NBC is reporting that an average of 31.1 million people tuned in to watch Michael Phelps win his eighth gold medal, breaking Spitzs record for most gold medals won in a single Olympic. The high ratings made the broadcast the most viewed Saturday night program in 18 years. The audience peaked at around 40 million by 11:00 p.m., which was when Phelps and his three teammates raced for the gold. With all the Phelps hype, its a wonder if anything is going to top that as the 2008 Beijing Olympics marches on.
