Where Legends Of Tomorrow Season 2 Is Going To Pick Up

Legends of Tomorrow

Warning: mild spoilers for Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 are ahead!

When Legends of Tomorrow Season 1 concluded in May, the show's status quo has definitely shifted in an interesting new direction. Captain Cold was dead, Hawkgirl and Hawkman opted to start a new life together, the Time Masters were eliminated and the remaining team members met Rex Tyler, a member of the Justice Society of America. Well, if you've been paying any attention to the news and trailers for Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 in the hiatus months, Season 2 sounds like it's going to an even wilder ride than before, and much of that will have to do with the main characters taking up their new roles as the protectors of time.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim sat down with EW to set the stage of where Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 picks up, and months after they've been visiting different periods to keep the timeline safe, the team will have to deal with a shakeup in leadership. He explained:

We pick up six months later, and the Legends are acting like time cops. They're going around history, fixing aberrations, dealing with time pirates, all sorts of fun things. One of the things we found last year that we want to do more of is go to fun time periods like 1958, like the Old West, and have our team both get into trouble, because that's what they do, but also fix some things in history, and that's what they've been doing for six months. Something happens in the premiere that changes the game for them, and we're going to end up with a shift in leadership away from Rip into the hands of someone new. It'll be very organic, you will understand why it's happening, but I don't want to spoil it too much.

There's a lot to digest from Marc Guggenheim's massive info drop in the article, but it's safe to say that there will be plenty of crazy antics this season. The Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 premiere will kick off when historian and future Citizen Steel Nathan Heywood (played by Nick Zano) realizes that the Legends are in trouble, and he'll seek help from Star City mayor Oliver Queen, a.k.a. Green Arrow. Once the team is back together, they'll resume their temporal mission, starting with 1942 and preventing Albert Einstein from being forced to build an atomic bomb for the Nazis. As Guggenheim noted, something will also happen that ends up ousting Rip Hunter as leader, which should make for a refreshing change of pace following his dubious decisions last season.

While in the 1940s, the Legends will eventually meet the Justice Society, including Amaya Jiwe (played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers), a.k.a. Vixen, who will end up permanently joining the team. All this is just the tip of the iceberg from what's to come in Season 2. In the midst of traveling to these different points in time (including the Old West, where they'll reunite with Jonah Hex), eventually the team will come into conflict with the Legion of Doom, which, in this continuity, consists of Reverse-Flash, Malcolm Merlyn, Damien Darhk and a somehow-revived Captain Cold. To quote Doc Brown from Back to the Future, "You're gonna see some serious shit."

Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 premieres tonight at 8 p.m. EST/PST on The CW.
