How Marvel Will Bring Back Coulson Back To Life For Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

It has been a major mystery surrounding the upcoming television drama Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ever since it was revealed that Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson would return. As most of you will remember, the secret agent was killed by Loki in a little movie we like to call The Avengers. Somehow, though, the character is due to come back, and SlashFilm just revealed the secret to Coulson’s resurrection.

Want to know it? It’s a MAJOR spoiler, so stop reading if you don’t want to know how Coulson finds his way back to S.H.I.E.L.D. in time for the TV program.

Still with us? SlashFilm quotes a source who says that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury convinced Coulson to fake his own death to inspire the members of the Avengers to band together and take down Loki. The site actually says that Coulson “was forced to hold his breath as part of the ruse,” and that it’s possible Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) was likely in on it. They say that Fury moved Coulson to a remote location until “things died down” – meaning that the Avengers had cleaned up New York City – and has been reinstated in time for the start of the television show.

As lame as that reason is (and believe me, Coulson holding his breath is about as lame as it gets), this at least explains the timeline of the new show. It won’t be a prequel, with a still-alive Coulson. It can run concurrently with the Phase Two films from Marvel Studios, and bridge the gaps between the standalone films as we build to The Avengers 2 and beyond.
