The holiday season is in full on swing mode, and that means it’s time to start thinking of gifts. What with Kwanzaa and that Jesus day being nigh you should have some ideas. Rather than go small time with supreme levels of awesome, such as The Bro Code, I’m going big. Real big. As in full on firehouse and complete series big. There are lots of ways to turn on your TV and avoid seeing your favorite shows – ahem, Heroes – floundering. One such suggestion is to get the DVD set of a classic. Now you just gotta know who to call.
The Gift: The Real Ghostbusters Complete Collection
Listen, you should already love the Ghostbusters. Harold Ramis and company created a classic back in 1984 that was equaled by the animated television series. This was no one-off poorly crafted cash in. The Emmy winning show featured the characters from the movie, but looking slightly different. I guess that can help explain why some people are confused as to whether the cartoon and the movie are related. A flashback episode that took place directly after the first movie ended was used to explain a lot of the changes to the uniforms and look of the world.
Let’s not forget that cartoons in the 80’s were quite silly, and it wouldn’t be until the 90’s started giving us quality work like Animaniacs, Batman: The Animated Series, and Gargoyles that people would see Saturday morning cartoons as anything but mindless kid fluff. But the Ghostbusters were doing it long before then. The show featured tie-ins with the movies, along with a darker and more mature tone than typically seen at the time. I still envision the Bogeyman from the show as the Bogeyman.
Who to get it for:
Anyone who appreciates great cartoons or the Ghostbusters.
Cost:
The set will run you $179, and is available only through Time Life. But the set is gorgeous, with many returning people coming in to do commentaries. It’s well worth the money.
Additional Gifts:
If you can find them…Ghostbusters action figures. I had a Dr. Venkman as a kid that came with a proton pack with a swirly plastic doodad. It was incredible.
