On tonight’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance, rather than cutting things down to a clean hour or at most, an hour and a half, they kept the show at two hours and let each couple dance two songs. I guess this is a good thing for the dancers because they get a second chance to show off their moves and hopefully win people over. But I think I’d prefer if they’d wait until it got down to five couples to do this. Fourteen dances is a lot to take in in one episode.
Cat wins the prize for weirdest outfit tonight. Her dress looked like it was made out of one of those tuxedo t-shirts. She still managed to look stunning somehow, which is impressive. And speaking of impressive, Comfort was on fire tonight! I wondered if a new partner might be just what she needed to really step it up and sure enough, it seems to have done the trick. The girl definitely has more range than I initially gave her credit for.
There’s a lot to cover so without further filler other than to mention that hip hop choreographers Napoleon and Tabitha were in the guest-judge chairs tonight, on to the performances:
Jessica and Will First Dance: Jive Song: “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie” – Five Guys Named Moe (Original Broadway Cast)
The routine is fun with lots of twirling and kicking but it doesn’t totally flow. It’s almost like they’re focusing too much on the steps and not enough on just dancing together. On the plus side, they do pull off some great flippy moves.
Judges: Tabitha says she felt the fight in there. Napoleon says it took a bit for it to get going but they nailed the lift. Mary says there were missed connections left and right out there. Will was getting the basic technique and Jessica was “not quite there.” Nigel says Will had a great bounce to it but Jessica’s weight was in the wrong place. He adds that the retractions were good for Will but a little lazy from Jessica.
Second Dance: Lyrical Jazz Song: “Alone” – Heart
Love the song choice. This routine is much better than their first number. They are definitely making up for their lack of connection in the first song. There’s passion, grace and lots of rolling around on the floor. The only thing that misses the mark is Jessica smiling at the end, which seems more playful than it should be given the mood of the dance. Whatever points I take off for that are given back thanks to Will’s shirtlessness.
Judges: Tabitha says Will had nice lines. Napoleon was impressed by the first leap in the routine. Napoleon adds that he feels Jessica is holding Will down a bit. Ouch! Jessica looks like she’s fighting back tears. Mary says something about flame and fire and then screams. She remarks on both of their passion and says they had the whole package. Nigel asks the audience who wants to dance with Will and everyone cheers. He says it was fabulous but this was a duet and tells Jessica she needs to stop worrying about herself and realize what a great dancer she is. He compliments her on the lifts.
Comfort and Thayne Dance: Broadway Song: “Cool” – Bernstein and Sondheim
Comfort’s showing off her graceful side and Thayne seems to have the act down. When they join up on stage there’s a real connection between these two that I didn’t expect to see. Major chemistry. These two definitely pulled this one off.
Judges: Tabitha says they’re a good match and she was lovin’ it. Napoleon liked some of the moves. He adds that he liked Comfort’s flirtiness and Thayne played it cool, which was nice. Mary agrees that it’s a great partnership with these two and adds that she’s so proud of Comfort. She says it could’ve been “bigger” but coming from hip-hop, she really brought it on. She adds that she was expecting Thayne to be good in this number and he was. Nigel says this was real, legit Broadway choreography and this routine didn’t have the bursting passion that should’ve been there. He says it wasn’t good enough.
Second Dance: Smooth Waltz Song: “HovArek Sarer Jan” – New Age Armenia
Interesting song choice. It’s like music set to a breeze. Once again, Comfort shows off her grace as she flies into Thayne’s arms and the passion is there. These two complement each other really well and it makes me wish they’d have been paired up from the start. They both connected with the music and each other nicely.
Judges: Napoleon says he’s not a waltz expert but he loved that. Tabitha says she sees a nice partnership there but she’s not sure about Thayne. She says his last moment he looked at the camera and it felt phony. Mary says she is a waltz expert and she loved it. She says it could’ve had more power in some places but otherwise it was good. She tells Comfort she was like a dancing butterfly tonight. Nigel compliments the choreographer and then talks about the lifts, saying it was tremendous. He says Thayne carried it well and Comfort looks so beautiful tonight. He remarks on Comfort taking her piercing out and changing her look, turning herself into a ballroom queen.
