CSI follows a group of exceedingly well-dressed and well-coiffed crime scene investigators in Las Vegas. For seven seasons, they’ve been making police detectives superfluous while tracking down criminals using only a stray hair, fingerprint or drop of blood. They’ve been shot at, buried alive, and at the end of last season, kidnapped. At the beginning of season 8, we join the CSI crew as they search for Sara Sidle who was kidnapped by a serial killer and is currently trapped under a car in the desert.

I’ve been a sporadic CSI fan since about season three. There’s a huge suspension of disbelief that is necessary when watching this show, but if you can get past the fact that crime scene investigators don’t do about 75% of the things that these guys do, it’s an entertaining procedural. My main problem with CSI, beyond Marg Helgenberger’s freakishly-altered lips, is the fact that the majority of crime victims arrive at their unfortunate position because of sexual “deviance.” Whether it’s something as out there as someone being shot at a Furry convention, or a woman who is strangled after a one night stand, it seems as though any sexual liaison that is outside of a husband and wife relationship is punished in some way.

It’s been a few seasons since I’ve actually watched this show as it was aired, and I really don’t see any reason to start again. As much as I love procedurals because they’re easy to catch up with, the downside is that the stand-alone aspect of the episodes doesn’t really make it feel like appointment television. I’ll probably just catch the reruns on Spike, or at least I would, if they played more than the random twelve episodes from season 4 that they seem to have on a constant loop.
