A Major Vampire Diaries Character Is Leaving

For those people who thought the CW’s The Vampire Diaries couldn’t go on without Elena, they’ve been shown that the show can indeed survive without one of the leads. Now, another major character is leaving, and the fantasy drama will have to deal with filling the story vacuum that will occur once again. Super witch Bonnie Bennett will no longer appear on the show, since actress Kat Graham has decided to leave the Friday night drama.

Kat Graham spoke with Us Weekly during the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Sunday, and revealed to the magazine that she plans to depart The Vampire Diaries after Season 8. The show is currently nearing the close of Season 7, so Graham, and Bonnie, will be around for at least one more television season.

Kat Graham got her start in The Parent Trap in 1998 and went on to appear in several movies and TV shows. Her resume includes Lizzie McGuire, Malcolm in the Middle, The O.C., CSI and Hannah Montana. She started on The Vampire Diaries in 2009, during Season 1. Graham is currently filming the Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me, where she will be playing Tupac’s lifelong friend Jada Pinkett.

On The Vampire Diaries, Bonnie is a very powerful witch who also frequently serves as counselor and confidant to her group of friends. She’s also known as someone who has no problem offering to sacrifice herself for her friends and family, and as such her heroism has very few bounds. People in the town of Mystic Falls see her as kindhearted, helpful and extremely selfless.

Bonnie Bennett has had one hell of a ride on The Vampire Diaries. She started off as a teenager who thought she simply had some psychic abilities, but soon discovered that she was descended from a long line of witches and also has that power. Bonnie trained her ass off and became skilled enough to stop an evil warlock who wanted her friend, Elena, dead, by gaining the power of 100 dead witches.

The character has been able to bring people back from the dead, kill some of the original vampires, draw magic from the spirits of a massacre and transfer souls back into their original bodies. After dying herself and later being resurrected, Bonnie is now the gatekeeper to the afterlife and feels the pain that each supernatural being felt at the time of their death.

There’s no doubt to fans of The Vampire Diaries that Kat Graham’s performance as Bonnie has helped fuel the popularity of the series. Bonnie’s key traits wouldn’t stand out without Graham being there to imbue the character with such a kind and self-sacrificing nature. Will you miss seeing Bonnie Bennett on The Vampire Diaries?
