Premieres: Monday, September 24th at 9:30 p.m. EST Network: (CBS) Creator(s): Tom Hertz Starring: Patrick Warburton, David Spade Website: CBS.com
Brought on to CBS as a mid-season replacement last January, paired with their megahit Two and a Half Men, The Rules of Engagement is scheduled to come back for its first full season this September. The show revolves around five main characters: a long-married couple (Megyn Price as Audrey and Patrick Warburton as Jeff), a newly-engaged pair (Oliver Hudson as Adam and Bianca Kajlich as Jennifer), and their resolutely-single friend Russell (David Spade). Jeff and Audrey deal with the classic troubles of a long-term couple--temptations of infidelity, standing up against younger women, keeping the spark alive-- while Adam and Jennifer navigate new obstacles like how to spend their shared money. Russell, in the meantime, continues reveling in the life of a single guy on the prowl.
There’s not much information available as the second season begins, though the full details of one upcoming episode are available. SPOILDER WARNING Heather Locklear will make a guest appearance as Audrey’s sister, whose seemingly-perfect marriage is falling apart. Not only that, but she has agreed to go on a date with womanizing Russell. The cameo will carry an extra punch given that Locklear and Spade are rumored to have a real-life romance.
To be honest, I’ve got little use for CBS’s current lineup of generic, multiple-camera sitcoms-- the glorious How I Met Your Mother excepted. David Spade wore out his welcome for me back on Just Shoot Me, and jokes about the trials of marriage just seem tired-- maybe this is because I’m not married? Either way, I’m not really expecting Rules of Engagement to suddenly wow me in its second season, Heather Locklear aside. Though if Two and a Half Men managed an Emmy nomination, maybe lightning will manage to strike twice? Something tells me it’s doubtful.
