Why Saying Goodbye To Vampire Diaries Is Different Now, According To Nina Dobrev

Nina Dobrev on The Vampire Diaries

After 8 seasons, The Vampire Diaries concluded its series last night. It's an emotional time for cast, crew, and fans alike who say their farewells for a show that has been running since 2009. For Nina Dobrev, who has left the show before, the farewell was something more than a goodbye to a series she was a part of. The actress shares her thoughts in the statement below:

This goodbye feels different than it did when I left the first time because I was leaving and the show continued, and now the show's ending for everyone. It feels more final. It's more almost like closure. Everyone's been very nostalgic; it's a bittersweet ending. I'm very happy that we were able to make it work and that I came back because I really missed the whole family and wanted to be part of the final goodbye. It really has felt like the closure that I needed --- that hopefully everybody needs --- and I think it ends in such a beautiful way that everyone will be happy.

Nina Dobrev's left the series after Season 6 alongside co-star Michael Trevino. In the series, her character Elena would lay in a coffin asleep and unable to awaken until Bonnie, played by Kat Graham, would die. Dobrev's Elena would provide a voice over for the following Season 7, and, spoiler alert if you haven't seen the finale yet, would appear yet again as Elena in the finale. In fact, the episode revolves around her character quite heavily, so those of you who may have dropped out when she did might find it worthwhile to jump back into The Vampire Diaries. If you'd rather just get the recap, we got you covered. If you did see the finale, hopefully Dobrev's words to EW gave you even more closure than that tear jerker of a finale.

Nina Dobrev's initial departure from the series came as a bit of a shock to fans. She would be the first of the cast to leave the series, and while the actress shared a note at the time of the announcement citing six seasons was always her plan, rumors swirled. The actress was in a high profile relationship with costar Ian Somerholder, and while some would say her exit involved the stress of working with an ex, many chopped it up to Dobrev's schedule of playing multiple characters, and simply being overworked. If there was a different reason as to why Dobrev got out, no one on the cast is saying, which just goes to show what a family they've become in their time together.

As for life following The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev has a couple projects on the way. The actress will be appearing alongside Ellen Page and others in the reboot for the film Flatliners, as well as two other films set for release in the near future. It will be exciting to see where she lands next following the conclusion of The Vampire Diaries. We will be sure to keep you in the loop on what Nina's up to, but in the meantime, you have to find a new show to watch! Head on over to our midseason premiere guide and see what's new!
