Desperate Housewives is a drama/dark-comedy that centers mainly on the women of Wisteria Lane, a cozy, upper middle-class cul-de-sac in the town of Fairview. The women share the common bond of friendship, as well as a fair amount of drama in their personal lives, usually focusing on their romantic relationships. Susan (Hatcher) is a klutzy single-mom who has had an on-again-off-again romantic relationship with Mike, the sexy plumber. As of the end of season three, Susan and Mike got married in a very small, private ceremony with her teenage daughter Julie there to witness.
Bree (Cross) is the prim and proper one in the group. She values appearances above everything else. As of the end of Season three, Bree was faking a pregnancy to cover up the fact that her daughter Danielle got knocked up by Edie’s nephew, Austin. Gabrielle (Longoria) is a former model who settled down on Wisteria Lane when she married Carlos, a wealthy business man. After some affairs, a failed attempt to have a baby and some other drama, Carlos and Gaby divorced and as of last season, Gaby had just gotten married to Victor, the mayor of Fairview. Immediately after the ceremony, she overheard Victor saying he married her to secure the Latino vote in the race for governor. She was so upset by this that she slept with Carlos (or just made out with him. That part wasn’t entirely clear.)
Lynette (Huffman) is probably the most desperate of all of the housewives. She’s the wife to a man who never seems to be happy and the mother of a bunch of unruly children. While tending to her family’s needs, Lynette is also running her husband’s pizza restaurant. Towards the end of season three she came dangerously close to having an affair with the dreamy chef at the restaurant. She cut things off before they went too far and shortly afterwards, found out she has cancer.
Finally, there’s Edie (Sheridan), the woman who has never been fully part of the group, largely due to her semi-trashiness. Edie is single and always seemed satisfied with just sleeping around. Then she and Carlos started seeing each other but he never really fell out of love with Gaby and when he found out Edie was lying to him about trying to get pregnant (he wanted a child, she just wanted him to stay with her) he left her. At the end of the season, Edie hung herself. Spoiler Alert:Word around the internet is that Edie’s suicide attempt didn’t take so Sheridan will be back in the fourth season.
Had I not rewatched the third season of Desperate Housewives on DVD fairly recently, I’m not sure I’d be all that excited for the new season. It feels like forever ago since the finale but my recent viewing of the season totally reinvigorated my spirits for what’s to come on Wisteria Lane.
I am really hoping that Gaby’s issues with Victor play out well when the new season resumes. Finding out that he was using her to further his career in politics was just awful; though we should’ve seen something coming by the way he treated her after he won the election. Our Gaby won’t stand for this much longer. Her immediate return to Carlos’ arms was a definite step in the right direction but she’s now married to another man so it should be interesting to see how this resolves itself.
The other housewives all have their own secrets. Bree is faking a pregnancy, Susan got married and Lynette has cancer. None of these women saw fit to inform each other about these little developments so I have a feeling the beginning of the new season is going to be full of surprises.
I’m also looking forward to seeing the new couple on the block played by Dana Delaney and Nathan Fillion. As a fan of all things Whedon-related, I’ve always appreciated Fillon’s work (Buffy, Firefly). As for Delaney, I have a feeling she’s going to have the polite-bitchiness down perfectly in this series and I’m interested to see how well her character meshes or clashes with the other housewives.
