90210 Cancelled After Season 5 Ends Run

Another era of drama in Beverly Hills is coming to an end. The CW has pulled the plug on 90210, confirming today that the current fifth season of the series will be the final one, and the season ender will in fact be the series finale, as well.

THR is reporting that 90210 has been struggling in the ratings, and hit a series low on February 18th with a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That’s not really that much below the season average of 0.4 in that demo, which pushes up to only 0.7 with DVR reruns added in. Those numbers should make it pretty clear why the CW is calling it quits.

90210, based on the 90s hit series Beverly Hills, 90210, featured a new crop of privileged youth in the posh zip code, along with appearances from original cast members like Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth. The series actually did better than I would have predicted when it made its reappearance, but seems to have hit the wall this season. Even guest stars like Olympic favorite Ryan Lochte and the upcoming acting debut of Michael Jackson’s son Prince Michael Jackson (who will appear in the finale) couldn’t save the show from cancellation. At least the network will go out with a guest star no other TV show has seen yet, which could potentially boost the finale’s ratings.

Among the series with better luck at the CW are Supernatural, Arrow, and The Vampire Diaries, which have all been renewed. 90210’s swan song will air on May 13th at 9 p.m. EST.
