One Supergirl Character Will Be Around A Lot More In Season 3

supergirl season 2 the cw katie mcgrath lena luthor

Supergirl brought in a number of new actors to fill out the cast after the big move from CBS to The CW, and one of them comes from a legendary DC Comics family. Lena Luthor made her Supergirl debut early in Season 2, and she's proved to be a valuable - if sometimes ambiguous - friend to Kara so far. Now, The CW has good news for fans of Lena Luthor. Katie McGrath has been promoted to series regular status for Supergirl Season 3, and we'll get to see a lot more of her.

Katie McGrath has appeared in seven episodes of Supergirl so far. Her character was introduced as the adopted younger sister of the supervillain Lex Luthor. Lena moved to National City to rebrand Luthor Corp into L-Corp and hopefully distance the family company from Lex's evil legacy. Her mom hasn't been any help, as Kara discovered that Lillian Luthor was actually the leader of the sinister group known as Cadmus.

Despite the crimes of her mother and brother, Lena has pretty consistently been on the side of the good guys. Deadline's confirmation that Katie McGrath has been promoted to series regular for Season 3 means that we don't have to fret about Lena possibly being killed off in the rest of Season 2. Still, that's not to say that Lena will never be turned against Kara and Co. Her surviving family members are vehemently anti-alien, and she discovered earlier in Season 2 that Lex has caches of weapons designed to take down aliens hidden all over the world. We even saw her holding her own in a game of chess against her brother in a flashback to their youths.

Basically, the pieces are all in place for Lena to possibly take a dark turn and create a lot of trouble for Kara in Season 3. She might also remain on the good side and continue standing up for aliens against her family. There's no way to tell at this point. Katie McGrath's promotion to regular status does promise that the show isn't done with her. While the Luthor/Cadmus plot was a major part off the first half of Season 2, the rest of the second half seems poised to focus on Mon-El and his Daxamite parents. Even if Lena doesn't get a ton of attention in the rest of Season 2, she'll be back for more in Season 3.

Personally, I'm not shocked that Lena will be a regular next season. Supergirl almost certainly wouldn't want to get rid of a Luthor after only one year, and there's still plenty about Lena we don't yet know. The relatively early confirmation that she'll be a regular is more than welcome, however; at least we don't have to worry if Lena will meet her end any time soon. We may need to be patient and wait until the Daxamite stories are finished before she's back in the spotlight, but I think we can handle that.

Tune in to Supergirl on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET to see what's next for Lena, Kara, and all the others in National City, and don't forget to stop by our midseason TV premiere guide and our summer TV premiere schedule.
