Dominion Canceled, Will Not Get Season 3

Syfy has done a good job in the recent past of building up their original scripted programming slate, with more (hopefully) quality series coming soon. But not everything is meant to last forever, and the genre-based network has decided not to move forward with the fantasy drama Dominion. A higher power thought about it and decided he or she was done with this story.

While news of Dominion’s cancelation may not be shocking, considering the series wasn’t exactly drawing huge numbers, it’s still a major blow, since Season 2 just ended at the beginning of the month. And it was an episode made by someone, creator Vaun Wilmott, who seemed to have no negative thoughts about the show’s chances of getting a Season 3 from Syfy, as it featured a major death and a pair of cliffhangers to keep audiences talking afterward. Now we’ll only be talking about what might have been.

Syfy execs made it clear they thought everyone involved did a “tremendous job” in turning the 2010 fantasy film Legion into a TV show, according to Deadline. Still, it’s hard to argue with the fact that the show’s audience, while strong, wasn’t large. Dominion never again saw the numbers of its pilot episode, which was watched by 1.9 million people when it debuted in June 2014, and Season 2 has been worse than ever, with the season-now-series finale only drawing a little over 700,000 people. The show is probably fairly expensive to put together, and its general lack of critical appeal was another good indicator that Syfy should probably back away from it.

Let us all take a moment to say goodbye to Dominion while also humming a Christmas carol by watching the video below.

Dominion was set 25 years after the events of the film and focused on Christopher Egan’s “Chosen One” Alex and Tom Wisdom’s Michael the Archangel as humanity’s saviors in a war against Carl Beukes’ Gabriel the Archangel and his army. This was the only religion-tinged show of its kind on Syfy’s schedule – Olympus is close, admittedly – but the show’s battles and heavy drama are familiar to anyone who gets down with the network’s lineup, which will also enter 2016 without Continuum, or Haven. Luckily, we’re still getting second seasons of Z Nation, 12 Monkeys, Killjoys and Dark Matter.
