Andy Samberg Will Host Next Year's Emmy Awards

The Emmy Awards have seen a slew of different hosts over the years, and this year, Fox is giving a network favorite a shot at hosting the TV-related awards ceremony. That’s right, Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor Andy Samberg has signed on to host the prestigious awards show. I hope that means we can expect some musical moments, as well as an appearance from B99 co-star Terry Crews.

Fox made the announcement this morning, noting that Samberg is already an Emmy winner, which apparently gives him the credentials to host the gig. The man does have some experience with live programming, having worked on Saturday Night Live between 2005 and 2012. (He also recently appeared in the SNL 40 special.) During his time on the series, he showed a penchant for goofy but memorable comedy, which might be a bit much for the Emmys stage but certainly makes for an amusing response to the announcement. Here’s what Samberg had to say about getting hired.

Buckle your seat belts, Emmy viewers! Like, in general you should buckle your seat belts in your car. In fact, even if you’re not an Emmy viewer, you should buckle your seat belt. It can be dangerous on the road. Also, if you’re not an Emmy viewer, you should strongly consider becoming one this year, because I’m hosting, and it’s gonna be a wild ride. So buckle your seat belts.

I honestly have no idea what to expect from a buttoned-up Samberg. The funnyman will hopefully be able to keep the show running on time thanks to his SNL skills, but he’s definitely an acquired taste for some factions of the population. To give the Emmys some credit, however, at least they are trying something new by giving Samberg a shot.

Over the last several years, we’ve seen a slew of big names run the Emmys. Other Saturday Night Live alum Seth Meyers did a fine enough job last year, and other recent ceremonies featured Jimmy Kimmel, recent Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris and Jane Lynch as the headliners. Fox is definitely taking a chance by handing Samberg the mic, but a lot of the other recent hosts didn’t have a ton of awards experience, either, and did quite well on a live stage. At least we know he can rock a suit.

In addition, the network is definitely making certain people know the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards are airing on Fox by adding Samberg into the mix. Still, the 2015 Emmy Awards won’t air for quite some time. The report this morning indicates the 67th Emmys will hit the schedule on Sunday, September 20. They’ll run live, starting at 8 p.m. ET or 5 p.m. PT (Central time can do the math), depending on where you live in the US. Nominees will be announced on July 16, 2015. Stay tuned to find out whether or not your favorite shows will be nominated this year.
