There’s a meteor headed straight for earth. Run for it Marty!!! Sorry, couldn’t help but throw in that little Back to the Future reference as NBC’s upcoming miniseries Meteor stars non other than Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown in BTTF). Check out these video clips and NBC’s full description for this new summer miniseries.

From the sounds of it, Meteor is yet another movie about a big rock headed straight for the planet, complete with crazy shots of cities being bombarded by chunks of the earth-ending meteor. Though I think this one might go without the team of oil drillers sent off to land on the meteor (Armageddon) or the underground government created bunker set up to preserve a sampling of human life (Deep Impact). Instead, we have two scientists desperately trying to get their findings to the government so that the meteor can be stopped. And based on the photos we have in the galleries below, there’s quite a bit of action involved (and plenty of guns) as well as more than a few instances in which people look up.

Below is NBC’s description:

“In the new suspenseful four-hour miniseries Meteor, two scientists, Dr. Lehman (Emmy Award winner Christopher Lloyd, Back to the Future) and Imogene O’Neil (Marla Sokoloff, The Practice) discover that the giant meteor Kassandra, approximately three times the size of Mt. Everest, has been knocked out of its orbit and is now barreling straight for Earth, as showers of smaller meteorites begin to lay waste to major cities around the globe.

Desperate to alert authorities, Dr. Lehman and Imogene contact military scientist Dr. Chetwyn (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Jason Alexander, Seinfeld) who discounts their warnings of impending doom. Undeterred, the two determined scientists decide to drive from Mexico to the nearest United States armed forces base to plead their case. The military, who has also detected the meteor, calls in Dr. Chetwyn to help devise a solution to destroy it.

Realizing that Dr. Lehman and Imogene were right, Dr. Chetwyn desperately tries to contact them for more information. Struggling to make it across the border, they run into trouble and Imogene is forced to make the trek alone. With time quickly running out, Imogene continues her tortuous journey to get in touch with the military and relay the coordinates and a plan to destroy Kassandra.”

Meteor airs Sunday, July 12 and Sunday, July 19 on NBC (9-11 p.m. ET) on NBC.
