TV Recap: The Amazing Race- Do You Like American Candy?

By Matt Norris: 2008-10-06 00:35:37
TV Recap: The Amazing Race- Do You Like American Candy? This week starts off pretty much like last week ended with me wishing physical pain on Terence’s effeminate ass. Nick/Starr are the first team to leave at 4:07am and the first clue tells them to fly to Fortaleeza, Brazil and then take a taxi to the small town of Cumbuco for the next clue. Ken/Tina leave second and were followed by my favorite girl team Terence/Sarah. This episode quickly makes a turn for the better when the taxi driver “accidentally” slams the tailgate onto Terence’s face. HAHAHA. Sorry, I probably should be a bit more professional than that. The best part was when Terence decided to yell at Sarah about it when she asked what happened. Sarah, just like the rest of America, could not see the blood that Terence claimed was oozing from his NON-bleeding head.

Nick/Starr and Ken/Tina get to the airport and began searching for the earliest flight. Eventually, they find an airline with one seat open on a 6:45 am. At some point, the airline, CBS, or the almighty Phil decided that a larger airplane was needed. Tina felt that her demands to the airline caused this immaculate plane switch. Now, it is fine that she thought her loud/whiny voice somehow caused a new plane to be ordered. I’m pretty sure that voice chased her husband into the arms of another woman so maybe it did cause an airline to buckle under her demands. However, the fact that she went and told every team how they should be thankful for her getting on the earlier flight was a bit much though.

Every team checks in and are told that there are not any assigned seats. Tina believed her benevolence should grant Ken and her first-on-the-plane access. Tina heads to the front of the line although Mark/Bill and Terence/Sarah had made it to the gate first. Terence, still smarting from his “injury” decides to raise his voice at Tina with Ken nearby. Ken, shockingly, never raises his voice but calmly expresses what many of us thought: He could kill Terence and the world would rejoice. It doesn’t take long for Terence to come to his senses though and he apologizes to all. Ken kisses Terence on the head and said it was worth it since Terence finally smiled. Ken seems like a really decent guy. This is just one of many things in this episode which showed my first impressions of many teams were completely off base.

After the plane lands, all teams run like mad from the plane looking for the exit. This causes mass confusion for most teams and we have a shakeup. Terence/Sarah are the first team to grab a taxi and get to Cumbuco. The first clue instructs the teams to drive a dune buggy down the beach to Barrace D Mandel which is Portuguese for “small decrepit building” apparently. Kelly/Christy and Toni/Dallas arrive next with Anthony and Stephanie in last place. The next clue is the detour. The detour allows teams to choose between one of two tasks. This time it is “Beach it” or “Docket”. Beach it involves choosing a two man team and pushing a boat across the beach on logs until you get to the water. “Docket” sends teams to a shipyard where teams must search for a numerically named container that is mixed upon hundreds or thousands other containers. Teams will have to match up a numerical code on the clue to a computer list. Naturally all teams decide to do the “Beach it” except for the nerds, Mark/Bill.

Terence/Sarah finish the detour first and get the next clue. The clue instructs teams to get a taxi and drive to Parque de Vaquejada. Unfortunately, Terence doesn’t notice the arrow pointing to the taxis so he decides to wander aimlessly down the beach. Nick/Starr arrived fourth to the detour but finished quickly. Unlike Terence, they noticed the BIG RED ARROW saying “Taxi Parking” and took off.

Around the same time, Mark/Bill use their nerd skillz to find the container and they surprisingly move into first place slightly ahead of Nick/Starr. Nick/Starr pass Terence and Sarah walking around on the road trying to find a taxi. Shortly after Terence suggests they go grab some ice scream, Ken/Tina pass Terence and Sarah as they try to flag down occupied taxis. Toni and Dallas decide to be good Samaritans and let Terence and Sarah know they need to head back to the beach.