Kourtni and Matt First Dance: Hip-Hop Song: “How Do I Breath” – Mario
The choreography is good but it seems a bit too loose and a lot of the routine involves the two of them dancing side by side and not so much together. There’s one semi-cool lift but that’s about it. This one was just kind of blah for me.
Judges: Tabitha starts out talking about the groove of this style of hip-hop. Napoleon says this wouldn’t fly in a hip hop competition. Mary says even though the routine was slow it still should make us feel something and it didn’t for her. Nigel says he doesn’t know if it was the choreography or if it was the dancers but it didn’t sit for him and didn’t grab him. He says it was like hip hop on sleeping pills. Couldn’t have put it better myself, Nigel.
Second Dance: Mambo Song: “Ban-Con-Tim” – Super All-Star
Kourtni’s legs are all over the place in this routine but it works. In a way though, it kind of steals the attention away from Matt a bit too much. In fact, at times it feels like Matt’s barely there.
Judges: Tabitha says there were hot and cold moments. Napoleon wanted to see a bit more movement from Matt. Mary says Kourtni was hot out there but she didn’t feel the chemistry between them and parts of it were too bouncy. Nigel says it needed to be sharper and he thinks Matt needed to be more macho. When he gets booed by the audience he explains to the crowd that they’re trying to improve these dancers and not to boo good comments. I’m pretty sure he just judged the audience, there. They of course responded by booing.
Chelsie and Mark First Dance: Jazz Song: “Kiss Kiss” – Holly Vance
This is a snappy number and the two seem to be having fun with it. It’s flirty and fun. The camera angles are actually kind of distracting though so it’s kind of hard to really just watch them. This is one of those routines that has them running all around the stage, so it’d be nice if the cameras just panned back and allowed us to watch rather than forcing us to chase them. Anyway, they danced it well but I don’t think it’ll be memorable for me and I don’t really blame the dancers for that.
Judges: Tabitha and Napoleon say they have a good chemistry and they’re able to tell a story with their dances. Mary loved it. She says they haven’t taken a wrong turn yet. She dumps a bucket of praise on each of them and then congratulates them. Nigel says they were magic together and the routine worked.
Second Dance: Foxtrot Song: “It’s My Life” – Paul Anka
Chelsie’s wearing a lot of dress for this one. Seriously the thing is long, feather-trimmed and very blue. Oh, the dancing – right. Chelsie’s in her element but Mark impresses me with his ability to move her around the stage with a nice combination of grace and power.
Judges: Tabitha comments on Chelsie dancing with a feather in her mouth for part of the routine. Napoleon says they look like they just love to dance and they’re showing America that. Mary says there was some hard stuff in there and they pulled it off. Nigel says he felt Mark was a little uncomfortable tonight or that he used his feet as well as he could have.
Kherington and Twitch First Dance: Paso Doble Song: “Malaguena” – Brian Setzer ’68 Comeback Special
The routine starts out with Kherington up on Twitch’s shoulders. They’re both dressed like sexy matadors and start out the number waving capes around. They eventually drop the capes and this is where things really get going. The dance is almost angry but at the same time, it’s kind of hot. Once again these two really connected on stage.
Judges: Napoleon tells Twitch the matador in him came out and Kherington was demanding with the cape. Tabitha says it was a slow build and Twitch didn’t embrace his character until halfway through. Napoleon says the rest of the way through it was money. Mary adds that it was full of passion. She seems kind of lukewarm about it though. Nigel says Twitch was wearing his shoulders like earrings and he needs to lower his shoulders. He adds that Kherington demanded a lot out of him and he’s not sure he gave her everything she wanted.
