The Gilmore Girls Revival Just Signed Its First New Cast Member

I love it when fandoms collide. Amy Sherman-Palladino has long been in the TV business, but she has created two shows that fans really love: Gilmore Girls and Bunheads. Now that the former is being revived, it only makes sense that she might bring in actors and actresses from the latter show. That’s right, kids, Sutton Foster is going to be in Netflix’s upcoming season of Gilmore Girls.

Sutton foster

The former Bunheads actress can currently be seen on TV Land’s Younger, so it’s particularly awesome that she could find the time to film on the set of Gilmore Girls. (Younger only films 12 episodes a season, so maybe it wasn’t that hard to find the time, but still.) THR confirmed the news of Sutton Foster’s casting, but currently no one seems to know much about her character. My dream casting would have to be to have Foster still playing Bunheads character Michelle who is taking over Miss Patty’s dance studio in the revival, but since Kelly Bishop and others were on both shows that might just be too wild. I digress.

The coolest thing about Sutton Foster’s casting is that she is the first person who has been added to the Gilmore Girls revival who wasn’t a part of the original cast. So far, we know that Alexis Bledel and Lauren Graham will both be back, which is obvious, as they are the Gilmore gals. Kelly Bishop, who plays Lorelei’s mom and Rory’s grandmother, has also signed on, as have Scott Patterson, Matt Czuchry, Liza Weil, Milo Ventimiglia, Sean Gunn, Keiko Agena and Yanic Truesdale. Word’s still out on Supernatural and former Gilmore Girls actor Jared Padalecki and others. Edward Herrmann sadly passed away a year ago, and the show plans to include his character Richard’s death. Foster is the first confirmed non-original to the cast.

Netflix frequently keeps a ton of details about its new shows under wraps, but we do know a bit about what to expect from the new Gilmore Girls series. Four episodes will be available, and each episode will focus on our favorite characters during a particular season. Because of this setup, during the span of all four episodes, one year will pass. Four episodes doesn’t seem like a lot, but each is expected to run 90 minutes, so they will be more like mini movies than TV episodes, anyway.

Gilmore Girls always had a large ensemble cast, which means there are likely going to be a whole lot of other names added to the production in the weeks to come. We’ll keep you updated every step of the way. In the meantime, check out what the streaming service has coming up with our Netflix premiere schedule.