Back at the beach, Kelly and Christy were actually the 2nd team to get to the detour but confuse themselves over the stipulations of both detours. They start digging into the sand for the container which was the focus of the “Docket” option. This causes them to drop to sixth place once they realized they were failing miserably at reading. A quick recap of the teams after the detour:

1. Mark/Bill
2. Nick/Starr
3. Ken/Tina
4. Toni/Dallas
5. Andrew/Dan
6. Kelly/Christy
7. Aja/Ty
8. Marisa/Brooke
9. Terence/Sarah
10. Anthony/Stephanie

Once teams arrive at Parque de Vaquejada, they are to participate in a roadblock. A roadblock is a challenge that only one person in the team can participate in. At this roadblock, the team member will scour the 600ft wall to find the name of the next destination: Cidade Da Crianca. There is nothing tricky by this clue. They just have to find the one name that might be the city name and write it down. It doesn’t take long for the team members to realize that the best strategy to this freaking lame roadblock is to just write down every damn thing they see on the wall. Bill comes to this conclusion first and Tina noticed this and did the same. Toni/Dallas and Andrew/Dan arrive next with Toni and Andrew choosing to do the roadblocks. Finally, Bill says the correct city name and they race to their cars to head to the pit stop. Tina gets it right soon afterwards and they are on the heels of Mark and Bill. Unfortunately for the Nerds, their taxi driver isn’t as fast as Ken and Tina’s. A foot race ensues to the pit stop but Ken and Tina pull out first place and win two all terrain vehicles as their reward.

Quick recap of the teams up to this point:

1. Ken/Tina-pit stop
2. Mark/Bill-pit stop
3. Toni-searching the wall
4. Andrew-searching the wall
5. Nick-searching the wall
6. Aja-searching the wall
7. Kelly/Christy-searching the wall
8. Marisa/Brooke-searching the wall
9. Sarah-searching the wall
10. Anthony-searching the wall

Christy finds the city name next but she and Kelly forgot to tell their taxi to wait and began walking up and down the streets looking for a taxi. This is the second major blunder caused by them failing to read the clue correctly. Aja is the next to correctly name the town soon followed by Sarah and Toni. I’ll give Sarah credit. She is pretty adept at these challenges. Finally Kelly/Christy realize their taxi is parked next to all the other taxis and they are off too.

Another quick recap:

1. Ken/Tina-pit stop
2. Mark/Bill-pit stop
3. Terence/Sarah-pit stop
4. Aja/Ty–pit stop
5. Toni/Dallas-pit stop
6. Nick/Starr- pit stop
7. Kelly/Christy-pit stop

The rest of the teams are NOT busy trying to complete their MENSA membership applications. Marisa and Anthony were busy whining that they couldn’t read Spanish and Pig Latin, respectively. Andrew finally spoke for the first time in two episodes and actually got the city name correct pushing him ahead of the last two teams. Marisa answers the city correctly followed by the laziest man ever to appear on TAR, Anthony. You would have thought he was trying to find super ultra pads with wings by the way he stared at the wall. How hard would it be to see where folks were writing down things and um.. copy that stuff down? I don’t care if you don’t speak “Pig Latin” or not, it isn’t that hard to figure out what could possibly be city names on the wall.

The final teams to check in were Anthony/Dan in 8th, Marisa/Brooke in 9th, and Anthony/Stephanie in a distant 10th. It was a pretty pathetic performance by a team that I had hopes for before the show started (More on my ignorant predictions later). With Anthony/Stephanie eliminated, we are left with nine teams for next week. Thank God. It’s hard to keep up with this many teams.

Prediction Analysis: Should I even bother keeping up with it anymore? Hahaha. Although I admitted my predictions were completely based on ignorance, it still sucks when you see a team go home that you thought would make it far. Next week, I believe I will formulate new predictions for my three readers to mock.

Episode Summary: This episode didn’t lessen my dislike of Terence but I will give his team credit for not giving up. Marisa and Brooke aren’t receiving a lot of screen time but they actually seem better than I predicted. So far all the teams seem to be really working together pretty well and overcoming weaknesses Ken and Sarah are doing a great job of dealing with their moody partners. So far the weakest teams have went home which only leads to a better show for us all.

Weekly Winners/Losers: I’ll give the “Most Impressive Team” award to Mark and Bill for choosing the more difficult of the detour tasks and still finishing it first. They are working hard as a team and overcoming their physical drawbacks. The “Oh I Can’t Believe He Said That” award goes to Bill for actually thinking that quoting Yoda on national television, voice and all, was a great thing to do at that moment. Maybe he’ll get a guest spot on the Big Bang Theory for his shout out to nerds everywhere. The last award goes to Tina and it is the “Shaddup already” award. First she ticks off every team with her demands of tribute for the great flight. Then she accuses her husband of yelling when he just asks her in a talking tone to “come on, honey”. She then threatens to go the wrong way just to spite him. Tina, just listen to Ken and you guys can win it all. Keep running your mouth and the next time we see you will be on Divorce Court or Celebrity Botox.
