Two of the most consistently hilarious comediennes of our time are undoubtedly Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They can bring the laughs on their own, but they seem positively unstoppable whenever they team up. They’ve joined forces on everything from feature films to SNL, so it’s only natural to hope that they might collaborate on a TV show. According to Tina Fey, however, a show isn’t likely to happen. Here's what she had to say:
We’re regarded as a comedy team, which is certainly fine by me. But I think we both know this to be true – it’s because we’re actually both alphas. So it works in short spurts, but I don’t know if we could make it a real dynasty.
Tina Fey’s explanation for why she and Amy Poehler probably won’t be making regular television together came from a panel at the Tribeca Film Festival, and it unfortunately makes a lot of sense. Whenever they’ve worked together in the past, they’ve mostly done it on one-off projects. They’ve co-hosted the Golden Globes, co-hosted Saturday Night Live, and they’ve co-starred in movies, but on scripted TV they’ve each held the reins of their own separate TV series to great success over the years. Fey’s 30 Rock and Poehler’s Parks and Recreation were plenty funny on their own. Poehler’s guest appearance on a special live episode of 30 Rock was certainly fun, but the show wasn’t lacking for her absence overall.
On the plus side for those of us who love Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, because they work primarily on separate projects should mean that we get double the fun on the comedy circuit. The second season of Tina Fey’s Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was recently released, and it has already been renewed for a third. Amy Poehler charmed audiences everywhere with her voice work in Inside Out, and she’s starring in the big screen comedy The House with Will Ferrell and Allison Tolman for 2017. Honestly, even if the ladies aren't self-described alphas, they might be too busy to work on a new ongoing project as a pair.
Hopefully, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will have the time, drive, and patience to continue to occasionally team up for one-off projects in the future. They’re a dynamite duo on live television, and their latest film Sisters did reasonably well despite a simultaneous release with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Who knows? Maybe an appearance on Kimmy Schmidt could be in the future for Poehler.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler may not be working together on their own series any time in the near future, but there’s plenty of solid TV to watch in place of a crazy collaboration between them.
