Says:

How can they do this??? Another great show thrown by the wayside! CBS, stop thinking with your a***s and start thinking with your brains! I sincerley hope another station will pick it up!! Your loss CBS!

    Hopping Mad Moonlight Fan!

  1. Kelsey Says:

I Love Moonlight and I refuse to say it's over! We fans love this show and what the network was saying about "Low ratings" is a bunch of crap. 8 million viewers isn't low, espicially on a friday night! For a different (and much smarter network, I might add) 8 million viewers is plenty and if they gave it TIME, the fan base would GROW! Of course Nina Tassler (the woman who canceled Moonlight >:( ) and the rest of CBS is going to want you to believe that the Jericho fiasco caused this, making us go after the Jericho fans. DON'T do that, the Jericho fans are not to blame, that two-faced retard, Nina Tassler is the one to blame. So as a closing word, to all those 8 million angry Moonlight fans out there, I say this... STAND UP AND SAVE YOUR SHOW IN ANY WAY YOU CAN!!! AND...
VAMPIRE SOLIDARITY!!! RAH! RAH! RAH! FIGHT FOR OUR SHOW AND GIVE CBS THE HARDEST TIME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Mary Jane Says:

I am extremely upset upon hearing Moonlight has been cancelled. My husband and I could not wait for Friday nights to watch one of our favorite shows. Shame on you CBS! Maybe USA will be smart and pick it up like they did the Monk series. Pretty soon USA will be the only station to watch!

  1. Sarah Says:

I am so upset to hear that Moonlight is being canceled. There are few shows on any more that are truly worth watching and this was one of them. I can't believe it is over!

  1. cynthia Says:

I cannot believe that they cancelled moonlight. I look forward to my Friday nights on CBS. Moonlight to me was getting better. I do hope CBS would reconsider and bring Moonlight back. Or that some other station picks it up.

  1. Violet_Blaze Says:

I was gutted when i found out Moonlight was to be canceled, i was hooked on Mick from the first episode, its not just the American fan base that is to be left hanging what about us fans in th UK, SAVE MOONLIGHT

  1. Jennifer Says:

I totally don't understand, why cbs would cancel Moonlight. Don't give thought that we didn't have anything worth my tv viewing for months, because we're bitching about how much they get paid....
Now because of that whole thing a really good program gets the axe.
Just because moonlight was on at nine,I started watching ghost whisper before hand. Please rethink this....America demands our Mick St.John...DAMN IT!!!

  1. Moonlight_forever_14 Says:

Moolight forever. Moonlight forever. Moonlight forever. Moonlight forever. Moonlight forever. Moonlight Moonlight Moonlight Moonlight Moonlight Moonlight!!!!!!!!! Why did you guys have to cancel it? It's like deleteing CSI:Miami!!! Moonlight forever Moonlight forever!!!!!!!!! I want this show to have a second season. This show helps me shut out my issues. it makes me feel happy. please will u guys have a *ucken season 2. If you go on youtube people are starting to upload moonlight. DOn't you guys get it. To me whenever a tv show is on youtube. that means this show has to be cool!!! im a fourteen year old and i watch this show. come on how many fourteen year olds wtach this show. CBS you never know. People want this show again!!! Make it happen. It's like making Bush target a bomb to the US!!!!!

  1. Betty Says:

I am so upset Moonlight was cancelled. I am hoping another network will pick it up.

  1. bryan B Says:

Is is just me, or are the days of well-written, adult-driven shows gone? "Reality" shows are about as exciting as an infected toenail. They get spoon-fed to the viewers so much that the over-saturation leaves one wondering why ANYONE watches basic television anymore.

Moonlight had great writing, good storylines (you could watch one episode or every episode and understand), and super cool actors that believed in what they were doing. First off, Friday night is the kiss of death for ANY show. Why not move it to Thursday night before CSI so it could develop a fanbase? CBS really screwed this one up...hopefull, another network will show the fans that this show deserves to see the light of day.

  1. Carol Says:

I'm so disappointed in CBS for cancelling Moonlight, it's a GREAT!!!!
show. The show has everthing, romance, horror, comedy and a wonderful cast. Did CBS ever stop to think that the strike could have had something to do with the ratings? or is Nielson not giving it the credit it deserves? I say get rid of Nielson and listen to the people for once, CBS seems to forget that it's the people that count. I certainly hope that another more intelligent station will pick it up or that CBS will move it to another night, that's if any of them have a brain.

    SAVE MOONLIGHT!!!!!!!

  1. H Says:

It amazes me the stupid comedy shows CBS will support, but not the dramas. For once someone got it right when it comes to vampires! The show was fun, exciting, sad, serious, and down right humorous. I can't even being to explain how disappointed I am or was when I heard Moonlight was canceled. I watched the re-runs, I even watched it on the computer. I found myself actually looking forward to moonlight on Friday nights. Now all I have to look forward too is more comedy shows, and reality shows. Not all of us like to live in the reality of reality shows. Some of us like the escape of all the BS of peoples every day annoying behaviors especially when we work with or live with people that are like those on the reality shows.
Give Mick & Beth a chance! They had how many shows and won an award. If that doesn't tell you that it was popular among viewers then what will? Save Mick & Beth...CBS isn't the same without them.

  1. Amber Ouellet Says:

I am extremley mad about CBS decision to cancel Moonlight and any of you people that come to this website I want you to join me on the decision to boycott that station maybe then they will finally see what they are missing. I have been a faithfull Moonlight fan like many of you and it bairley got a chance to show just how good it was. I mean CBS is just numb they win a award and they cancel it. Well there are a few channels out there that want to take over the show like TNT, FX, Sci-Fi, and USA so keep your eyes peeled just because CBS is stupid doesn't mean another network won't see how great it is and pick it up. So don't lose hope.

  1. Mimi Says:

I was really upset to hear Moonlight was cancelled! It was a totally awesome show, but CBS was too incompetent to realize that! I mean like, Moonlight had everythinggg. It had romance, horror, humor, and drama! It was a very intriguing show to watch and i quite looked forward to watching it on Friday nights!! Im only 13 and i've realized how great this show is! CBS is very idiotic to cancel this show and i hope some other, intellectual tv station will pick up this show and keep the glory going.Because i dont think anyone wants to watching those mind-numbing,retarded comedy and reality shows!!

SAVE MOONLIGHT!!! CBS SUCKS!!! MOONLIGHT ROCKS 4EVER!!!
