NCIS is a spin-off of the now cancelled series, JAG and centers on a team of investigators who handle crimes related to the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The acronym stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
Like all of the other procedural dramas, the NCIS team is made up of people with very different personalities and backgrounds. In this case though, the common thread is of course is that they’re all working for the military. Special Agent Leroy Gibbs (Harmon) leads the group. He’s a former gunnery sergeant who is now a top-notch investigator. S.A. Anthony DiNozzo (Weatherly) is an ex-homicide detective who has excellent instincts in the field. Abby Sciuto (Perrette) is the forensic expert and has a dark, witty side.
Everyone on the team has a lot of experience in their field; so naturally, they’re able to take on some fairly high profile investigations, like military-related murders, kidnappings and terrorist threats.
NCIS is one of those shows that I always see getting decent ratings despite the fact that I don’t know a single person who watches it. I expect the series appeals mostly to people with military backgrounds or if not, people who have an interest in military shows.
I’m all for supporting the troops but my enjoyment of anything even remotely military related is limited to movies like Platoon and Saving Private Ryan and Nelson DeMille books. I have no interested in crime related procedural dramas and even less interest in a series that shows the genre in a military light. That said, the show has gotten good ratings over the last few years so there must be something to it. And to those of you who do watch the show, I invite you to comment below and let people know why they should watch it.

I hate these kind of shows. every one has fallen into this CSI mind control banter. Having said that I never thought NCIS would have anything to offer me (being a Horror movie Fan) I thought everyone was nuts with this crime solving Pop sensation sure to burn out like Ricky Martin and the rest of that over praised disposable garbage. BUT, I Love this show!! I Initially caught a glimpse of Abbey (She's hot I don't care who knows it) When I flipped on NCIS and began to watch I wanted more & more. Now, Finally with the back to back to back episodes I'm almost completely content. Thank you for changing the way I feel about TV shows. Can't wait for tomorrows line up thank god for On-Demand.
This is one of the best shows on television. The above criticism in the Preview Pulp could be fairly applied to JAG which NCIS is a spin-off of but the offspring is far superior to the parent in this case. You really are missing out on some great fun if don't give it a try.
It is about a government department that investigates crimes commited or thought to be commited by military, but there is more to the show then that. I didn't start watching it until the fourth season, and I got hooked with the first episoide I saw. It's not just another one of those show's where they show you a crime and follow someone around why they solve it, they show you the personal lives of the invesigatores. Not only that, they give it a very realistic feel. They have actuall NCIS (retired) who are there to make sure they actually know what there talking about. I love NCIS!!!!!!
The characters are well developed and there is a lot of humor in the episodes, no matter how serious the case. It's not a military show at all but for the fact that the crimes they investigate are of victims who are in the navy, or retired navy. It's a fascinating, well plotted, series. I am totally addicted!
Although NCIS does investigate crimes committed by and against military personnel, the series cannot be construed as a military show by any means. It is a crime solving series, without a doubt, but as Stevie states, it is more a character driven series than a crime and/or procedural driven series. The crime du jour is more an excuse to watch this dysfunctional family operate, because that is what they are. There's Dr. "Ducky" Mallard, the kindly and slightly quirky grandfather; Gibbs, the stern father who makes his "kids" toe the line; Tony DiNozzo, the annoying older brother who loves to tease everyone, but would defend them to the death; McGee, the smarter younger brother with a touch of shyness and a bestselling book based on his coworkers (who has grown enormously over the last four years); and Ziva, the outsider who has found a home and fits in much better than Kate, who was killed at the end of the second season. We love them all, with their quirks and their foibles, and we enjoy the way they work together, despite all their problems, to gain justice for those who can't find it on their own. And, yeah, there's also the wonderful and realistic humor. *Gibbs slap* for not even trying the series!
The thing that seperates NCIS from the rest of the CSIs is its humor. Even in the most serious of episodes, humor serves to lighten the mood and make for a very enjoyable hour of viewing. The cast all work wonderfully well together, and give one the impression they are friends as well as co-workers. Even though the title is 'Naval Criminal Intelligence Service', the investigators are civilian or retired military. Yes, it does deal with Naval and Marine personnel, but the stories are as human as they are military. I would urge anyone and everyone to give this show a try!
