Defiance Renewed For Season 2 On Syfy

Great news has come down the pipeline from Syfy this morning. Fans of the network’s new show, Defiance, should be pleased to learn the network has announced that the humans, Irathients, Castithans and more occupying the town of Defiance will be back for a second season. The network is renewing Defiance for 13 more episodes, set to air in 2014.

Next year seems like a pretty long time to wait for new episodes, but luckily Defiance is only four episodes into its freshman season. If you haven’t caught the drama, it follows an unlikely father/daughter duo of human Nolan (Grant Bowler) and Irathient Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) who happen upon an town called Defiance, created in an area that used to be St. Louis. The series has a bit of a Wild West feel to it and each week Nolan, Irisa and a slew of Defiance townspeople must try to maintain relations despite different customs and fight off any enemies that might threaten the town. The show can be a little formulaic, but when it’s on, it stands among some of Syfy’s best.

Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels this way. After achieving pretty good premiere numbers, Defiance has been doing well in the ratings during its timeslot on cable, and has pulled in the best numbers for a show in the 18-49 demo as well in total viewers during its timeslot over the last few weeks. Of course, Defiance doesn’t have a ton of competition on cable on Mondays; regardless, the show is continuing to prove that it is a program viewers will seek out Syfy for—which is a hit the network has desperately needed. If you get the opportunity to catch the program during Syfy’s horribly named Powerful Mondays programming block, I’d seriously suggest giving the show a shot.

Syfy’s Defiance airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET.