Second Dance: Contemporary Song: “Dreaming with a Broken Heart” – John Mayer
Twitch borrowed Will’s shirtless look for this second number, which isn’t a bad thing. His abs – wow. The routine involves both of them dancing on and around a bed. Rose petals are being thrown about and there seems to be a bit of torment in the story of this dance. Both are totally committed to it, which is what really sells the act. Though the routine seems to show off more of their acting abilities than their dancing but that’s not such a bad thing.
Judges: Tabitha says it was awesome-awesome-awesome. Napoleon says there were so many great moments in it. Mary says it was powerful, dynamic and the story was believable. She loved it. Nigel jokes about Mia Michaels being inspired by his relationship with her for this routine and that gets laughs (which is a nice change from all the boos he’s been getting all night). Nigel says they were committed to it and that these two are in his top three couples.
Katee and Joshua First Dance: Contemporary Song: “Hometown Glory” – Adele
Both are dressed in black and the dance starts off kind of slow and detached, with both of them looking ahead. There’s a lot of twitching and jerking, which makes the already dark mood of the dance even darker. Joshua does a great job of catching Katee every time she jumps, leaps and lunges at him. Both of them were totally into character in this one and as always, they connected well. Their facial expressions and moves matched the music perfectly.
Judges: Tabitha remarks on one of the jumps, saying it was ridiculous. Napoleon agrees and says it’s so much more than dancing and these guys get that. Mary loved it and tells Katee she was amazing tonight. Nigel says it takes complete faith in her partner to do what Katee did and absolute concentration and strength to do what Josh did. He says it proves to him that these two are one of the three or four couples this season which will make this season outstanding when history is written. Hopefully the people writing about this in the history books are getting all that down.
Second Dance: West Coast Swing Song: “Shake It” – Brother Yusef
I’m pretty sure Katee’s pink pants are actually glowing. I’m not sure how if I think the song matches the dance though. There’s something about it that doesn’t totally go together for me but regardless, these two look hot and Katee does a fantastic job, as does Josh (as always).
Judges: Napoleon says he thinks back to Vegas and how they almost didn’t keep Katee. He says that would’ve been unfortunate for America. Mary says she loved it and compliments Benji for his routine. Nigel says this isn’t their style but they both have the ability to adapt to styles. He also compliments Joshua on the way he flew through the air at the end, saying he could be in the next James Bond movie with that one.
Courtney and Gev Dance: Hip Hop Song: “Lights, Camera, Action! – Mr. Cheeks
This routine is upbeat and a bit more tougher than some of the previous hip hop we’ve seen but while they have the steps down, it’s nothing outstanding. Maybe I’m just not into this style of hip hop but I don’t feel like this routine really challenges them or shows off their abilities.
Judges: Napoleon says he doesn’t think Gev kept up with Courtney. Tabitha praises Courtney as well. Mary says Gev didn’t really hit it hard enough and her eyes kept being drawn to Courtney. Nigel says it was fun and funky but it was more funkier than hip hop.
Second Dance: Broadway Song: “New York, New York” – Bernstein, Comden and Green
The style of dance is very 50’s-ish and energetic. I can’t say that this dance is doing much more to emphasize their abilities than their first dance did. Though it does seem like Gev is standing out a lot more in this one than he did the first time around. Will it keep them safe for this week? I’m not so sure about that.
Judges: Tabitha says she thought there were some down times in the song when she wishes they would’ve come down a bit with the music. Napoleon says he thinks Gev found his niche with this Broadway routine. Mary says she thought it was great, strong, matching and completely believable. Nigel says these two slip under the radar and they get through really well. He says this style is perfect for them. He adds that Courtney’s round kicks weren’t strong enough but he likes how the choreography really used the stage.
Best couple of the night: Comfort and Thayne
Favorite Dancers over all: Joshua, Katee, Twitch and Kherington
Predicted to make the bottom 3: Kourtni and Matt (again)
