Can You Duet is a new reality series coming to CMT by the producers of American Idol. In this series, the singers who make it through the audition process will be teamed up with a partner and set to compete week after week against other duos. Unlike Idol, in which contestants only have to worry about finding the right song, contestants in Can You Duet will have an added layer of drama because they’ll have to learn to work with their partner in finding the right song and performing it together well enough to make it to the next round. The judges (Naomi Judd, Brett Manning and Aimee Mayo) will mentor the contestants as well as decide which of them will move forward each week.
Can You Duet will premiere after the 2008 CMT Music Awards and then air in its regular timeslot on Friday nights at 8:00 p.m.
Normally I probably wouldn’t be interested in another singing competition right now but the duet aspect of this series sounds really interesting to me. I like the idea of seeing contestants set up to work with other contestants. It kind of reminds me of the early Hollywood rounds of American Idol when the contestants are forced to work in small groups. There’s always drama as some of the contestants feel like they’re doing all of the work while others aren’t willing to put in much of an effort. From what I understand, Duet will show footage of the contestants working together on their song before their performance. That aspect of the series could make this show very interesting.
